You cannot achieve anything in this industry without hard work - AkshayKumar | Exclusive Interview

Akshay Kumar is unstoppable, even after ruling the industry like a boss for more than two decades,. Unlike most actors, Akshay loves working on multiple films and the audience can't have enough of him either. While he started 2015 with a fabulous film like Baby, both Gabbar Is Back and Brothers earned him accolades for his performance. For someone who is not bothered by the box office collections of his films, Akshay's only aim is to entertain his audience with characters that are different from the ones that he has done in the past. In the same quest, Akshay has left Happy Singh from Singh Is King behind and has stepped into the shoes of Raftaar Singh in the upcoming Singh Is Bliing (and no, the two films are not related).

The first time I met Akshay sir was when I was all of 8, on the sets of a dance reality show, where he was present as the judge during Hera Pheri promotions (and when I narrated the story to him after our chat, he refused to believe that our picture together was almost 15 years old. He kept saying, "Both of us still look the same"). Even then, I was quite inspired by his dedication and focus. The actor had made sure that all the props and necessary arrangements were made in time for his performance, and continued shooting till 4 am, till he got all his shots right. 2015 again gave me the chance to meet the Khiladi Kumar twice, but this time, as the creative director of Diary of a Dancebee. First, during Baby promotions, and now, in a between super long day for Singh Is Bliing promotions at a suburban luxury hotel. Dressed in simple casuals, Akshay walks in and settles down quickly, after a short chat (in Marathi) with his security team. "We started these interviews at 6 am and now, it is almost 5 pm. I start my day early, around 4 - 5 am, and sleep on time, around 9 - 10 pm. I always make sure that work does not interfere with my lifestyle," he said. Well, that just confirms, years come and go, but some things never change, and in the case of Akshay Kumar, it is his discipline. Apart from his films, the actor was recently in the news for his donation of 90 lacs for the farmer suicide cause in Maharashtra. But instead of talking about it, the actor chose to keep it low and stated, "I don't like talking about charity. It's a personal thing and everyone must help those in need."In a candid chat with Diary of a Dancebee, the actor talks about Singh Is Bliing, journey as an actor, the mathematics of cinema, memories of ganesh chaturthi, and his encounter with Mufasa - the lion!

You have always stated that comedy is your favourite genre and you are getting back to it with Singh Is Bliing. How excited are you?
To be honest, I am very excited, because since the last two - two and a half years, I have been doing a lot of serious stuff. These films aimed at spreading a message. But getting back to doing commercial cinema has been a great experience. Around the same time, I also got the opportunity to do Housefull 3, which we have started filming in London. Houseful 3 is all about going as wild as one can go. Post that, I will get back to some serious films again, so in a way, it is good to get a breather and feel relaxed in between serious projects. Doing different things always excites me.

But, do you think it can get stressful at times, especially while shifting from one character to another?
Not at all. Firstly, I am not the kind of an actor who will get all serious and behaves like the character 24x7. Its all fake! Let's be practical. As actors, we get fancy vanity vans with air conditioners, the best of food and comfort, bowl full of dry fruits, the best of female actors to work with (laughs), so it is not that taxing. Actually, whenever journalists hear an actor say something like this, you should just say to yourself - "Jhooth bol raha hain yeh"(laughs).

How does it feel to be among the first few actors who started the trend of mainstream heroes doing comic roles?
Actually, it was Bachchan sahab who started the trend and was the first one to do films like Desh Premee. He was the first actor who played the hero and his character had a comic touch. A lot like what Mehmood sahab and Kishore sahab used to do. Very few people did it, and I just followed them. It's great to do comedy, and it is absolutely difficult. But unfortunately, a comic hero is not getting his due in the industry, because we look down on them. Unless you are doing romance or tragedy. Its like, unless you don't cry or scream, you can't get the best actor award. If you are making people laugh, they look at it as buffoonery. I fail to understand this behaviour. Its absolutely ridiculous!

But unfortunately, a comic hero is not getting his due in the industry, because we look down on them. Unless you are doing romance or tragedy. Its like, unless you don't cry or scream, you can't get the best actor award.

While Baby and Gabbar Is Back performed well at the box office, Brothers, unfortunately, wasn't received that well. Did it leave you feeling disappointed?
I don't really see it as a failure. The film did average business, but I am very proud to do a film like this. Brothers was an emotional film, with one of the most amazing fight sequences ever witnessed on screen. Since the film was about mixed martial arts, it is and will always be very close to my heart. Through Brothers, I got a chance to introduce something new to the audience and I am definitely proud about it. There is no room for disappointment.

You are one of the few actors who do 3-4 films a year, with an average of one film per quarter. But, do you think it will help if there is a sufficient gap between your film releases?
While I know that my films are lined up once in every 3-4 months, I make sure that my character is different and I am offering something new to my audience. Plus, I ensure that it is made in a certain amount, because I am the producer in most cases. If you look at the mathematics, my films are made at a COP (cost of production) of 30 crores on an average. If you make a film for 5 rupees and earn 8, we are still earning a profit of 3 rupees. So, whatever the result, I am the one who will face it, whether profit or loss. I am happy, irrespective of my film's fate. You know, I recently met a light man, who joined his palms and said, "Sahab, main aapko thank you bolna chahta hoon. Aap inti saari filmien karte ho, toh hamare pass kaam rehta hain." Then, my make-up man told me that he earns the most in this industry. So, I don't see anything wrong in doing multiple films a year.

Are you planning to do any more films based on mixed martial arts (MMA)?
Not yet. But, if there is any suitable script, I would love to do it. Right now, I am focusing on my MMA tournament in Surat. I am looking forward to it and I am thankful, because the Chief Minister of Gujarat will be present. The idea is to take this tournament to every nook and corner of India. I want people to know that learning martial arts or any form of self defence is extremely important.

You are the only actor who loves experimenting with stunts and tries new action sequences in every film. So, is there anything unique that we will get to see you do in Singh is Bliing?
Absolutely! In this film, I shot an important sequence with a lion. His name was Mufasa. That is a big stunt in itself (laughs). Not that I am fighting with him, but this super hug lion is sitting in my car, right behind me. They got him and there was an incident which freaked me out. While shooting, he saw his own reflection in the windscreen and thought that there was another lion in front of him. He got angry and broke the windscreen. I just ran away. People were like, "Aap toh Khiladi ho. Woh kuch nahi karega," and I just said, "Bhai, hum Khiladi the. Main jaunga hi nahi. Woh maar dega or finally, film ke end mein mera photo aayega - Late Akshay Kumar - aisa like ke" (laughs). But it was an incredible experience. Such a good looking, loveable, full grown lion, that you will end up falling in love with him. But working with him was a risk, because if you hang around when he is not in the mood, aap toh gaye bhai.

Whatever the result of my films, I am the one who will face it, whether profit or loss. I am happy, irrespective of my film's fate.

Both you and Twinkle have a humorous side, which is poles apart.
Honestly, her humour in books and columns, even at the book launch, was not a surprise for me, because I get to see that everyday (laughs). If you compare our sense of humour, then she definitely has an edge. My humour is different. It is very Punjabi. Twinkle is very sharp and blunt. Even when it comes to the kind of humour used in my films, she has her own choices. She may like slapstick comedy sometimes, but it depends on how everything is presented.

With star kids and actors with godfathers making it big in the industry today, how do you see your journey of becoming a star without any support?
It would be wrong on my part to say that nobody makes it big on their own merit. Just because somebody is an actor's son, doesn't mean that he can become a star without working hard. You cannot survive in this industry without hard work. You can't achieve anything without it. There are many actors who are star kids and perhaps, they haven't worked hard. So, they couldn't make a mark at all.

Do you think there is a different between the content and kind of films that were made a decade back, when compared to the projects now?
Absolutely, and that is because the audience has changed. So, as long as the audience will keep changing, even the content will go through changes.  The writers think according to what the people want nowadays. So, the supply will be according to what both the multiplex and single screen audience demands. I personally think that the changes will be drastic in the coming years. According to me, 2016 will be a golden period for the industry, due to some reasons which I feel will work for the industry. You can expect a lot of changes from October - November.

The country is celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi with a lot of enthusiasm. What is your childhood memory of celebrating the festival like?
When I was staying in Bandra east, I used to have great fun and even dance on the roads. Then even when we shifted to Lokhandwala, there was a Ganpati in our building. I remember dancing like crazy and taking the idol to Versova for immersion. We used to be awake all night, play games, organise competitions, do the aarti, go to different houses for prasad, enjoy the food. It was great fun and I have amazing memories. It's a lovely festival, which is extremely auspicious. But at the same time, it is important for us to understand that saving the environment is crucial. The eco-friendly idols are expensive, but at least they are not harming the nature and they quickly dissolve in the water. I stay near the beach and the worst sight after immersion day is to wake up to remains of the idols, hands and legs in different parts of the beach. It is very sad!

There are many actors who are star kids and perhaps, they haven't worked hard. So, they couldn't make a mark at all.

How does it feel when younger actors like Tiger Shroff look up to for inspiration?
I feel good about it. Even Tiger is one of the few actors who loves martial arts and parkour. He indulges into a lot of physical fitness activities. He is one of the few people I know who does not indulge in extra products, which a lot of youngsters do use as a shortcut for a better physique. Hats off to him!

You have completed 25 years in the industry. How do you look back at your journey in the industry so far?
It has been a good one, nothing less than a roller coaster ride. The kid in me loves such roller coaster rides. There is a lot more left and I shall keep up with it in all my upcoming films.

What's 2016 going to be like for your fans?
There is Airlift in January. I have also started working on Housefull 3, and then there is Rustam with Neeraj Pandey. Currently, all my energies are focused on these project. If there is anything new that comes my way, I will end up announcing it anyway.

"Those who follow the crowd usually get lost. I don't know all the keys to success, but one key to failure is trying to please everyone."
There are people who are busy pleasing others, some who follow the rules dictated by their leaders, and then, there are those like me, who love standing out of the crowd. In today's day and age, where fairy-tale like Instagram posts and images of 'The perfect life' rule the roost, and where it is easy for others to influence your opinion (Yeah! Thanks, social media), being a real girl and standing out is no easy task. Despite coming from a simple, middle class family, I have a strong opinion, I create my own rules, and I don't follow what the world says without going through the process of questioning. While I am thankful to my parents, who despite all the hurdles in life, brought me up like this and educated me well. But, things go a lot beyond just the classroom education. It pains me to see several hundred girls still living the life of a clone. They are aiming to be someone else, a personality that does not belong to them. And then, there are others who are trying to show off a personality which is not them at all. Both the kinds belong to the same league, and maybe that's why, I will always prefer being in a league of my own.

