Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan's Thailand Sojourn for Thugs of Hindostan

With less than a fortnight left for the release, Yash Raj Films' much awaited action adventure - Thugs of Hindostan, has been creating immense buzz. The film, which boasts of breath-taking visuals and scale, was shot in several exotic locations like Malta and Thailand. Let's give you a quick sneak peek into what exactly unfolded during their Thailand schedule.

The team shot in rain forests and the picturesque Bora Island, but little did they know that it would turn out to be an adventure. Amitabh Bachchan, who plays the interesting character - Khuda Baksh, stated “I couldn't understand Viktor’s philosophy of wanting to go to Thailand to shoot this sequence, but he said we found a wonderful location and was keen on exploring that. I must admit that when I went there and saw the location, it was absolutely awe inspiring." The actor added that it was a massive cave, which was almost 20 to 30 stories high, and he confessed that it was difficult to imagine how nature was able to create this. "While we were shooting on two or three locations, we had visitors without a pass on our location. Huge snakes would suddenly appear out of the rocks. Many a times there were little pranks that everyone was playing by throwing rubber snakes,” quipped Bachchan.

Film maker Vijay Krishna Acharya [fondly called Viktor] chose a cave on the island to be Khuda Baksh’s hide out. But, reaching the set was cumbersome for Sr Bachchan, who had to walk for more than half an hour to reach the cave. So, just for him, the team built a palkhi!

“I had a lot of problems for the final walk. It had a climb, as it was mountainous. I have breathing problems. I tried a couple of times, but it was just not happening. They generously made a Palkhi for me. So, I was lifted and taken to the location, looking very regal,” added Bachchan. Aamir Khan, who plays Firangi Malla in the film, says he was wowed by the location in Thailand. He says, “When I walked in there for the first time, I was taken aback by the beauty of Poda Nui Island. It also felt like a real hideout. It had a massive cave with a huge ceiling and a river flowing through it. It’s a fantastic location.”

With visually grand, immersive experiences and jaw dropping action sequences, Thugs of Hindostan, co-starring Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh,  is all set for a grand Diwali release. The film is set to release on November 8, 2018 in three languages - Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Simmba Trailer | Ranveer Singh's swag as Sangram Bhalerao is next level!

The much awaited trailer of Rohit Shetty's upcoming entertainer - Simmba, was finally launched amidst grand fanfare in Mumbai today. The new 'Dulha' in town - Ranveer Singh, was at his enthusiastic best, as he entered the venue with massive support from the 'paparazzi', who just couldn't stop cheering for their top cop. Clearly, a new mass character is born!

The trailer has Ranveer Singh going dishoom-dishoom all over as the rather corrupt officer - Sangram Bhalerao. While the basic plot is pretty much like your average formula film - corrupt cop turns good to avenge a tragic incident in his loved one's life. Nevertheless, the film has Shetty's entertainment se bharpur 'magic masala' sprinkled all over. Complete with the right amount of [hopefully] action, drama, emotion, romance and tragedy. This one's clearly got it all! In fact, we even get a glimpse of Bhalerao's childhood, and how he was majorly influenced by the impeccable 'Bajirao Singham' during his growing up years.

Sonu Sood plays the bad guy, who of course, starts off as our hero's source of 'illegal' income initially. We hope it isn't yet another stereotypical role for Sood. However, his character does look promising. We also spot debutant Sara Ali Khan, who is clearly on a roll with two films coming up in the same month, back to back. The actress will be seen playing Singh's love interest in the film. And of course, like most of the heroines in an action entertainer like this, she will be a massive source of motivation and inspiration for the apna hero, in the long run.

Hard to miss glimpses of a rather grand song and dance sequence, choreographed by Ganesh Acharya, which is packed with colours and some full on Bollywood-ish signature steps. Singh's efforts to convincingly become Sangram Bhalerao is hard to miss, as he punches and dances his way, topped with some 'Marathi' swag, into your hearts. After essaying some historic roles, it is great to see Singh in a comparatively light hearted, yet dynamic role after a while. As a package, it looks like Simmba has got it all. It looks like the perfect mass entertainer, which is ready to end the year with a bang! Expect seetis, cheers and massive hoots at a single screen.

Overall, we feel the Simmba trailer packs a punch, in pure Rohit Shetty style. It would be interesting to hear the soundtrack and further, witness how this mass entertainer surprises the audience at the cinemas. The film is all set to release on December 28, 2018.

The King Speaks | In Conversation with Shah Rukh Khan | Uncut - Part I

After a year long wait (or perhaps, more), he is back with an all new release. After generating maximum curiosity with teasers, posters and BTS shots all year round, Shah Rukh Khan is ready with the much anticipated Christmas release of 2018 - Zero. What clearly looks like India's very own VFX marvel to watch out for, Zero will have Khan collaborating with film maker Aanand L Rai (known for his romantic-dramas set in the heartland of India), for the very first time. While the actor is known to experiment with his avatar in every film, be it Ra. One, Chak De India or Fan, it would be for the first time that he will seen as a dwarf on the big screen. And no, this ain't your regular fare, where a body double or fake tricks are used. Zero is said to be a state of the art VFX film, and Khan's team at Red Chillies VFX promises to leave no stone unturned to turn it into a memorable experience for the cine goers.

On a breezy December evening, while trying to catch up with the peak hour Mumbai traffic, we were invited for a conversation with Khan at a suburban studio. It was a tough week for the actor, what with back to back events, a big fat Indian wedding, and promotions for the film in Dubai. Dressed looking his dapper best, complete with a grey jacket to beat the breeze, Khan walked out of his swanky vanity van and rushed in to greet us. Despite the tough schedule, he looked happy (and handsome as ever) and welcomed us with a smile. What followed was an uninterrupted, long conversation on all things cinema, life, VFX, and of course - being Bauua Singh for Zero. As he continued to sip on hot coffee from his tumbler, we got ready to shoot our questions! And of course, the actor was all ears, as he sat down for a chat, while flashing those legendary dimples. Here's our much awaited interview, an uncut conversation series, presented in three parts. Presenting Part I of our conversation with Shah Rukh Khan:

What went into the conceptualisation of your character - Bauua Singh? What were the key personality traits kept in mind, before the character was actually given shape?
It's not really experimental, but just a physical difference in a character. As much as growing a moustache, but the technology to create this and the process took very long. Also, the film's basis being that all of us spend most of our time wishing that we could be happier. I wish I had this, or could do that. And, we have so many people around us telling us how we should be. But, we don't realise that each one of us are unique. Nobody is perfect, except I joke - Katrina Kaif (laughs). Jokes apart, we can agree that no individual is perfect, either mentally, emotionally or physically. I think we should accept that fact, so that we don't waste time trying to be someone else, while time passes away. Because I believe that life is too short. You just need to believe in yourself - this is who I am, and this is the best I can be. Look at things, that you otherwise consider as flaws, like your uniqueness. Agar main height main chota hoon, toh woh ek advantage hai. If you are someone who cribs - main lamba nahi hoon, gora nahi hoon, patla nahi hoon, ya mere maa baap vapas nahi aa sakte hain; Just tell yourself - let me enjoy this one life that God has given us. To be able to create that vibe in Zero, we needed some incompleteness in our film. So, we added three - there is a physically challenged person, there is a neurologically challenged person, and then, you have the most beautiful woman, who is emotionally challenged. If we accept our flaws and limitations, we can grow as a human being.

Bauua Singh is clearly portrayed in a natural manner, without the unnecessary dose of emotions or sympathy. Was that intentional and integral as well for the film?
That's precisely why we chose to have Bauua's physicality a certain way. It could have been any of the three characters, but this was integral to the story. In fact, we were worried that this should not become the main stay of the film. Thankfully, from whatever I have seen so far, I feel that you overcome that right after 10-15 minutes. We definitely didn't want his height to be a gimmick. Aanand [director] hasn't shot any sequence where people go 'Arey dekho, chota height wala ghoda chala raha hain.' Even if he is doing that, then it's normal. The idea was to ensure that his character is acceptable. Secondly, when you have characters with special ability, a lot of emotions shift towards sympathy. Hence, we have ensured that the characters don't appear like they are in need of sympathy. It shouldn't be like 'Arey Bechara' or 'Bechari'. Whether it's from their friends, family, those around them or even the audience. We wanted to bring about an equality, and not bank on sympathy. And, I don't think any human being looks for it either. Yes, we look for love, friendship and happiness. But, definitely not sympathy.

No individual is perfect, either mentally, emotionally or physically. I think we should accept that fact, so that we don't waste time trying to be someone else

Considering this was the first time you are essaying the role of a dwarf, did the character come with its own set of challenges for you as an actor?
No, I think VFX made things very easy for me. So, during the first 7-8 days, the process took us much longer than we thought, and then we realised. We took 200 days to make the film, and that was followed by a lot of work on post production. Beyond that, I don't think so. Zero is a very cosy and emotional film. By solely highlighting that this is a VFX film, we didn't want to lose out on the small joys, relationships and elements that make it different. So, the VFX team told us - "Behave the way you are. We will manage the rest." So, I had to be careful of minute things. Like, I can't walk with a longer slide. If I climb stairs, it has to be a ramp, so that my steps looks smaller. Some touch ups during dance. Otherwise, I was more or else asked to behave normally. While shooting, I used to actually stand in a pit most of the times. So, rest of the cast could see me from a certain angle.

Was there any real person who inspired or helped you understand the nuances required to essay Bauua Singh, especially the movements as a dwarf?
Yes! Ashish, who is an actor from Delhi, helped with everything behind the scenes. The idea was not to use a body double, so we didn't want to duplicate. But, Ashish has worked really hard. He would enact every scene before we did the final shot, so that the character has the right perspective. That was a technical requirement. He was extremely helpful and sweet.