The post is serious and questions a lot of issues that our society is currently facing (No! I am not discussing bans), but the outfit is fun! This is one of my favourite go-to outfits for a day out. There is nothing that a comfortable pair of sneakers, well fitted dress and the perfect bag pack can't do.

Of course, taking good care of your skin and exercising regularly is normal, but obsessing over a so-called flaw and trying to be like someone is not. I have often come across comments and conversations, when women discuss how they would do anything to get luscious locks like a particular actress or model. Maybe, that explains the huge demand for fairness products and cosmetic surgeries in the Indian market. This everlasting need to be like someone, to look perfect and to get that right photograph for Instagram (to get several likes and if you don't, you end up buying them) is driving several women into depression and other forms of illnesses. It may hit you, and you will never know. Instead, have you tried asking yourself, "Why do I need to look like someone, when I am perfect, just the way I am!"

Admit it, nobody in this world is perfect and no, I haven't come across any definition of what makes an individual perfect. A pimple on the forehead does not make you look any less beautiful than what you looked like before the zit popped. Having freckles does not make less you pretty, and no, being short or plump does not restrict you from doing anything cool in life. You can still be awesome and rule the world with all these so called 'problems', which according to most of you, are life threatening.  Perhaps, you fear that these so called flaws will affect your future, or maybe, you fear the society!

"Is saal patli lag rahi ho""What is that mark on your forehead? Last year toh nahi tha" - lines that will make thousands of you cringe. But is impressing the society really your ultimate goal? Is life all about impressing others, and eventually, losing your own personality? No! God has not blessed you with a human life, so that you can just hear random taunts and keep mum. Speak up and learn to answer their questions in a straightforward manner. Keeping quiet will only give rise to more body shaming and notorious comments about a girl's complexion, hair and fashion choices. Someone has to put an end to this circle, so why not you? But before you take the plunge, learn to love yourself first. Because if you can't love yourself, no one will take you seriously.

I have gone through the whole drill of teenage skin horrors, unnecessary comments passed by extended relatives and societal judgements. But till date, I have never allowed their opinion and my so called 'flaws' to affect me. I simply ignore such conversations with a smile (and then, end up giving a sarcastic response, which makes sure they never mess with me). I have always believed that in the end, it is your work and character that speaks volumes about you, and not your complexion, height or weight. A legendary human being is always remembered for his / her contribution to a specific field of study or the society, not the pimple or freckle on his / her cheek. And please, no fairness cream is going to ensure that you get a job. That's like following a herd mentality. Be happy with what you have and invest in your education instead.

Wear your favourite clothes with pride, flaunt those curves, stop hiding that pimple and take pride in all that you have. Stop aping people and presenting the girl that you are not. Be yourself, because there is no one like you! You don't need followers and likes to tell you how beautiful you are. Stand out of the crowd and say - This is the real me. Be yourself, and nothing can stop you from being the best! (And the next time anyone passes a taunt, you know what to do).

Back to College (Fall 2015) | Tata Aerosoles

Before I start talking about my look in this post and discuss Back to School necessities for Fall, here's wishing all our readers a very happy and joyous season of Navratri. Dress up in your most amazing colourful outfits for the next nine days, flaunt your best smile and don't forget to dance your heart out on Dandiya beats. Have fun!
So, we all know that most students are currently busy giving their exams (this time, two years back, I was busy giving my semester examinations and the task of studying during the festive season was super tough). But as soon as you finish the last exam, one cannot wait to ring in the holiday season. I know many people who love stocking up on their Fall / Winter college outfits during the Diwali break. It's the perfect time, with deals on the new collection and a variety of styles to choose from. While putting together the appropriate outfit for winter, it is important to remember that your clothes must not just look stylish, but also keep you comfortable and warm. This season, you might want to ditch the conventional colours and opt for warmer, muted pantone hues like dried herb, marsala, reflecting pond or stormy weather (refer to the Pantone colour card for more details) or for those who wish to add a pastel touch, hues like cashmere rose and cadmium orange are perfect for the chilly weather (one of my favourite go-to jackets this season is a cashmere rose wrap jacket). So apart from some good long jackets, sweatshirt dresses, chunky knits, turtleneck tops and the usual necessities, you might want to pick one more important thing.

It is extremely important for you to pick the right of pair of shoes (and honestly, that applies for every season). After all, no one wants sore heels after a long day at college. I recently heard about the launch of Tata Aerosoles, a brand that aims at combining comfort and style together in their range of fashionable footwear. I have always stood by the fact that when it comes to apparel and accessories, comfort tops my priority. So, when I browsed through their latest product catalogue, I was quite impressed. All their shoes promise to provide amazing comfort, without comprising on the style aspect and are well priced. Now, that's everything that a college student needs, right? While traveling in a city like Mumbai, one has to ensure that they choose the right pair of footwear, which has good grip and balance. What if you don't get a seat in that train? Or, what if you have to run behind a bus before boarding it? Students, a lot like working professionals, are always on the go. Especially after every 50 minutes, when they move from one class to another, while attending lectures. That's the reality of life.  And so, I thought the Tata Aerosoles range of footwear comes as a perfect saviour.

What really got me hooked on was the technology that goes into the making of these shoes. The Aerosoles have an internal stitching (the inside out process), wherein the upper part is stitched to the flexible sole and then, the shoe is turned outwards (right side), in order to perfectly place the extra cushioned footbed, which is one of this footwear's highlights. The entire process is called Stitch and Turn. The diamond pattern in the soles make for the perfect base, as it provides both comfort and flexibility. It is great to know that their promise of comfort, flexibility and good fit is not just restricted to the shoe range, but also boots, sandals and even pumps. Who said high heels can't be comfortable, eh? Tata Aerosoles is here to change the game and well, its a good thing for the consumers, as we now have a wide variety of style meets comfort range of shoes to choose from. I can vouch for the comfort and flexibility of these shoes, as I tested this pair for an entire month and it was almost like walking bare feet. So this season, give your old college footwear a miss. Try something from the new Aerosoles range, and trust me, your feet will thank you later!

Acting is a constant process of trial and error - Shahid Kapoor | Exclusive Interview

There is a sense of excitement in the air, every time I am informed that an interview with Shahid Kapoor has been confirmed. The set up is always different, the conversation is fun and inspiring, but personally, the biggest takeaway are his philosophical one liners that stay with you and motivates you to be different. At a time when most actors create a bubble around them and only believe in showing off a candy coloured world, which is far from reality, Shahid believes in keeping it real and has a practical approach towards everything. Of course, you can expect that to come from someone as talented as Shahid, because in his remarkable journey of 12 years, we have seen him grow and change with every film. Just like a chameleon, Shahid adapts to new characters, settings and the world created by his director, with ease,  like a true pro. He did that in Haider, where he completely surrendered the actor in him, to the vision of Vishal Bharadwaj and emerged as the dark Haider Meer. And now, he is all set to woo us with his sharp, suave and fun portrayal of Jagjinder Joginder in Shaandaar, which hits the screens next week.
We meet on a super hectic weekend, in between a long day of photo shoots and media interactions, and that too at a place that he calls his second home - the gym. "I work out here," he said, with a smile on his face. The glimmer in his eye, as he explained why he loves working out and why we should join him for a cardio couldn't go unnoticed (it was the perfect set up to meet a fitness idol and enthusiast like him). The venue couldn't have been better and it was sweet to see Shahid keeping an eye on the fitness machines, as we walked towards the interview room. Dressed in simple yet stylish casuals (and a very quirky pair of printed slip-on loafers), Shahid settled down for a chat with us, but not without his favourite cuppa. What really impressed us was that despite having a flight to catch within a few hours, being the professional that he is, not once does Shahid fasten or cut short the interview time. He was all ears for our questions and we, in turn, took the opportunity to make this an interview to remember! Excerpts from a candid conversation:

From the dark world of Haider Meer to the quirky duniya of Jagjinder Joginder, how did you manage the transition as an actor?
My job as an actor is to adapt, shift to different worlds and sensibilities. If I achieve that, it will help me become versatile. So, I try to do that in every film, where I come from one world and step into a different one immediately. Sometimes it translates, but there are sometimes when it doesn't. In Haider, I was really fortunate that everything was translated well. I think in Shaandaar, the fact that there is a major contrast between the look, character, genre and almost every important aspect helped us create a world which is very different from the one in Haider. And as an actor, I have always enjoyed such challenging transitions. Personally, I don't like transitions which demand me to go from one similar genre to another. It just gets too boring and I feel that I am getting too repetitive. Shaandaar was a welcome change, which I am very happy about. Also, I was moving out from the edgy world of Vishal Bharadwaj, to a completely different wacky one created by Vikas (Bahl), and both of them are fantastic film-makers. It's exciting to come out from a dark film and get into a more fun space, which is closer to what I have done in the past. Shaandaar is a quirky love story, and I guess the last film of a similar genre that I did was Jab We Met (2007). It's rare to do such films, because there is really not much left to do or say in this genre, unless the film-maker has a new point of view.

So, what was it about Shaandaar that really got you hooked on and how did you come on board?
I don't think I have still been signed by Vikas (laughs). But yes, I did meet Vikas when Queen was being shot. As for working with him, we all know that he is a national award winning director and his work, be it Chillar Party or Queen, has always been appreciated. So, no one can question his credentials. Also, I am not the kind of a person who will go the typical way while signing a film. I go by my vibe with an individual and the gut feeling about a subject. After watching Queen, which I saw 6 months before it released and that too, without the background score or other post-production edits. So, it was pretty much the first edit of the film. After watching the film, he told me that there is a new subject in his mind and later, he just said that there is a random one line which he would like to work on and that was the idea for this film. And, I genuinely liked it. But, Vikas believed that there shouldn't be any distraction at this point and said, "If I write it now and you say no after 3 months, asking me to write something new, then I will end up wasting six months of my life." But, I was very sure about this idea. After that, we didn't meet for months, and then one day, he just came up to me and said that the idea we had discussed has been worked upon, which was called Shaandaar. He wanted to discuss the script and I gave my nod immediately. Then he was keen on getting Alia on board, which also worked out. Everything else, like Haider (for me), Queen for Vikas and Highway for Alia, happened after that.