For me, the journey is important. I don't focus on the finish line, but look at it from the perspective of a milestone

Zero is considered to a complete number, yet incomplete. What's your perspective towards the number like, and how do you co-relate it to the film? Also, do you perceive yourself as a complete artist?
Zero is a perspective. It is nothing, and yet complete. That's the whole film. Sab nazariye ki baat hain. I'll tell you what, I have never felt complete. As an artist, I still feel incomplete, and if I am not, then I would not like to work. Why else would I wake up in the morning and strive to work harder than I did a day before? I am always thinking whether I can bring in something new within the commercial cinema set up that I work in - be it as an actor, producer or whichever capacity it maybe. So, I am extremely restless. I believe that if you think you are complete, then you are boring. I don't look at things in order to complete them. For me, the journey is important. I don't focus on the finish line, but look at it from the perspective of a milestone. I never plan things, nor do I have set ideas - this is how much I should earn, the number of awards I should win, or how many hit films I should have make. It's all very organic, because once you work in the industry as long as I have, specifics become less important. You can't pinpoint and say, "Picture aisi banao, toh aisi chalegi. Friday ko collection hoga," No matter how big an expert you are, eventually, the business is complete dependent upon the story that you are telling. So, I find myself becoming lesser expert about a film, and I think that's one reason why I am enjoying the process of working on the films that I am doing. I am just very happy, and after working in the industry for 25 years, the only reason you should continue working should be for pure happiness of your art.

You have spoken about the amount of efforts that have gone into the making of this film. Is there any amount of nervousness, especially since you are trying something unique yet again?
I think for this film, I am a little more nervous than the usual. We've been working really hard on all the aspects related to the film since so many months now. Through the process, you get so tired, that you really have no feeling left. You just hope that what you have made is liked and accepted by the audience. And, you never know. Sometimes, people end up liking films that you don't think are that great, and then, some don't like what you think is good. I have worked for so many years, but I can't analyse how a film should be. I guess those who spend money on it are the ones who can analyse it best - the audience. So, I just let things be. Ab jaisi hai, vaisi hai. Uska kuch kar nahi sakte (smiles).

The King Speaks | In Conversation with Shah Rukh Khan | Uncut - Part II

Taking off from where we left in the previous part, here's Part II of our candid conversation with superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Excerpts from our chat:

As an artist, how did you deal with the shift in psyche, especially while being in and out of a character that has physical limitations, and a completely different personality?
Like I mentioned, my portions were shot while I standing inside a one and a half feet deep pit. There were also boxes, which would move wherever I went. So personally, I never felt short, except while standing next to Anushka or Katrina (laughs). On a serious note, Anushka's character even has a line - 'Relationship barabari ka hoga', which is even a part of the trailer. Because technically, we are the same height in the film, as she is seated on her digitally controlled chair. I never felt any difference, except for a small fact that it was like walking two steps below.

What about the sets, costumes and props? How did you work around those, considering you could actually see the final look post structural changes?
I'll tell you what was difficult. A lot of times, we would shoot a scene, and after 3-4 months while watching the structure change, we think it looks really good. Sometimes, it would look worse, because when he becomes small, everything feels different. In fact, some scenes even had to be re-shot. If I did something with my own style, it looked wrong on a shorter person. It's a little difficult to describe, but if you notice the romantic track (Mere Naam Tu), his movements are a little child like. Like chest thumps and jumps. He can't do tight moves, so even the choreography had to be a little loose. It was during the look test that I did around 2 and a half years back, that I noticed, something just wasn't right. Even the props were bigger for me. For instance, if it's an iPhone 8 for everyone, then that's X for me. If you read a normal book, mine is a bit bigger. Shirt - trouser fittings had to be kept in mind. We also wanted him to have a slight paunch, which isn't too prominent, but at the same time, he should look attractive. So, those elements had to be kept in mind.

We had to buy a machine called Techno Dolly, and have it sent from overseas. It's actually used for shots in Games of Thrones as well

Tell us a little about the inclusion of aeronautics in the film. Were portions of the film shot in NASA?
Well, there is no mention of NASA as such. We have built our own space research centre. Personalisation was necessary, as NASA only allows one film to use their name per year, and they already had 'First Man'. So, we become the second one. However, we did shoot some scenes there, and we had requested if another name can be used. Especially because we have taken certain cinematic liberties in the film. So, the permissions were necessary.

We are making the biggest and largest number of films in a year. We assume that we are the best film makers in the world

What are your thoughts of the use of VFX in Hindi films. Do you think it needs a better push in the Indian film industry, with the kind of genres we are experimenting with today?
VFX has to be much more prominent in Hindi films, for cinema to have better story telling. We are making the biggest and largest number of films in a year. We assume that we are the best film makers in the world. But, I think the new influx of audience that will come in the future, that is kids who are now 7-8 years old, they will not be very forgiving about the cinematic sound and visual experience. They are used to watching the latest films and songs in full HD on phones or computers. Some beautiful films with a great overall visual experience have released recently, and have been accepted by the audience. It is only a matter of time that the numbers will increase. These children will grow up watching such films, even in small towns, thanks to the growing connectivity we have today. In the future, they won't accept excuses like, "Arey, Hindi film main kuch bhi chalta hai." That excuse is fine for us, and mine would be the last generation, who would see a tacky film and say - But still, this is the first for India (laughs).