Since the three of you tasted success with all the above mentioned films, do you think the expectations with Shaandaar are sky rocketing at the moment?
Honestly, it doesn't really matter. What really matters is how the film has turned out. What I really like about Shaandaar is the fact that it didn't get made because Shahid, Alia Bhatt and Vikas Bahl, after their respective successful films, wanted to collaborate and do something together. Like I said, it came to us when none of us were hot and happening (smiles). It was our love for the idea that brought us together and we really wanted to work on it. And today, it feels amazing to see how the film is being talked about. I would much rather keep it this way than the other way. But, that's the part and parcel of an actor's life. Like after Haider, people kept asking me "Arey! Now, what will you do?" I can't keep thinking about such things seriously. See, I may keep getting films like Haider, and hopefully, even Shaandaar may do well, but then, there will also be times when I will get films which are not as memorable as them. It's a constant process of trial and error. But, what really matters is how passionate you are about your work. You should enjoy working with the people who are a part of the project. One must work in a process oriented manner, and not result oriented. This has been my biggest learning experience in the last couple of years. Nobody is aware about the end result, so you just relax and enjoy the process. I have been in this business for 12 years, and I have given a large part of my life to this. I started acting when I was 21 and my film released when I was 22. I am 34 today, so it's like doing this work for pretty much my entire adult life. I have given so much of my life to this job, so I better enjoy it.

Jagjinder is an insomniac in the film, and so are you, in the real world. Was it easier to connect with your character in the film because of this trait?
Oh yes! I am an insomniac and I usually sleep very late. But, things have changed and I have become better behaved ever since I got married (smiles). So, the insomnia is almost taken care of and the issue has been resolved. When I was a bachelor, I was more of an insomniac, because there was no pressure on me. Jab khana hain khaa lo, jab sona hain so jao. Those were the days (laughs).

While observing Vikas on the sets, what was that one thing that striked you the most?
Personally, I feel that the world created by him does not exist in real life. It is way too quirky, wacky and cool. But, that's what we all love about him. I honestly felt that Vikas is a director who has a new point of view for even the most basic plots or genres. Actually, if you analyse the story of Queen, it is quite depressing. A girl is ditched before her wedding and she goes all alone on her honeymoon. But the way Vikas presented the journey of the lead protagonist did it all. He had a very funny take on it. So, I realised that he has a different nazariya on everything, which is his biggest advantage.

I am 34 today, so it's like doing this work (acting) for pretty much my entire adult life. I have given so much of my life to this job, so I better enjoy it.

We saw glimpses of your fantastic dance moves in Shaam Shaandaar. But, why is it that we rarely get to see you dance on the big screen these days?
I feel like I have forgotten how to dance. Earlier, I used to dance everyday in my life. Dancing is a lot like cycling or swimming. The more you do it, the better you get at it. But you know, there is something that I decided five years back. People would keep saying, Shahid is a really good dancer and can also act. But, I wanted people to say that Shahid is a really good actor. And I knew that till the time I don't allow my dancing to take a back seat, the actor in me won't get noticed. What used to happen was that in every film, people would want me to dance, regardless of the character's requirement. Then, people would even conceive characters, just so that I could dance. This constant need to project me in a certain light left me feeling frustrated. So, I actually had to push the dancer in me behind and find myself as an actor,  because that's my primary job - to be able to act. The fact that I dance is an added advantage, but that's not the centre of what I do. So, in a way, I am very happy. But, I should get back to it soon.

Do you miss days when you would get ample time to rehearse and perform new dance routines for long hours?
I am complaining because it has been five years and now, I really miss dancing. Dance holds a very important place in my heart. Even when I am not doing anything, one of the things that I love doing is to just go online and watch videos of people dancing and some of these people are damn cool. My brother (Ishaan) and I are huge fans of Les Twins. I was the one who introduced him to Les Twins and now, he has become the third twin (laughs). He loves dressing up and dancing like them. But yeah, I do miss dancing and more than anything else, dance for the skill. Not just for effect. Eventually, what we do is display our skill. But, to practice, hone and improve on a routine is actually the process which is more enjoyable. You actually feel that you are gaining something as an artist. It's always fun to learn something new when you are passionate about it. After you become an actor, you hardly get the time to do all this. So, I miss practicing my dance. I know people come up and say, "Oh shut up! You are a good dancer, so stop saying all this."Log yeh sab bolte hain, but I know that I miss practising like a real dancer!

People would keep saying, Shahid is a really good dancer and can also act. But, I wanted people to say that Shahid is a really good actor. And I knew that till the time I don't allow my dancing to take a back seat, the actor in me won't get noticed.

You became one of the youngest celebrity judges on Indian television with Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded. What made you take it up?
I felt that I was ready for it. I knew that I have done films for 12 years, but I have never attempted television. Also, it's because I think I am ready to anything now. I don't enjoy being myself, as much as I enjoy doing a different character or trying something new. As far as JDJ Reloaded is concerned, I really enjoyed the show and interacting with contestants. But, my true passion is still attached to playing characters. When I watch Game of Thrones, I am blown away by the performances. So personally, if I am offered a really exciting character, I won't care about the medium, whether it is television, films or even online. Like, I loved my father in Karamchand, and that was aired on television. So as far as you perform well, the medium doesn't matter.

What kind of shows do you personally like watching on television?
I love watching a lot of these international series. Some of my favorites include Game of Thrones, House of Cards. I just started watching Empire, which I thought is pretty cool. I saw Boardwalk Empire sometime back, which was pretty interesting. Also Homeland, Tyrant among others. I usually get all these shows on my hard drive and whenever I get the time, I just watch it.

The dancer in you must have enjoyed the process of being a judge on the show.
Honestly, I hate being a judge. Personally, I would hate it if I was the one who was practising, sweating it out and somebody sitting in a suit with with gelled hair would say, "I don't think that was good." I would be like, Aaja beta pehle yeh karke dikha aur is routine par teen din bita (laughs). The experience was great, but being a judge and commenting on each routine, keeping in mind the hard work that goes behind it, was a tough task.

I hate being a judge. Personally, I would hate it if I was the one who was practising, sweating it out and somebody sitting in a suit with with gelled hair would say, I don't think that was good.

From the time you danced with SDIPA in 1995, to turning judge in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa in 2015, how have you seen dance evolve?
I think dancing is evolving a lot now. I feel that we will witness a lot of change in the next 3-4 years. Also, physical fitness has generally become very huge and people have become very aware about how they can be functional in their training, as opposed to just being big and pumped up. The teens today are far more evolved and aware as dancers, than what we were back then, and this is all thanks to the power of information. When we were teens, there was no information and we behaved like complete idiots. We didn't know anything! I remember how when I had joined the gym for the first time, there was a huge instructor, whose name was Lathi sir. Paaji was 6 feet 4 inches and his arms were the size of my thigh (laughs). I was a scrawny kid, and he used to make me lift the heaviest set of weights in the gym. He would simply go (in his punjabi accent), "Haaye laagao ek, haaye laagao do." I didn't know the technique and was only the doing the motion, while he would hold the entire weight. So, it's just an example of how that time, we didn't have enough information or awareness about a lot of things, like the proper technique, how to get fit, the right diet among other things. There was no exposure, because there was no internet. I think that kids these days are blessed with a lot of information. And in a way, that is both their advantage as well as disadvantage. The disadvantage being that having too much information without any experience or training can be harmful. So I think not just dancing, but all the forms of fitness will only keep getting better.

Do you think an actor's chemistry with the director translates on screen and affects the way an actor portrays a character? For example, you have delivered two hits with Vishal Bharadwaj.
Hopefully, we will be third time lucky (smiles). With regard to Vishal, I think I am lucky that he casts me, because he writes some really amazing films. I feel that a lot of times, what you see of an actor, is actually the role. Because as a viewer, the role is the actor. If the role has a lot of potential and the actor is able to do justice to it, it becomes a great performance. Vishal gives an actor the opportunity to shine. He is very particular and meticulous, but is very open minded about everything. And that is one of the nicest things about him. You can only be open minded when you are confident and experienced, because you need adapt and one can adapt to things only when you have the ability to improvise. And he has these two qualities which he uses beautifully and it does help me as an actor.

Saif (Ali Khan) has earlier stated that he gave his career best performance with Vishal in Omkara, and he felt that your best act was in Haider. So, the audience must expect fireworks in Rangoon, because the team will take things a notch higher. What do you have to say about that?
That is one strategy. My way to look at it would be, pata nahi yaar kya hone waala hain, hopefully stab theek thaak ho jayega. Toh expectation kam rakho (laughs). But on a serious note, it is going to be a lot of fun working with him (Saif) and I am looking forward to it. Every film has its own identity and set of positives, negatives. Personally, I don't think I can compare any film to Haider, because films are like babies. Like right now, Shaandaar is eight days away from delivery. Udta Punjab is in the fifth month, and Rangoon is to be conceived, while the last baby I had was Haider. A lot of planning goes behind each baby and it takes more than 9 months to make a film, from conception to release, quite literally. So, personally, I can't choose between any film.

I don't think I can compare any film to Haider, because films are like babies. Like right now, Shaandaar is eight days away from delivery. Udta Punjab is in the fifth month, and Rangoon is to be conceived.

Fan Question: You have worked with Supriya Kapur in Mausam and in this film, you are sharing screen space with your dad, Pankaj Kapur and sister, Sanah, for the first time. How was the experience?
It is a big honour for me to work in the same frame as my Dad, because of the actor and performer that he is. I was very nervous around him. As for my sister, I am extremely proud of her. It was very difficult for me to believe that she has grown up, is an actor and that we are actually doing a film together. It was both an emotional and proud moment for me when I saw her giving the first shot. She had strictly warned us not to be around during her first shot and said, "I have enough pressure with Vikas sir directing me, now please, you guys go away." Since Dad is anyway in his own zone while shooting, he simply walked away. But, I stood behind the tent and kept looking secretly. I even took pictures of her giving the first shot, and I still have those pictures on my phone as fond memories.

Did you help Sanah with any tips or advice before the shoot?
Do you really think these kids listen to anyone? (laughs) I have got more lectures from my younger siblings. The oldest sibling is eight years younger than me, and the youngest one is fourteen years younger. And they tell me what I should be doing in my career. They are like, "Hum apna dekh lenge, but this is what you need to do. Sort your shit out first, bro!" (laughs) They are very confident. Like if I was in Sanah's place and Dad was around on my first day of shoot, I would go, "Dad, please see my shot. Give me some advice and tell me if you want me to change anything." But my sister was just like, "Get out! It's between me and my director." (smiles)

I don't like to create a wish-list for myself. There is no fun in doing something that has already been done. I am someone who likes to roam around in spaces that are ambiguous.

What about Ishaan and Ruhaan? Do they look up to you as a quasi-mentor?
They never ask me for any advice. I mean, never have they pointed out anything. In fact, Ruhaan loves giving advice. Like,  he has very long hair right now, which he loves tying in a bun. He will have this intense expression on his face and when we are sitting on the dining table eating food, he will go, "I need to explain to you guys, what is right and what is wrong." Both my brothers are scorpions. As for Ishaan, he loves to come and tell me how badly I am dancing these days. He keep saying, "Sit up and take notice. Pick it up." It's all because dancing has reached another level today, and his advice is more about dancing.

Are there any other specific characters or genres that you want to explore soon?
Not really. I don't like to create a wish-list for myself. There is no fun in doing something that has already been done. I am someone who likes to roam around in spaces that are ambiguous. It is very exciting to create something in ambiguity, than to have clarity about what you want to do even before attempting it. I like to have a role, not know how it will work out, work on it and then see if it becomes something.

Do you think the requirements of an actor in Bollywood, be it the physique, looks or performance style, are changing with every decade?
But who sets these requirements and parameters? I personally feel that nobody needs to be anything or follow a particular rule. You can be normal, and if you can hold the audience's attention when the camera rolls, you will find work for sure. When I watch House of Cards, I am glued on and mind blown by the lead protagonist's performance, who is nothing close to good looking. But, he is the most amazing thing I have seen moving in front of the camera and that's why I watch it for an hour. Like, I can watch it for eight hours in a week and still not get tired of it. It's good to look nice, get in shape and all that, but that's not the reason why you become an actor. Everything else is secondary. Focus on the cake, learn how to act. Other things are just like an icing.

What would be your advice to actors, who are struggling to find their niche or are still trying to discover their potential?
I personally feel that I am not someone who can give advice or be an example, because I am still struggling and trying to find myself. Also, I wish that everyone, including my siblings, don't go through the kind of struggle that I went through in the last 12 years. But over the years, what I have learned is that eventually, it is important to find yourself and do what truly makes you happy. That is exactly what I am doing right now and it has worked for me. It might stop working 2-3 years down the line, but at least where I am today, it's good for me now. I love doing what excites me. My search is not based on comparisons or what some other actor is doing. It is more about things that keep me satisfied. I am doing exactly the opposite of what you are generally told, like "dekh isne aisa kiya, toh tum bhi karo." Nobody had done a Haider, and very few would attempt something like that. If I was in an earlier phase of my life, even I wouldn't have thought of doing it. But then, I got maximum lover for Haider, only because I followed my heart and did not follow any logic. Today, I am constantly striving to find the actor within myself, accept challenges, do things differently and hopefully, keep at it. That's the only thing I can say. Beyond that, I am no authority to comment on what works and what doesn't. Because things are constantly changing. There is no right and wrong.

So, what's next for your Shanatics to enjoy on the big screen?
After Shaandaar, there is Udta Punjab, which is in post-production. We will start work on Rangoon very soon and I have also finished a day long shoot for AK vs SK.

The Converse Chronicles

Everybody loves a pair of funky and stylish Converse sneakers. Almost everyone, be it a kid, college student or working professional, has used a pair of Converse for years (even till the time it gets completely worn out. Sentiments, you know). For a brand that started off as a rubber shoe company in 1908 and eventually turned to making sneakers, Converse has certainly come a long way and has a very special place in the heart of every sneaker head. It was in 1920 that the All Star range came into existence, and since then, there was no looking back. Their philosophy of making a pair of Converse sneaker an integral part of an individual's life is both unique and special. After all, we all love a good pair of shoes, don't we? You can play, live and run around the world in them. And when you get them customised, they become a part of you. Because, they are made by you.

The ‘Made By You’ campaign is a first of its kind, that will allow Converse loyalists to interact with the brand in a big way.  The Chuck Taylor All Star series proves that the Chuck is not just a sneaker, but an idea. Every new pair carries a powerful message. Your Converse sneakers becomes a blank canvas that is waiting to be filled. The customised pair becomes unique celebration of your unique and true personality.
Taking the popular legacy forward and to celebrate the ‘Made By You’ story, Converse Inc will be anchoring the 1st ‘Made By You’ exhibition in Mumbai and it's happening at Infiniti Mall, Malad. The exhibition urges Converse fans and true sneaker heads to get their oldest pair of Converse (that best defines them) to the exhibit and become a part of the ‘Made By You’ international story. In addition, you also get your own ‘Made By You’ portrait. But the most exciting part of the campaign has to be the customisation process! The campaign would involve the brand offering its consumers an exclusive opportunity to add their unique personality to a pair of Converse sneakers, extending the experience of 'Made By You'.  A graffiti artist will assist guests in customising their pair of old sneakers or a newly purchased sneaker, using a wide variety of stencils and spray paints, creating a sneaker which will be unique to them and will carry forward the campaign of 'Made By You'.

That's not all! There are several celebrities who also swear by their pair of Converse and some of them will be sharing stories of their favourite pair at the do. Some of the prominent Indian faces include VJ Rannvijay Singha, singer Anushka Manchanda, who will be present at the exhibition.

So come, be a part of this fun and memorable Converse 'Made By You' celebration and share your sneaker loving story with us, all day at the Infiniti Mall (Malad) on October 18 (tomorrow). PS: If you are dropping in anytime around 3 - 4 pm, Team Dancebee and I will be around to indulge in some sneaker customisation. Do drop by, join the fun and say Hello. Enjoy the sneakerlicious weekend!

Sneaker Love | Converse - Made By You

Most of you who have been following us on our social media platforms already know that we were part of this incredible campaign called - Made By You, by Converse, last week. The sneaker head in me was super excited to view the exhibition, and also get my own pair of Converse chucks customised. And so were several other fans of the legendary Chuck Taylor sneakers, who queued up at Infiniti Mall (Malad) on October 18, just to add a touch of their personality to their favourite pair.

The day long event saw fans getting their old pair of chucks, and even buying a new pair from the Converse outlet inside the mall. Two talented artists spent an entire day making sneaker fans smile, as they took requests and added funky names, logos and even hashtags on various sneakers. The exhibition was a treat for sneaker lovers, as various glass boxes housed favourite chucks of various known personalities, along with their autographed portrait, that proudly showed off their revamped artified sneakers. The one that really caught my attention was a pair of green chucks, owned by singer Anushka Manchanda. She got the legendary Rolling Stones logo designed on her chucks, and the pair looked absolutely quirky!
After viewing the exhibition, it was time for me to customise my pair of chucks. I picked up a pair of brown sneakers (my first choice was a pair of bright red sneakers, but such was the demand for chucks, that all the colour were out of stock and there was just one pair left in my size). Nevertheless, the colour looked good and perfect to go with a variety of apparel that I own. I was keen on getting my blog logo done, but due to huge demand and shortage of time, the artists politely asked if they can do anything else that relates to dance. Within minutes, I knew that I wanted a musical note on my chucks. After all, music is what keeps me sane all the time, and that's what moves my happy feet too. While one shoe got the musical notes, I got something different done on the other one. Take a look to find out what that design looks like.

My pair of Converse chucks in Brown

And voila! My uber cool, customised pair of chucks were ready in less than 15 minutes. It's perfect to wear with a pair of rugged jeans and even denim shorts. Another favourite is to pair it with a comfortable dress. There is a lot that you can do with a pair of funky sneakers! Team Dancebee and I are humbled to be a part of this landmark global campaign - Made By You - that was launched in March earlier this year. It aims at celebrating the fans of Converse, who have been successfully expressing themselves through their pair of Chucks since more than 100 years. Each customised sneaker and portrait tell a unique story. And it's incredible how Converse has given each fan the power to express themselves through a pair of sneakers.

5 Lipsticks You Must Buy This Fall / Winter

$

Fall is all about the changing colors. Transitioning from sultry hot summers, fall is all about embracing the winds before temperatures drop(here’s hoping they do!). While many would consider them earthy tones to be this season’s situation, when it comes to those lips, fall is the perfect opportunity to break into some vibrant tones along with the basics. Here’s looking at the favorites from this fall that could be carried on to the coming winter.

Zoë's Red - L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Collection Exclusive Reds
This was my go-to color this fall season. A very berry red and just perfect for the Indian skin tone, this shade can be perfect for a 9 to 5 day and for the after hours as well.

Fine Wine - Lakme Absolute Gloss Addict Lip Color
A deep berry pink with hints of silver shimmer, this one is a stunner. I love it for the glittery part ( I love most things shiny!). The texture is smooth and about two swipes can give a subtle color, good enough for the day. The best part about this fine piece of makeup is that it is non-greasy, so the summer fall heat can seldom melt it away.

Nude Beige - Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte
Nope, this nude will not make your lips disappear into your face. A beige with a tint of pink, a spot of shine and warm undertones, this one is anything less of a typical nude boring shade. It's creamy with a hint of a raspberry scent. And the packaging is nothing short of royalty! Yup, I love this one!

Purple Passion - Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Matte Sculpting Lipstick

This one has been around for a while and is a clear winner when it comes to bold colors.  Dark and berry-striden and enriched with a creamy texture, this one is worth every bit of that large hole in your wallet afterwards.

Zenith - MAC Guo Pei Collection
Save the best for the last? MAC is the reigning queen of lipstick brands and love adding a twist to their collections. Guo Pei, China’s famed haute couturier, joined hands with MAC to bring some beautiful jewel tones and rich neutrals. My favorite is the long lasting creamy nude, Zenith. Perfect for all occasions and all times of the day. And do not miss the gorgeous packaging.

While most of these lipsticks are not available in the Indian market, you can always ask your friends and relatives to get them for you during the next trip abroad. After all, you can never have enough lipsticks (not when they are winning both in the colour and packaging department).

Thalgo Rituals at Jean Claude Biguine | Review

Known as a popular skin care brand, which has been around since 1964, Thalgo recently partnered with one of our favourite chain of salons - Jean Claude Biguine. The collaboration presents an exclusive range of facials and rituals, which aims at detoxfying, hydrating and soothing your skin from within. Each skin service is designed keeping in mind different age groups, skin types and concerns, which is perfect, because the wrong facial can often damage your skin on a long term basis.  I was invited to experience any one of their Thalgo skin services and since I had a day packed with meetings in and around Lower Parel, I picked the Palladium JCB branch and opted for an evening slot, so that I could head back home early and chill (before getting ready for another super long day). Read on to know my experience, the ritual chosen for me and our final verdict on the facial menu.