Go on....
In fact, you are still younger. I was telling someone, how it was 15 years ago that I first went to a multiplex. But, now I am used to that recliner chair, big screens, and flavoured popcorns. But when I was growing up, cinema halls were very rundown, at least most of them. Now, since I am used to the multiplex experience, if you take me back to the old hall, I might not be comfortable. Even if it's another country, I would be like - Arey, yeh kahan aa gaye. Mujhe picture nahi dekhni. So, kids are already used to that world. And when I speak of VFX, it's not just films like Baahubali. There is so much more to VFX than that. It can be used even for the smallest of films, like Zodiac in Hollywood, which is made over a period of 15-20 days. A lot of VFX is used for simple details - like speed, cars, camera movements, and it can't be pinpointed specifically. So, I feel film makers should come forward and make use of this technology to enhance the overall movie experience.

Film makers should come forward and make use of technology to enhance the overall movie experience

When it comes to the use of technology, you and team Red Chillies VFX have always taken things a notch above. But, technology often comes with its own set of challenges. What were some of the hurdles that you came across during the making of this film, and how did you over come it?
While shooting for the track with Salman (Khan), and there are a few scenes as well, where we could not get the moving shots right. The film became very static, as you had to shoot five times - background, actors, crowd among others. So, the layering became difficult. Eventually, we had to buy a machine called Techno Dolly, and have it sent from USA. It's actually used for shots in Games of Thrones as well. But, buying a machine wasn't enough, and so, we had to get a person who could perfectly manage the equipment. So now, they have their own technique of working and understanding, and we haven't worked on that machine before. Hence, the director had to learn how to work on that machine, which by the way, it quite big. Just the other day, we were shooting for some additional scenes for the last bit of the film, and there was a fire. While the fire could be controlled well in time, as it wasn't that big, but the water used to douse the fire went into the machine. So, the whole thing stopped working. Of course, we could shoot in static, but everyone was obviously worried. Also, it was sad, because we bought this expensive machine, perhaps a first in the country. Luckily for us, after keeping it in a silica tank or something, the machine was up and working within two days. So yes, technology does bring along some hitches. Sometimes, you do make mistakes. Of course, there were some good parts too.

And what about the song with Salman Khan?
So, while shooting with Salman, I had to jump in his arms. We thought he will have to be hooked on something. He was standing at quite a height, and I had to take a jump. Obviously, when I jump, that will have a lot of force. So, we wanted him to be put on to a wire. But, he is so strong, that he didn't move. That solved a lot of problems (smiles). Because if had fallen or moved in a stranger manner, we couldn't have pulled off that shot. Certain shots may start looking a bit weird if not executed properly. Then, in some shots I have to jump into a rickshaw, or even Zeeshan's lap. So, somebody discovered that if a string is put up, I can jump across and reach (laughs). These little things were experimented with. Some look real, some unreal. Certain romantic scenes had to look a certain way. Now, when Katrina bends down to kiss me, she can't touch me too much. That's because my face gets covered and it cannot structured later. So, angles had to be set. Beyond that, we couldn't judge or look at what we have shot. Usually, we are used to seeing our shots on the monitor. It was a lot of hit and trial. That's why, we took a lot of time to shoot this film with complete perfection.

Zero | Film Review

$

They say - Zero is a complete number. And yet, one witnesses the lead characters of Aanand L Rai's romantic - drama as being incomplete in their own way. Be it physically, emotionally or mentally; each integral character is fighting his / her own battle. That is exactly what sets the tone for Rai's Zero, which unfolds as a simple yet beautiful tale. Oh, and there is a lot more to the film than just a lead protagonist shown as a dwarf. Wanna know more about Khan's much anticipated Christmas release, without any spoilers (of course)? Read on:

Bauua Singh (Shah Rukh Khan) is not your average hero. For someone who dreams of knocking off villains as a countryside brave heart,  Singh is actually a blunt, cocky, selfie obsessed man, who won't think twice before showering his friends with bundles of cash. His only weakness? Superstar Babita Kumari (Katrina Kaif), who he aspires to marry. Singh's biggest personal dilemma happens to be his height, as at 4'2, the man is a dwarf. However, that doesn't stop him from being his 'filmy' self. So much, that he even has a Dhoom 3 inspired outfit reserved, just to watch Babita on the big screen. His antics are often supported by a best friend (Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub), who never leaves an opportunity to deliver latest updates from Babita's life, published in various magazines and newspapers, directly to Singh.  Meanwhile, it is revealed that Singh secretly met a renowned Space Centre scientist - Aafia (Anushka Sharma) via a matrimonial site, and the two went on to become more than just friends. Enter Babita, who unexpectedly meets Singh, just a night before the most important day in his life. What follows is a tale of twisted emotions in Aafia's life, unravelling the dark side of love in Babita's life, and of course, Baaua's quest - jo zindagi katna nahi, jeena chahta tha.

Bauua Singh is not your average hero. He dreams of knocking off villains as a countryside brave heart

Rai is known to tell stories that are deep rooted in the heartland of India. Tales that explore the real, raw and vulnerable sides of his characters. Be it Raanjhanaa's Kundan or Manu from Tanu Weds Manu; they are often flawed. The lead protagonists in Zero are no different, except maybe Sharma's Aafia. But, these very flaws and challenges help Bauua, Aafia and Babita discover themselves in a whole new perspective, during different stages of the film. It won't be fair to reveal the main plot (and we never deal with spoilers), but a Standard 10 pass Bauaa achieves a feat that he wouldn't have ever dreamt of. Hence, these challenges become their biggest strength, and in a way, a strong highlight of the film.