After a warm welcome, the JCB treatment specialist - Juliet, took me to the treatment room, where after a quick chat about my daily routine and lifestyle, Juliet analysed my skin, to understand the main concerns. Since I have never got a facial done (Yes! Never, and I don't think I will opt for it anytime soon), Juliet further discussed my skincare routine and came to the conclusion that a ritual would be better than a facial, since my skin is too young and the main concern is only hydration (I have normal - dry skin, which is extremely sensitive). Juliet suggested that we opt for the Source Marine Ritual (details given below), an hour long treatment that helps soothe and hydrate the skin from within. After a quick change, the lights were dimmed and with an ocean themed track playing in the background, I was ready to get transported to a wonderful world of virgin beaches, islands and a vast ocean.

Ritual: Thalgo Source Marine - deep hydrating and replenishing treatment, the result is a healthy glow by creating a well of vital water in the deeper layers of your skin.

Price: Rs 4000

Experience: The first step of the ritual was to tie a the towel into a turban around my head. After cleansing and thoroughly cleaning my face, the therapist created ocean wave like movements using her hand and kept moving it next to my ears, in order to ensure that I relax my body, mind and soul. The turban ensured that I hear nothing but the ocean waves. After a few minutes, the Thalgo reviving marine mist (my favourite product from the entire ritual) was gently sprayed all over my face, neck and shoulders. A few minutes of gentle massage and ocean wave movements were followed by the usual steps of a clean up - exfoliate, steam and removal of blackheads. Keeping my sensitive skin type in mind, the scrub used for the procedure wasn't harsh and the micro beads gently did its job.  What followed the exfoliation process was another round of mild cleansing, and then a fantastic dry massage (that almost put me off to sleep). Once again, the mist was sprayed and after drying my face with a tissue, the therapist prepared the marine mask. A thick layer of the mask (the fragrance of which made me feel like I am scuba diving at a virgin beach of Konkan and being the water baby that i am) was gently and generously applied all over my face and neck. While the face mask did its job, the therapist again continued the ocean wave - like movements. A few minutes later, the mask was peeled off and after a final round of cleansing, the mist was sprayed once again. The therapist advised that I must not follow up with any moisturiser, and keep the skin free from any product for the next 10 - 12 hours. While treating myself to a cup of lemon tea after the ritual, I noticed how my skin felt hydrated and relaxed, just like it would after a good vacation.

What? - Thalgo Skin Services at Jean Claude Biguine

Price range - Rs 2200 and above

What does it promise? - Restore your radiance and reveal younger-looking skin with customised facials. Jean-Claude Biguine will offer treatments by French beauty brand Thalgo (www.thalgo.in), using its marine-based skincare and body-care products. Thalgo is also an exclusive brand partner at Jean-Claude Biguine for the facial menu, which is divided into three distinct categories: Essential, Exquisite and Anti-Ageing. In addition to the Thalgo facials above, JCB will also offer unique Thalgo Eye Treatments to minimize all signs of fatigue, strain and ageing (additional charges apply). The treatments range from around 30 - 75 minutes and cater to specific age, skin type and concerns.

Services available - Essential: Instant Radiance Facial, Aquarelle Regenerating Facial, Source Marine Ritual, Pure Freshness Ritual | Exquisite: Brightening Rejuvenating Treatment | Anti - Ageing: Collagen Smooth Treatment, Silicium Super Life Treatment | Facial Add-on: Collagen Velvet Eye Expert.

Verdict: I was very happy with the ritual. It left me feeling lighter and my skin got enough hydration before the winter spell in Mumbai. It's like a mini vacation for your skin packed into an hour long ritual.  The prices may look a bit on the expensive side, but your skin is a precious gift and these rituals are worth every penny that you spend. After all, every good thing that you do for your body is an investment. If you are looking to de-stress anytime soon, or if adding a healthy glow to your skin tops your priority, then you must give this range a try. Worth your money and time!

The Ayurveda Trail with Lever Ayush | Review + Giveaway

Everyday, newspapers, e-magazines and websites are filled with stories that speak about the hazards of the kind of lifestyle that we are living today. Maximum stress, minimum sleep, little focus on eating healthy and hours of traveling leaves us feeling tired and drained out. And the number of hours we put at work, without bothering about a break or two? Let's not even get there! All the stress eventually takes a toll on us, leading to severe exhaustion, headache, body ache and if the damage is done on a long term basis, then it can lead to obesity, high blood pressure and even heart diseases. Further, it affects your skin, hair and overall health too. We are all busy running around and working hard to achieve our life goals. But at the cost of our health? Well, that's not fair. At least not to the body that you have been blessed with. Fortunately, we live in a country that has been blessed with the goodness of Ayurveda, but very few brands make a good use of it, delivering products that can help overall wellbeing. Ayurveda literally means the science of life (Ayur - Life, Veda - Science / Knowledge) and it is this very knowledge of life that can do wonders, if used correctly. Ayurvedic therapies have constantly evolved over more than two millennia and today, Ayurveda has gone global. No wonder, Hindustan Unilever tapped this opportunity and recently introduced wonderful range of Ayurvedic products under the brand name - Ayush.

What? Lever Ayush Therapy
Price range - Rs 119 onwards
What does it promise? Ayush aims at helping an individual rediscover health and vitality through customized Ayurvedic solutions, every day. Lever Ayush therapy is an exclusive range of personal care products born of the eternal truth of Ayurveda and the proof of performance through modern science. Lever Ayush therapy range comes with some of nature’s healing secrets discovered by Ayurveda, almost 5000 years ago! Lever Ayush range consists of products for skin, hair and pain (joints, headache among others). They are based on authentic Ayurvedic formulations, where the rarest natural ingredients are distilled into the most effective Ayurvedic recipes. Lever Ayush introduces a range of personal care products that are specifically designed for holistic solutions to problems borne by the pressures of a modern day lifestyle.
What does the range include? Lever Ayush Hair Poshak Oil, Lever Ayush Kesh Poshak Shampoo, Lever Ayush Dandruff Nashak Shampoo, Lever Ayush Narayana Tailam, Lever Ayush Bhringamalakadi Tailam, Lever Ayush Headache Naashak Roll-on among others (To check the entire range and buy products, click here)

In this post, I will be talking about three products from the range: Lever Ayush Keyur Poshak Shampoo, Lever Ayush Bhringamalakadi Tailam and Lever Ayush Suvarna Poshak Cream.

Lever Ayush Keyur Poshak Shampoo (Price: Rs 310, Quantity: 200ml): The consistency of the shampoo is thick. It has a pleasing herbal fragrance, which is not very strong. The shampoo promises to strengthen your hair roots, ends and leave it feeling shiny, smooth. Although it also claims to include both the goodness of a shampoo and conditioner, my hair felt a little dry without following it up with a separate conditioner. During the second wash, I used the shampoo with a conditioner and the results were perfect. The shampoo does a good job of cleansing the scalp well and does add a nice shine.

Lever Ayush Bhringamalakadi Tailam (Price: Rs 599, Quantity: 100ml): This product was tried by one of our volunteers, a 44-year-old female, with issues of hair fall and premature greying. The hair oil promises to prevent premature greying, baldness, darkens hair and promotes growth. After 2 weeks of regular application (twice a week), we could notice how our volunteer's hair became more luscious and her hair fall had reduced by a good 30 %. Although its too early to talk about the effect it has on premature greying, we definitely feel this oil is one of their star products.
Lever Ayush Suvarna Poshak Cream (Price: Rs 210, Quantity: 50g): This ayurvedic face cream promises to keep blemishes at bay and maintain your original complexion, while making your skin soft and smooth. It also claims to add a subtle glow post application. Again, the product was tried by a volunteer, this time, a 21-year-old female took up the challenge and tested the product regularly for a period of 2 weeks. A small dollop of the cream was massaged gently all over the face and neck. The product was used once a day, for two weeks. The texture of this cream is very smooth, almost silky and feels a lot like talcum powder on the fingertips. The fragrance is strictly okay. While the cream does a decent job of hydrating, it may not be the ideal face cream for winter. The cream gets absorbed quite well and as promised, leaves a subtle glow. Its perfect for all skin types. Though, a little too early for us to judge the 'blemish-free' claim, the Suvarna Poshak cream makes for a decent buy.

Verdict: The Lever Ayush range of products do a great job of providing good quality Ayurvedic products at a cost that does not burn your wallet. While we are yet to try most of the joint and other pain easing range of products, we did test the Headache Nashak Roll-on, which is perfect for those who hate balms. Plus, the solution is not very strong, and eases headache quite effectively. From the skin / hair care range, our favourite, most effective product till now has been the Bhringamalakadi Tailam. Even for those who don't suffer from hair issues, a gentle massage with this oil can do wonders to your body. It helps ease stress and transports you to the world of Ayurvedic spas. Overall, we recommend you choose the right set of products and give the Lever Ayush range a try. Zero harmful ingredients, no overpowering fragrances; just the goodness of Ayurveda.

Five Global Fall Trends That We Love | Fall / Winter 2015

Here’s the deal - I (Ishani Chatterji) currently live in New York and Fall here is an absolutely different ball game, compared to what it is in Mumbai. Out here, fall is about apple picking, walking through Central Park to watch the leaves change colors and drinking gallons of Pumpkin Spiced Latte from Starbucks. In Mumbai, fall falls (see what I did there!) around the same time that Mumbaikars experience their second summer along with the splurge of festivities that require them to look like palettes of colours at most times. Having said all of that, Fall is my favourite time of the year in The Big Apple. So I am going to try and put together a quick five “worldly” set of Fall trends for 2015 (and for those in India, you can take it as a guide to look smokin' hot this festive season).

Black IS the new black
The New York Fashion Week saw multiple designers take the “all black or nothing” route this fall. Gothic like outfits combined with sheers, lace and the works were a big hit. Among my favourites were Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein and Coach who did a perfect potpourri of skirts, bling and leather.

Mosaic Moods
It’s raining colourful mosaics all over the place. From the conventional fit and flare maxi dress to the jumpsuit and fur coat, Fall is a “mosaic” affair this year. Colours ranged from muted shades, pastels like peach and even warmer hues like wine. The trend was widely seen at the Salvatore Ferragamo showcase.

Charming Victorians
Who doesn’t love a good ruffle and a high neckline? Add a bit of aristocracy air and you could just be out of a Jane Austen.  Grand gown-like lacy gestures, elegant peaches and whites with just the right amount of black, a whole new Victorian era was created on the ramps.

Looking East
This happened to be one of my favourite trends. Motifs of the fiery dragon by Valentino, Louis Vuitton’s modern dress with the eastern lines and Michael Kors' shiny blingy gold numbers, the East is taking over.

Keep it short
Women are getting comfortable with the raised hemline. Duh, we love our legs! Designers all over are embracing and empowering the mini in blacks, patchworks, warmer hues, eastern motifs and everything under the sun. Love thy body!

5 Times Mindy Kaling Impressed Us With Her Outfits | Style Files

Dr. L aka Mindy Lahiri aka Mindy Kaling is my spirit animal. I just know it! And she has been making a whole bunch of heads turn with, not just her recently published “Why Not Me?”, but also her fabulous outfits! If you watch her show (YOU MUST!), you will know that Kaling is all about mixing prints with prints, neon hues, the blings and all that jazz. And she sticks to this image even she is not Dr. L. Here is my feeble attempt to list out five of her “OMG, I want this” outfits.

When she pretended to wear a one piece
At the Cannes premiere of Inside Out (she was the voice actress for Disgust), Kaling wore, what looked like a one piece gown, a two piece outfit designed by her favorite Salvador Perez. I am not sure what I loved more, the bright colors or the general idea of the outfit!

When she channelled her inner desi girl
For the PaleyFest, Mindy went all Indian with the ethnic Persian blue and gold kurta with a front slit, blue churidaar and a slight dull gold pair of heels. The outfit was from Frontier Heritage and is on my list of outfits for the next Indian (or non-Indian) festival I attend.

When she toned it down
Kaling is usually in the brightest of them all. But that doesn’t mean that she can’t do them dull colours. This Tory Burch outfit is so cute. The printed blouse, suede skirt and boots, not to mention that perfect red lip are so ideal for a sunday brunch situation!

At a Book Signing event
When she went all pink
This was, by far, one of my favourite Mindy Project outfits. Look at all that pink! It was a very classic look, the coat, printed dress and satchel. Only Mindy can wear all that pink and not resemble cotton candy.

When she...who am I kidding, just look at this outift!
Do I really have to spell out why I want to steal this from her?!!!!!!
At the Emmys in Salvador Perez

I don't wanna get bored of my job - Sonam Kapoor | Exclusive Interview

$

Bollywood's favourite fashionista, Sonam Kapoor, can't stop smiling! After all, she is the new Rajshri heroine on the block, and her film, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (which hit the screens today) is already on the path of creating new box office records. We meet her on a hot and humid day, filled with promotional activities, at a suburban film studio. She successfully juggles between solo interviews, channel interactions with Salman and posing with a Diwali lantern, diya and thali filled with sweets for the shutterbugs. The actress has a flight to catch within a few hours (a store opening scheduled in Delhi the next day is on her mind). After completing all the commitments (dressed in a pretty black and gold ethnic dress), Sonam changed into something more comfortable for her journey (and her last interview for the day - with us): a crisp white shirt and Nehru jacket. The minute she is told about Athiya Shetty's compliment (that when it comes to personal style, nobody can be compared to Sonam Kapoor), she quickly stated, "Very kind of her to stay this, but I don't think that's true. There are several young girls and other people who are more talented, prettier and fashionable than me. I just think I am very lucky girl and a lot of things have happened because I am very fortunate."
Well, that speaks volumes about Sonam's approach towards life and work. She is a no-nonsense person, who loves working hard on getting her character right, as much as she loves dressing her best at every event. With a bowl of salad on one side and a cuppa from Starbucks next to it, she quickly settled down for a short and sweet conversation, talking about Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, working with Salman, Feminism and more.

On being a Rajshri heroine
Rajshri heroines have always been iconic. What was your experience of being Princess Maithili, and acting in a Rajshri film like?
It was amazing! Honestly, I love the fact that my character knew what she wanted. In fact, I was just discussing this with Sooraj ji (Barjatya) right now. It's like, during the process of giving these interviews and talking about my character, I realised the importance of a character like Maithili. Her first talkie scene in the film is where she tells her fiancé, listen to me and tell me what is wrong. If you don't communicate, then forget this relationship. I'd rather be alone and be very happy on my own, than be in this relationship and stay unhappy. A lot of girls these days are so afraid to be alone, that they just carry on with their relationship, whether it is with a husband, boyfriend or anyone. And, they just don't say anything. They don't realise that they are strong, capable women and it's okay to be alone. But instead, they prefer being afraid. You know, there is a line in Jerry Maguire that goes, "You complete me." But I believe that you cannot be with someone until you are complete. So, that's one thing that I really like about Maithili. She is not dependent and can take decisions on her own.

On Rajshri Films
Which is your all time favourite Rajshri film and why?
Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (smiles). The reason is quite simple, as it was the first film that I fell in love with.

On Working with Salman Khan

Fan Question

During a recent event, you mentioned that the only two mega stars that you have worked with so far are Hrithik and Salman. Tell us about your experience of working with the two of them.
Well, with Hrithik, it was just three days of work, while with Salman, it was 220 days (laughs). Also, I was fortunate to share the screen space with Salman in my debut film, Saawariya. So, it's obvious that I know Salman way better than Hrithik, despite the fact that I have grown up with Hrithik. There's a huge different between their style and approach towards work. But, both of them are great human beings and very professional. No two actors share the same kind of working style.

Is it the same with all the other actors that you have worked with?
Yes! Because after all, not all the people are same. But, they might have a few similarities here and there. Like, both Fawad (Khan) and Ranbir (Kapoor) have a similar approach towards their work. Shahid and Hrithik work very similarly, because they believe in putting a lot of efforts while rehearsing and are very methodical. As far as Salman is concerned, people have certain assumptions about him, but honestly, he is one of the most hard working human beings I have ever met in my life. He wouldn't have been 'The' Salman Khan, if it wasn't for the way he is. He would work out three - four hours before the shots, knew all his lines and scenes by heart. His rehearsals were bang on. Even after the shoot, he used to work out again and eat right. He is very disciplined. For outdoor shoots, he used to be up by 5 am. There are certain things that you may not expect from such a huge star, but he is a complete workaholic.

On her biggest Takeaway
Is there a takeaway from any film or character that has stayed with you for long and changed your perception towards a particular thing?
You know, before every film, I realise that the character I am supposed to play is nowhere close to me and the biggest challenge for me is - How am I gonna do this? That's when you try to build and create your character and once we finish the film, I realise that somewhere, there is a little bit of me in that part that I just finished playing. So, I do take back something from each character that I have played. Like in Saawariya, I learned patience, while in Delhi 6, I learned to live for my dreams, no matter what. Then, Aisha taught me that friends are an extremely important part of your life, while I Hate Luv Storys made me realise that what you think is right for you, may not actually be good for you. Raanjhanaa taught me that you can't judge a person for the choices that they make. A lot of people didn't like Zoya (Sonam's character in the film), but she was a Muslim girl from Benaras who fell in love with a Hindu boy, and she tried her best to sort things out in the right way. Zoya taught me to be less judgemental. Khoobsurat taught me that no matter how amazing your prince charming is, don't change for anyone, because the boy should change for you (laughs).

On her characters
Your on screen avatar in films is often in complete contrast to the way you are in real life - a fashionista. Do you think that is where the real challenge of getting into the skin of a character crops up?
What to do? My directors like me like that only (laughs). In fact, I have been trying to figure that out myself. Like for Prem Ratan... Anamika (Khanna) worked on my outfits and we had earlier worked together on Delhi 6Mausam and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag among others. When PRDP came up, she was like, "I can't make another sad set of outfits." I was like, "Don't say that. In Raanjhanaa, I was almost wearing the same Kurta in the whole film." But fortunately, PRDP gave me the chance to wear heavily embellished, princess inspired outfits. I have never worn such outfits on screen. In fact, I haven't worn make up in so many films. But, after three days of running around in those heavy lehengas, I was dead! (laughs) It's a good thing that I don't have a set image when it comes to the way my characters look on screen. Each one of them have looked quite different.

Is that also why you prefer choosing scripts that give you a chance to get into a different space with each character?
Absolutely! I don't think I have ever done a role which has been similar to something that I have done in the past. Maybe that's why, people have a tough time remembering my roles. But, they remember it when I remind them (smiles). Like a Khoobsurat that I did straight after Raanjhanaa was completely different, and so was Dolly Ki Doli. Even now, after Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, I am doing a film like Neerja, which is more on the serious side and has me playing the main protagonist. I don't wanna get bored of my job. Also, it's important to reinvent yourself, because every time you come on screen, you need to look fresh. You must give people a chance to look forward to what you are doing next.

On Television
Many actors are taking to the small screen today. If given a chance, what kind of show would you like to be a part of?
I would love to do television. But, not reality shows for sure. I get stressed out even during promotions. I would like to do something like 24, which was started by AKFC. The whole idea was to bring cinematic content on the small screen, which is great. So, I would love to do something like that.

Ranbir (Kapoor) said that he would love to see you host a chat show.
Oh! Ranbir said that? Well, that's because I can make anybody say anything (laughs).

On Feminism
You have always been quite vocal about your stand on feminism. So, what's your personal definition of it?
My definition matches the one that is written in the dictionary (smiles). It is important for us to stand up for what we think is right. It is necessary to promote female empowerment and make sure that everybody gets equal opportunities. Also, promoting tolerance is absolutely necessary. Feminism is not just applied to women, but also to men, transexuals, homosexuals; anyone can be a feminist. Its's just that, people have this preconceived notion of what Feminism means. Feminism is for anyone and everyone for stands up for female rights.

Top 5 Diwali Looks by Bollywood Divas | Festive Style Files

The festival of lights had them B-town ladies bring a twist of modern to the traditional. Bright colours, lots of bling with the occasional bindi and some gorgeous accessories, Diwali had the leading ladies of Bollywood dressed in their best. Here is looking at the top 5 looks that lit up our lives (and Instagram pages) this past week.