Flaws and challenges help Bauua, Aafia and Babita discover themselves in a whole new perspective, during different stages of the film

Music composer duo Ajay-Atul deliver yet another winner, with songs that add a special touch to the narrative. The tracks fit well, and have been wonderfully composed. Especially Mere Naam Tu, which is hands down of the best romantic numbers, both sung and shot in recent times. Then there is Heer Badnaam (composed by Tanishk Bagchi), and a soothing slow number that appears right before the climax. The background score is perfect. Without being too over dramatic, it's the perfect addition to the moments that unfold. Manu Anand's cinematography is decent. One feels the editing could have been a bit tight and crisp in the second half. Especially towards the last 15-20 minutes, where the film felt a little over-stretched. Himanshu Sharma's writing scores full points in the first half, and even during the initial part post interval. However, one feels like the strings loosen up towards the end, where the plot starts feeling a bit too ho-hum. The ensemble cast comprising of Bauaa's parents (Tigmanshu Dhulia and Sheeba Chaddha) and his best friend (Ayyub) perform well.  Be prepared for some starry cameos too, with the likes of Salman Khan, Deepika Padukone, Kajol among others making a splash. Though, the special has got to be Late Sridevi's final glimpse, looking stunning ever.

However, the film primarily focuses on the journey of three integral characters - Aafia, Babita and Bauua. Katrina's swag as the unabashed diva Babita Kumari is simply incredible. If there is anyone who gets maximum cheers after Khan's entry, it is Katrina. Popular actress with million fans, yet a doomed diva with a broken heart; Katrina does a fine job of bringing out Babita's inner turmoil. Absolutely loved her glamorous on-screen presence. But, it's the emotional scenes, that showcase Babita's vulnerability, where Katrina nails the expression and how! Wish she could have got some more screen time, though. As the genius scientist Aafia, Anushka delivers one of her finest performances in recent times. She puts together a perfectly nuanced, controlled act; keeping in mind the limitations she has due to the character's disability (cerebral palsy). It ain't a simple task to express yourself with limited movements in a film, where the co-star's character is unapologetically rude and yet, fun loving. Anushka does complete justice to her character. As an actress, she has never failed to deliver in the past, and has always given her 100% to every role. Aafia is no different, as she creates an impact with a fantastic performance.

Katrina's swag as the unabashed diva Babita Kumari is simply incredible, while Anushka delivers one of her finest performances in recent times

However, Zero's biggest heroes are those who literally carry the film on their able shoulders with élan. The first? Of course, Shah Rukh Khan. He is the heart and soul of Rai's vision, which takes Bauua from Meerut to United States of America, despite all the hurdles and flaws that the character overcomes. It's impossible to doubt Khan's performance in any film, as he never leaves a stone unturned to give his finest best to every character. With Zero, he takes things a notch above with an all new avatar. And yet again, he triumphs. Don't just go by that height, mind you. It's a mix of his brash behaviour, witty dialogues, impeccable style, charm and craziness; and it all comes together to win your heart. He excels in some fine emotional moments, leaving you a teeny bit teary eyed too. Khan steals the show and owns the film, leaving you with a smile, and moments that define the film. The film belongs to SRK in every sense, and he delivers a flawless performance. The second hero of this film has got to be the team behind it's VFX. A lot of effort and hard work has gone behind putting together this film, especially post shoot. The film, especially it's lead protagonist, relies heavily on VFX for his physicality. Every minute detail has been perfectly crafted, especially Khan's structure, facial expressions and his movements. Kudos to the VFX team at Red Chillies for a fantastic job.

The film belongs to SRK in every sense, and he delivers a flawless performance

Rai's style of film making makes the first half a breezy ride. Packed with impeccable humour, some wonderful romantic moments, and emotional scenes, the first half truly wins your heart, especially with its good writing and some really well penned dialogues. We wish the second half could be a bit tighter and perhaps, shorter by a few minutes. Nevertheless, it's the overall experience that overshadows the drawbacks. Khan, Anushka and Katrina - the trio's fantastic act, state of the art VFX, melodious music and wholesome (yet emotional) entertainment makes this a good watch at the cinemas with your family and / or loved ones. Bauua toh chaa gaya, bhai!!

Verdict: Watch it for SRK, and the two leading ladies, who steal the show with their performance. This one's got all the elements of a romantic-drama, with some 'unique' VFX twist that makes it worth a watch!

A Crisp White Shirt | The 2019 Story

2018 felt like a swift, fast paced yet beautifully weaved tale. It began on a slightly low note, where struggles and hurdles topped one upon another like a mountain of the highest order. Slowly, day by day, a shiny bright ray of sunshine began showing signs of hope. As months passed, newer developments began taking shape, and life as they say, left me charmingly surprised. Who knew that after facing a rather tumultuous five-six month period, packed with ups and downs, I would end up finding my way back on a fresh path - that of hard work, passion and following my dreams. All this, along with new beginnings, discoveries and meeting people, who enter your life as a blessing in disguise. And never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine, that the year would end up blessing me with more than I could ever ask for. Well, it is rightly said - the almighty blesses you when you least expect it.

Here we are, kickstarting a brand new year. With a big, bright smile and gratitude filled heart. Gratitude - for making 2018 a year to remember, and for giving me the opportunity to start this year with everyone and everything that means the world to me. For keeping me on my toes, while I continue to strive and keep up with all that I am passionate about. And finally, for giving me the chance to beam from ear to ear, while watching good things happen to those around me. I have never been a 'resolutions' person. However, it's time to start 2019 on a fresh, clean note. Just like a clean, crisp and extremely stylish white shirt. Gonna make it a year to remember! Cheers, 2019.

The Cheat Sheet | Emraan Hashmi - Exclusive Interview | Part I

That he has a carved a niche for himself as a star, with films that deliver chartbuster music hits, and his earnest performances garner appreciation from all corners, is a known fact. However, after entertaining the audience as an actor, Emraan Hashmi is now geared up to step into an all new role - that of a producer. With his banner - Emraan Hashmi Films, ready with the release of their first production venture 'Why Cheat India', and a string of interesting films lined up; Hashmi is surely a happy man. On a breezy Wednesday afternoon, we caught up with the busy man, in between promotions of his latest film. Right before a shoot, we were invited for a rather candid and leisurely chat at his tastefully done up (and may I add, beautiful) abode in suburban Mumbai. He is all gung-ho about the release, and seems visibly excited about the digital space, with a plethora of ideas waiting to take off. For those who came in late, Hashmi is all set to join the web series bandwagon with Red Chillies Entertainment's much awaited show 'Bard of Blood', where he will be seen playing the lead protagonist - Kabir Singh. After a long time, fans of the actor will get to see more of him, both on the big screen and other platforms. Naturally, he is enthusiastic about this phase, and so are we. As we settled down after a quick exchange of greetings, armed with questions ranging from his films to digital media and more, the actor looked all set to shoot his responses. So, here we go! Part I of our exclusive interview with Emraan Hashmi:

Why Cheat India - your first production venture,  Bard of Blood - first series for Netflix, and finally saw the release of a long awaited film - Tigers. It’s been quite a year!
It was all pretty unplanned (smiles). Tigers was something that has been waiting in the cans for the past couple of years. It was with the director for the past fourteen years, as he researched the film way before it got out there on the field for shooting. But, for us, we were just trying to get this message out. We are happy that it is finally up there for people to see and understand what is happening in the developing part of the world. I am extremely happy with the response. Also, Why Cheat India has shaped up really well, and I am happy with the acclaim that the trailer has received. When Soumik (Sen - director) came to me a year back, I was really excited about this idea, because it really is one of a kind. We haven’t seen a film that focuses on the education system through this perspective. Not to generalise Hindi films, but usually, there is this whole Masala film zone that does well at the box office. But, there is a certain frivolity in that. You don’t really address issues. It’s really difficult to address an issue, and at the same time, make the film entertaining, which I liked when I first read the script and liked the idea back then. And, I am happy that both the teaser and trailer received a fantastic response. Just like Tigers focused on an issue, this too focuses on a pertinent issue that is plaguing our education system. Of course, this doesn’t resolve things overnight, but it definitely starts a conversation. It’s a film that is not just important for the kids, but also for parents, as they don’t know what’s going on. The nexus that works behind the closed doors, and how the education system has been fractured.

Talking about Why Cheat India, what was it about the script that caught your attention and left you impressed?
Conversations about the education system. My journey in school and college has not been very different from other people’s journey. Everyone hates it, as there is a laborious process of getting through those various exams. Whenever you talk to anyone who has been through this process, even during the 70s and 80s, or during the 50s when my father was growing up; everyone has the same story. It’s just regressive and is stuck in time. We are seeing the 21st century from a 20th century lens, as it feels like the education system is stuck 100 years back. And, you do see a lot of corruption around in the country, with education being an extremely corrupt system as well. So, one was definitely the internals of the system which is completely fractured. The other one that there are traditional end of things, where people are making money, and it’s a strong nexus. From fake degrees to appointing faculties; a lot of gets done. All of these factors need to be addressed. It couldn’t have been addressed in a film, if it wouldn’t have been entertaining. So, he has added some great characterisation.

We haven’t seen a film that focuses on the education system through this perspective

Tell us a little bit about your character in the film.
It was a departure for me, from the characters I have played in the past. People have loved the characters I have played on screen, and most of them haven’t been devious. This has shades of that, but he is a very ‘wolf in sheep’ clothing kinda guy. Someone who will pray in the morning, and then makes life miserable for people. He has got no ethics, and is an unapologetically bad guy. Still, he is the loveable bad guy. And, that’s how the anti-hero is changing in the past couple of years. You make the audience hate him, but also add things that he stands for, which you love him for. So, he is a blend of both! And of course, it does have 4-5 songs in it (smiles).