Shilpa Shetty Kundra
Ekta Kapoor’s Diwali party had the creme de la crem on the guest list. Among them was the fitness entrepreneur, Shilpa Shetty Kundra. She wore a dull blue Tarun Tahiliani saree with a corset sweetheart neck blouse. The outfit is quite the stunner.

Kareena Kapoor Khan
Royalty is her middle name and she sure knows how to carry it well. Kareena Kapoor Khan donned a Sabyasachi lehenga. Bathed in royal blue, embellished with golden work, her highness looked nothing less than magnificent.

Deepika Padukone
Black and gold is a classic combination. One can never ever go wrong with that especially if the artist is Sabyasachi himself and his muse is the beautiful Deepika Padukone. The actress simply outdid herself (yet again) in the lethal Banarasi number at the Bachchan's Diwali bash. The jhumkas and smokey eyes just added to her already ethereal look. Major girl crush moment!

Sonam Kapoor
The lady of the hour, Sonam Kapoor, did a Tarun Tahiliani number, a gold lace saree with a gorgeous sheer blouse situation. The make up was simple, with hints of nude and gold. Sonam allowed her outfit to do all the talking and kept it minimal on the accessories front.

Genelia Deshmukh
The ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na” girl looked so cute in her Rimple and Harpreet Narula lehenga. By far,  she was the most traditional of them all.  The Chandbali earrings were a great addition to the outfit.

Which look is your favourite? Do you have a favorite outfit from this Diwali season?

Mumbai Pune Mumbai 2 | Film Review

$
0
0

The much anticipated sequel to one of 2010's most successful Marathi films, Mumbai Pune Mumbai 2 opened to a great response (packed houses during the opening weekend) at several single screen and multiplex cinemas and a good number of shows. While the first film, Mumbai Pune Mumbai, solely focused on building the relationship of lead actors, Swwapnil Joshi and Mukta Barve (and the day long story that followed their chance meeting), the sequel further delves into the journey that follows - engagement, marriage, doubts and confusions. The film also introduces new characters, mainly comprising of Joshi and Barve's (who play Gautam and Gauri) respective families. With a great cast, good songs and a popular lead pair, Mumbai Pune Mumbai 2 has everything going for it. But what's so special in it for you to ditch the other festive big ticket Hindi release and watch this film? We give you 5 reasons!

☻ Swwapnil Joshi as the Punekari Gautam is charming and adds many more dimensions to his portrayal of the character. Joshi adds a mature and emotional side to his character, but not at the risk of losing the innocence and Punekari style, which we all loved in the first film. His natural portrayal of Gautam makes the character look very relatable and real. Plus, you know that a character's "Prabhav" (charisma) has worked, when certain male audience members leave the theatre saying, "Gautam is so much like me," and female members stated, "Gautam saarkha mulga bhetla pahije."

☻ Mukta Barve as the vulnerable and confused Gauri is perfect. Her performances have always been very genuine, be it the first MPM, Jogva or even the recently released, Double Seat. She is one of the few female actors who keeps everything very real, be it her performance, appearance or body language. As Gauri, Barve expresses her confusion, fears and whirlwind of the head effortlessly.

☻ While the lead pair (Swwapnil and Mukta) are always a delight to watch, we can't take our eyes off the ensemble cast either. Veteran Actors Prashant Damle, Savita Prabhune, Asawari Joshi among others deliver honest and incredible performances, making their respective families look just like a simple and real Mumbai or Pune family. The director has played it safe by not introducing too many characters, and that helps, as the focus is solely on the two main families.

☻ Direction Satish Rajwade's simple yet impressive direction makes sure that the flow of the film is smooth. There are no loopholes whatsoever. Both the casting and cinematography of MPM2 is top notch. Editing, BG score and Music is decent. Dialogues, just like the first film, are like a cherry on the cake. There is a great mix of emotional, humorous and romantic dialogues, that stay with you even after the film ends. Although the story was good, the screenplay could have been better.

☻ In close to 150 minutes, Mumbai Pune Mumbai 2 teaches you a lot about various relationships (not just that of a to-be husband and wife). If the simple and impactful moments from the first film left a big smile on your face, the sequel will do the same. It's a breezy family entertainer, that blends several emotions perfectly and presents a picture, that is relatable for almost everyone.

Cons: While the entire film was smooth and flawless, we wish the brand tie-ups were a little less. Some of them were almost on the verge of disrupting the flow of the film.

Final Verdict: This sequel definitely has a lot of Prabhav! Go, watch it with your family and have fun. The perfect family entertainer.

Pond's Age Miracle Firm & Lift Range Challenge | Review & Giveaway

The anti-ageing skin care department is filled with tons of items by various brands today, giving the consumer a variety of products to choose from. Among the well known names, Pond's has been a favourite with many women and their Age Miracle range of products have always received a great response. Recently, the brand launched a new line under their Age Miracle range, that focuses on firming and lifting the sagging skin. The 'Firm & Life' line has three products - Targeted Lifting Serum Massager, Face & Neck lifting day cream and an Eye contour lifter. Since the products are targeted at a certain age group (and I clearly don't fit under it), we got a female volunteer (Age: 35) to accept the challenge of testing and experiencing the products for a period of 30 days. Read on to find out more about these products and our volunteer's overall verdict.

What? - Pond's Age Miracle Firm & Lift range: Targeted Lifting Serum Massager, Face and Neck Lifting Cream and Eye Contour Lifter

What does it promise? - This range aims at identifying the need for consumers to care for the sagging skin around their jaw and neckline – termed as the y-contour. The new range provides powerful anti-aging formulations that strengthen and tighten fibres from the inside to reveal a smoother, firmer and lifted y-contour on the outside.

Price: Pond's Age Miracle Firm & Lift Targeted Lifting Serum Massager - Rs 1299 for 25ml
Pond's Age Miracle Firm & Lift Face and Neck Lifting Cream - Rs 999 for 50g
Pond's Age Miracle Firm & Lift Eye Contour Lifter - Rs 899 for 15g

Application: Twist the tube cap (where the word 'on' is written) and squeeze out the required amount of serum. Apply twice a day near the neck and jaw line. As part of a three step skincare routine, this should be your first step.
Texture: Gel based. The formula is very light and absorbs into the skin very quickly.

Experience: The volunteer used this product everyday twice and felt that the targeted areas were more hydrated and firm than before. It does not make the skin feel too tight. Regular application of the serum ensures that the targeted areas are worked on constantly. The packaging was perfect, as the product did not spill.

Application: Apply every morning to a thoroughly cleansed face.
Texture: Very Creamy. This formula is perfect for the ongoing winter season.

Experience: The volunteer used this product once (in the morning) everyday and followed it up with her usual BB cream. The result was hydrated and supple skin, that would stay fresh for a good 5-6 hours (keeping in mind the Mumbai humidity, this experience was decent). Although the texture is creamy, it does not feel greasy or heavy at all. A little bit of the product goes a long way. Again, just like the serum, the cream made my skin feel firm and tight, but did not dry or stretch it in anyway. While our volunteer loved the beautiful glass jar, in which this silky cream is stored, she added that it is unfortunately not very travel friendly.

Application: Apply every morning and night using the cooling applicator, around the eye contour area.
Texture: This product has a cream based texture, which is super smooth and silky. This creamy texture ensures that the eye contour area stays hydrated.

Experience: Our volunteer used this product in the night everyday (and twice a day during the weekend). The cream works very well to make the eye contour area firm and keep it moisturised. This was one of our volunteer's favourite product from the range, as it helped her get rid of some sagging eye bags, that were troubling her since quite sometime. The cooling applicator is a great add-on, as it makes the application process easy and keeps the eye contour area cool (according to our volunteer, this process is almost like a 5 min stress buster for the eyes). The tube is light weight and perfect to carry around and the packaging ensures that the product does not spill.

Final Verdict: So far, our volunteer is satisfied with the experience and has continued with the regular use of these products. The entire range is perfect for all skin types, and with winter setting in, it is a boon for people who issues where their facial skin becomes too tight or stretchy. As mentioned above, our volunteer's favourite product was the Eye contour lifter, but she is happy about making this skincare routine a part of her daily lifestyle. After all, not many products solely focus on firming and lifting, and hence, Pond's has certainly hit the bull's eye with this range.

5 Reasons We Loved Katyar Kaljat Ghusli | Film Review

$
0
0

Music has no boundaries, be it religion or nation. Katyar Kaljat Ghusli puts this message across in a wonderful way. The film, based on a very popular 1960's musical by the same name and written by Purushottam Darvhekar, hit the screens last week. While the main plot of the film revolves around the rise and a fall of an artist due to ego, it also hints that art is immortal and cannot be controlled or ruled by anyone. Every artist has the freedom to express himself, and Katyar... conveys this message, thus making it an important film of our times! After earning accolades from the audience, the film has now been nominated for the prestigious UNESCO's Fellini award, and we wish the team all the luck for their journey ahead. We saw the film last week (wish we could also witness the original play live, as well) and have got 5 reasons that make Katyar Kaljat Ghusli a must watch for one and all.

☻ What do we say about the extremely talented veteran actor, Sachin? As Khan Saaheb, he delivers an award worthy performance! He perfects the roller coaster ride of emotions that Khan Saaheb goes through, rather effortlessly. And, it's a treat to watch him mouth those Urdu lines and get into the skin of his character with ease. Don't think any other actor could have done justice to this important character, as brilliantly as Sachin did. Hats off!

☻ Personally, I have always been appreciative of  Subodh Bhave's work (his portrayal of Balgandharva being my one of my most favourites till date). His dedication in presenting the perfect film adaptation of Katyar... is no different. Bhave has done perfect justice to the two roles, that of an actor and director of this film. With a flawless treatment, Katyar... looks nothing like Bhave's directorial debut. In fact, it almost makes him look like a seasoned director. Also, it's a delight to watch him act. There are moments in the film (especially the jugalbandi) where you end up believing that it is Bhave and not a singer, who is crooning behind the mic. Truly, an actor class apart.

☻ Great to see one of the most soulful singers, Shankar Mahadevan, make his acting debut with a subtle yet impressive performance. As Panditji, Mahadevan emotes beautifully. While he puts up a perfect act, he does an equally great job (or perhaps) of singing some really fine songs. Sur Niragas Ho being  a favourite, which sounds heavenly enough for the gods to come down and bless the singer.