Why Cheat India marks the first venture under the banner - Emraan Hashmi Films. In the future, what genre of films would you be interested to back or support, as a producer?
There are certain genres that work for the audience, but don’t go with my sensibilities. One of them is comedy. Not putting down comedies made in our country, but I don’t connect with that. But, if I had to do a comedy, I wouldn’t mind it, but as a producer I would love to do a comedy that I’d want to see. Something which doesn’t alienate the audience, but at the same time, doesn’t dole the same content that has been churned out over and over again for the past 30-40 years. I like real films like Why Cheat India, which can also entertain at the same time. So, I would want to do more of these kind of films. I would also like to explore the action genre in a manner, which would be a drastic change from the kind of regular action you get to see. They have seen bits of it in films like Awaarapan, Baadshaaho and will get to see a lot of it in Bard of Blood. But, again the action hero in our country is something I don’t get. I don’t understand a guy fighting 15 people. If I get into this genre, I would like to break the mould. Let’s see, once the film releases, I will sit down and choose which genres I would want to explore.

As a producer, I wouldn't want to alienate the audience, but at the same time, I won't dole the same content that has been churned out over and over again for the past 30-40 years

Since Bard of Blood marks your debut in the digital space, I would like to know - what’s your take on the shift of entertainment consumption on OTT and social media platforms?
The shift is huge. Six-seven years back, when the digital boom hadn’t hit, our industry thought that people were consuming things on music channels, television. But, 80% of the people now consume it on YouTube. Most of the people who come to cinema halls actually want that time wherein they can watch their favourite content when they want to see it, and not at a particular or set time. That’s one power we’ve got as an audience, and it’s here to stay. People from our industry resisted, because their major livelihood does not depend on it right now, and they do see it as a threat. But, everyone will eventually jump on the bandwagon, which is clearly happening. It’s like the advent of television after radio, or VHS after television. Initially, people resist and then jump on it. So, digital is in that sphere and is growing very fast. For e.g: Netflix wants their next 100 million to come from India, which is a huge number, and they are willing to explore that in their five year plan.

Go on....
See, it won’t eat away from films, but it will be parallel avenue. It will certainly make us pull our socks up and think about the content that we are presenting to the audience. Right now, when people are consuming content on these platforms, you can’t keep churning out the same of films that you did a decade back. Because, they are now exposed to a lot more, and have experienced a variety of genres. So, it will definitely keep us on our eyes. Like, even for a show like Bard of Blood. I am a big fan of web shows. With films, everything is compressed into two hours. But here, it’s like great literature, where you have enough time for characters to breath. They can form over a period of 8-10 parts in a series, which is not possible with films. It’s a different platform, but there will always be takers for cinema when you go for communal viewing, and of course, the personal or family viewing would continue on OTT platforms, which is great as everyone has an option now.

The digital space won’t eat away from films, but it will be parallel avenue. It will certainly make us pull our socks up and think about the content that we are presenting to the audience

Would you be open to backing original productions for digital platforms in the future as a producer?
At least in Hollywood, most of the great writing is on the web. Apart from some of the Marvel films, most films have failed to perform well this year. Web shows and original productions have fared better. So, writers again have a space where they can spread their wings, and do things out of the box. So, as a producer, I would definitely want to explore digital productions as well.

Gully Boy | Film Review

$
0
0
"Kapde silayle hai khud ke dum pe, nahi liye maine apne baap se," raps Gully Boy aka Ranveer Singh, as the entire theatre breaks into an impromptu round of cheer and applause. It becomes a habit, especially in the second half, where one impressive moment after another leaves you spellbound, whistling and cheering for the lead protagonist and his struggle to the top. This ain't your typical rags to riches story. Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy goes a notch above and strikes a chord with it's realistic depiction of the underground hip hop scene in our very own city of dreams - Mumbai.

Gully Boy showcases Murad Sheikh's (Singh) rise to fame, as he discovers his passion for rapping, while overcoming his personal obstacles and dilemmas. As a budding artist and youngster belonging to a simple household located in the by-lanes of Dharavi, the road ahead isn't easy. In fact, Murad's journey is full of ups and downs. Right from dealing with a stern father, who isn't too keen on the boy following his dream and insists he concentrates on getting a decent job, to dealing with the shortcomings of his friends, who indulge in one illegal activity after another, and observing the silent emotional sufferings of his mother; it's all topsy turvy.

But, Murad finds his calling in the world of hiphop. And of course, some solace in spending time with his loved one - Safeena (Alia Bhatt), a feisty budding surgeon, who wouldn't leave any stone unturned to keep her guy away from the prying eyes of another girl. Even if that means thrashing or breaking glass bottles; Safeena is unapologetically real and bindaas. However, she too has her own set of hurdles to deal with, as she is forced to put on a rather timid face at home, thanks to family norms and values. One things leads to another, and Murad comes across a known underground rapper - MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi), who becomes an integral part of his future journey. Will Murad make it big and realise his dreams? How does he adapt to the world of underground rap and hiphop battles? That's for you to find out!