☻ The ensemble cast, mainly comprising of Amruta Khanvilkar, Pushkar Shotri, Mrunmayee, Sakshi Tanwar among others also do a good job. The casting of this film was perfect. Brownie points to Subodh Bhave for being firm on his choices and extracting the best of each actor's potential for their respective characters. From the technical team, a special word for designer Nachiket Barve's research on the bygone era, as his outfits create magic on the big screen. The sets are enough to transport an audience member back to the golden era of music. The screenplay, dialogues and editing were all bang on. Despite 2 hour+ length of the film, not a single audience member was seen getting up from their seats or checking their mobile phones.

☻ Apart from the cast, another hero of this film is the music. The album has 17 tracks, composed by Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki and Shankar - Ehsaan - Loy. Since the film is a musical, songs play a crucial and each of them do perfect justice to the setting and flow of the film. Rahul Deshpande as the voice of Khan Saheb is splendid (incidentally, he also essayed the role of Khan Saheb in a newer version of the play) and creates magic with his phenomenal voice. Mahadevan sings his own tracks. Bhave's Sadashiv is voiced by multiple singers, ranging from Arijit Singh, Divya Kumar to Rahul Deshpande. You may end up falling in love with the music all the more, especially after watching the film. Our favourites? Tough to choose, but Dil ki Tapish and Ghei Chhand are absolutely divine.

Final Verdict: Very few films have the power to leave you speechless! Katyar Kaljat Ghusli will do that to you and more. If you are looking for a visual definition of a cinematic treat, this is it. The film creates a strong impact with its impressive cast, performances, delightful music and an incredible presentation. 100-200 crore club films may come and go, but films like Katyar Kaljat Ghusli stay in your heart forever! Do yourself a favour & watch it.

Vegetable Risotto - DIY Recipe Box | Faasos & Cheflery

Our super busy lifestyle leaves us with hardly any time to experiment with food items in the kitchen (on our own). Hence, most of us either prefer to eat out, depend on packaged or ready to eat dishes or best, stick to good ol'Maa ke haath ka khana. But, what about days when Mama dearest is busy with urgent commitments? Or for those who stay alone? I personally don't prefer ready to eat, packaged food items, and eating out is a strict no-no on most days (and I have just come out of a horrible week long sick leave, thanks to a bad case of food poisoning). Recently, Faasos introduced me to a super cool DIY Recipe Box by Cheflery, where I could prepare various cuisines using fresh ingredients, right at the comfort of my own kitchen. I was given the option to choose between vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes (Since I am a vegetarian, I opted for the former) and voila! The DIY recipe box was home and I was 40 minutes away from a bowl full of Vegetarian Risotto. Read on to know the full recipe and my thoughts on Faasos and Cheflery's latest offering.

Consume / cook the ingredients within 12 hours of receiving the box
Adjust salt & pepper according to your taste

Preparation
1. Finely chop onion, garlic and parsley. Pluck the thyme. Split butter in 2 equal parts.
2. In a hot non-stick pan over medium heat, add oil and then, chopped garlic. Saute the garlic till it turns golden brown and then add chopped onion. Saute the onions till they turn slightly brown. Add butter (1/2) and stir for a minute.
3. Continuing on medium heat, add arborio rice to the mixture and stir for a minute. Add 100ml water and stir for a minute. Then, add peas and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Stir for a minute. Add 100ml water again, followed by 2 pinches of pepper and stir for 4 minutes. Add 100 ml water again and stir for 4 minutes. Add 100 ml water again and keep stirring for 8 minutes.

Preparation (contd..)
4. Add diced green and yellow zucchini to the rice and stir for 4 minutes. Add 40ml water and stir for 3 minutes. Add mascarpone cheese and stir again for 3 minutes. Add the remaining portion of butter, followed by fresh cream and keep stirring continuously for 3 minutes.
5. Add parmesan cheese (3/4) and mix well. Finally, stir for 3 minutes.
6. Place the risotto in a plate / bowl, sprinkle the remaining portion of parmesan cheese and garnish with chopped parsley. Serve hot.

Experience: What we loved about the DIY recipe box was the fact that each ingredient was well packed, especially items like oil and butter, which can get messy if not packed properly. The vegetables were fresh and packed separately too. All the main ingredients were packed inside, except salt and pepper, which of course, a staple in every house. So, that's the only requirement from your end. The box came with an instruction sheet, which had the entire recipe and other details mentioned neatly. While the cooking time was exactly 40 minutes, the entire process of unpacking, chopping among other things, took the total time to an hour. So, on the time front, it's the number of hours spent for your trip to the market that gets saved. While the pros top the list, there is a tiny con too. The cook needs to have a proper idea of the timings and portions. For e.g: Adding water. If you end up messing this part, your entire dish goes for a toss. If you are new at cooking, try making this with your mom or an expert first. Getting an idea of the right mix of ingredients, spices, water and time spent on stirring is very important. Taste wise, the risotto was lip smacking. It had the right mix of flavours, cheese and a lovely aroma of thyme. The rice wasn't too sticky, and tasted yum. Unlike the terrible taste of frozen peas, the green peas used here was fresh and perfect to chew. We finished the portion with a huge smile on our face.

Verdict: A value for money meal, with fresh, healthy ingredients. Saves time, stops you from going out to gorge on unhealthy street side food. The portions are huge and fit for two individuals (or one person who is super hungry). They have got some interesting recipe kits available currently, which includes Mexican Bean Casserole, Pan Seared Chicken among others. All you have to do is download the Faasos app and order your kit (or like the Cheflery page on Facebook and pre-book your kits). Try  it out and you won't be disappointed!

Nivea Beauty Range Review | Winter 2015

Winter is slowly (very slowly) setting in and although most fellow Mumbaikars won't agree (since most parts are still super hot and humid), I have to admit that people have begun complaining about dry skin, rashes, sensitivity already. A lot of us turn to our trustworthy cold creams and moisturisers, one of our favourites being the good ol' blue tin - Nivea. This season, Nivea has launched some really interesting products in fresh fragrances. So, while the blue tin and their super hydrating lotions take care of your face and skin, these new launches will ensure that other important areas too stay hydrated and well taken care of. We are referring to two extremely sensitive areas - underarms and lips. Read on to know our views.

What? - Nivea Care & Colour: Rose and Red
Price: Rs 200
Quantity: 4.8g

What does it promise? Intensively cares and provides subtle rose / red colour. The pro-vitamin B5 provides long lasting moisture intensive.

Packaging: Chapstick tube with a tight fitting cap. The packaging is perfect and easy to carry.

Texture: Creamy. It glides on smoothly and is not sticky.

Fragrance: While rose stays true to its name, the fragrance of red is like a blend of raspberry and strawberry. What's amazing is that none of the fragrances are strong or over-powering. I was more skeptical about the rose variety, as a lot of products in the market use strong rosy notes, which is a huge turn off. The rose fragrance is subtle and fresh, while the red variety is pleasant and not very fruity, clearly making these two lip care products a class apart and notch above from the typical flavours available in the market.

Experience: Nivea's Care & Colour is a yummy, smooth and fragrant lip care in a tube. Every lip care in this range has two layers. The inner formula (in white), with panthenol, works on the core edges, while the outer colour coat keeps your lips hydrated and leaves a subtle rosy / red (depending on the chosen flavour) tint on your lips. The product is dermatologically tested and works well in all seasons. Since we have already started experiencing dry skin issues (dehydrated lips are the first signs), this came as a big boon. The ongoing season is such, where everybody needs that one hero product, that can take good care of their lips and save it from drying out. Nivea's care & colour range of chapsticks do just that! Its a no-nonsense, simple formula that hydrates, nourishes and as a bonus, leaves a subtle tint that looks great.

What? Nivea Fresh Flower Deodorant
Price - Rs 190
Quantity - 150ml

What does it promise? Nivea Fresh Flower Deodorant cares for your underarms. It leaves you feeling fresh all day long. Provides 48 hour odour protection and gentle Nivea care. The product is dermatologically tested and sensitive skin tolerant, with a fresh floral scent.

Fragrance: Very pleasant and fresh. In fact, this is fast becoming one of our favourite deodorant based fragrances. Despite the name (fresh flower), this is a far cry from the usual flowery fragrances available in the market. For us, it was like a refreshing blend of flowers and ocean based tones, that are both subtle and fresh.

Experience: This product can be best explained in five words - A breath of fresh air. Although we would also like to carry this around during the more hot and humid days (read: Spring / Summer 2016), we feel its perfect for the cold days too. The soft, caring texture will ensure that your underarms stay hydrated, and absorb, do away with whatever little perspiration that you encounter. While the deodorant promises 48 hours of gentle care and protection, we felt it did a decent job during our 12 hour long, gruelling work schedule. Post application, you will almost feel like your underarms have got some moisturiser slathered on them. And as mentioned above, we absolutely love the fragrance.

What? Nivea Anti-Perspirant Fresh Natural Roll On
Price: Rs 175
Quantity: 50ml

Packaging: Housed in a glass bottle (just like most other Nivea roll ons), the Nivea Anti-Perspirant may not be your ideal travel friendly option. While the product is well packed, its too heavy and fragile (read: glass) to carry around. The application process is simple, and I personally prefer roll-ons, as they slightly better for the environment (and for personal hygiene reasons, you don't have to share it either *wink*).

Texture and Fragrance: The texture is mostly a mix of gel and water, which feels cool and light post application. Nivea's Fresh Natural has ocean extracts, which lends this roll on its ocean inspired fresh fragrance. So much, that it will almost transport you to a land of cool, breezy virgin beaches. Again, the fragrance is perfect for all seasons and has a long lasting effect.

Experience: If you are looking for a product that really lasts long, and if you are someone with a serious issue of perspiration, then Nivea's Anti-Perspirant Fresh Natural Roll-On is your best bet. One of our team members, who travels by train and faces major perspiration issues, tried this roll-on everyday for a week and noticed that while the fragrance lingered on for a good 6 hours, the anti-perspirant properties actually helped keep all the sweat away. We also used tried this roll-on before a workout and felt super good about the way this formula works. Plus, those ocean notes are just perfect (and so soothing).

Pros: Amazing quality of products at a reasonable rate
The lip care range doubles up as a tinted lip conditioner (multiple swipes will make the tint look darker)
The deodorant moistures and hydrates the underarm skin
All the products have a great fragrances, which is not strong.

Cons: Deodorant contains Alcohol
Roll on comes in a glass bottle, which makes it tough / heavy to carry

Verdict: The new range has something for everyone. While it is tough to choose a favourite, the lip care range definitely gets a double thumbs up. Our daily essential kits feel incomplete without it already.