The screenplay, dialogues, performances, music; don't know where one can begin. There isn't any department where the film fails to impress. In fact, there are parts which end up exceeding expectations and how!! While one wonders if the curse of second half would affect this film, you witness a stronger comeback, which keeps the audience hooked on right till the last frame (all the way till the last credit rolls out). Akhtar and Reema Kagti's writing spells perfection. While keeping the underground hiphop movement as the dominant theme, the film has multiple layers, which brilliantly touch upon pertinent issues - ranging from domestic violence, skewed standards of living, hardships of the common man, and even shades of feminism, which strongly reflects in Bhatt's Safeena. Vijay Maurya pens memorable dialogues, which deservingly received thunderous applause and cheers. Some lines, filmed on Singh, Chaturvedi and even Bhatt, leave a strong impact. Jay Oza's impeccable cinematography captures the essence of Mumbai streets very well. Various artists, including some of the OG 'Gully Boys' who have inspired the film - Divine, Naezy among others, come together to create one memorable soundtrack for the film. Of course, it goes without saying that the music plays a dominant role, and turns out to be an exceptional 'hero' in the film. The songs grow on you once played on loop, with lyrics that pack a punch. Apna Time Aayega, Asli Hip Hop, Mere Gully Mein and Azaadi are hands down some of our favourites.

Performances level up with every scene, as the artists breathe life into their respective characters with absolute perfection. While one expects Singh and Bhatt to be highlighted as the main stars, Akhtar ensures their characters get weaved in naturally, and every cast member shines with their individual performances. This is one aspect that becomes an important trump card for the film. Casting is top notch, as each artist stands out with their respective acts. Vijay Raaz (Aftab Sheikh) and Amruta Subhash (Afreen Sheikh) as Murad's parents are excellent. Debutant Siddhant Chaturvedi deserves a special mention and is supremely impressive. As MC Sher, he becomes the catalyst in Murad's life, thus making his character an integral part of the latter's journey. The actor does complete justice, with the perfect attitude and cool quotient required to play this role. Ditto Vijay Verma, whose portrayal of the smart street boy Moeen, makes a mark. Kalki Koechlin's Sky doesn't have too much screen space, but the actress does a good job with her short yet important role.

Needless to say, it is Bhatt who walks away with maximum 'seeti' (whistle) worthy dialogues. As the doll faced yet spunky Safeena, she wins your heart with the right amount of fire and ice in her personality. Her possessiveness for Murad leads to many a memorable moments, where Bhatt shines with her exceptional act. As Murad's love interest, she goes on to become his biggest support and strength. However, it is Singh who steals the show with a flawless portrayal of 'Gully Boy' aka Murad. He brilliantly presents various shades of an artist's personality within 155 odd minutes, with the perfect personality, body language and expressions. As a dreamer waiting to fly and spread his wings, Singh's Murad depicts the story of every determined youngster, who is waiting to / or has made a mark on their own. It is impossible to imagine Singh - the award winning actor that we know, and instead, one sees him living as and effortlessly breathing life into Murad on screen. The intensity and fire in his eyes speak volumes, and sometimes, create a bigger impact than the dialogues. Shedding his usual infectious energy and enthusiasm, Singh steps into the shoes of a character that demands various moods, ranging from calm to romantic, motivated to exasperated and more. The passion with which Singh has moulded himself to become one with Murad, right from acing his personality and overall look to even rapping songs with complete dedication, is simply impeccable. Who could believe that we saw the same guy dance around on 'Aankh Marey' in a beefed up avatar, just a month ago? Well, that's Ranveer Singh for you, and no one does it like him. Clearly, this Gully Boy steals the show with his flawless act.

Gritty, raw, and remarkably beautiful; captain of the ship - Zoya Akhtar, deserves full credit for perfectly putting together a film, that serves as a great tribute to the hiphop movement, and both the popular, budding artists involved. There isn't a single 'check your phone' or rest room break moment, as the film successfully keeps you hooked on with it's decent pace and overall flow. Kudos to Akhtar, Kagti and the makers for highlighting this subject, penning their magic, bringing it to life on the big screen and getting the heroes of Indian (or if I may say - Asli) Hip Hop to the forefront. As if my words weren't enough, my best friend (who has been waiting to catch this film right since the trailer dropped) quoted this right after the preview - "The film serves as an inspiration to budding rappers, and all those who want to break beyond their ordinary lives. Those Gully vibes leave you with goosebumps all over. Angaaar Hai, Ranveer. Angaar Hai." Well, I couldn't agree more!!

Easily one of the best films in recent times, with performances that will be remembered for a long, long time. Bahut Hard, Gully Boy!! Bahut-ich Hard.

Verdict: This is an experience that cannot be missed! Gully Boy is an absolute must watch for the entire family. Highly recommended.

As winter transcends to spring, the month of February is already upon us (wow! almost a fortnight done). Needless to say, the month is synonymous with the feeling of being love! With blooming flowers, tropical vibes and a tinge of red all around; one can't miss the whiff of love in the air. Promises, roses and moments of mushy-ness. The endless list of date night ideas. Updates and posts that follow. Nothing can match upto the feeling of being in love. Sigh! It's wonderful, isn't it?

But, have you looked at yourself in the mirror, and showered some words of compliments? A subtle, "You look wonderful today," from a special someone creates a flutter in our stomach, doesn't it? How about we tweak things a bit and say this to ourselves, just once in a while? Learning to love yourself and being comfortable in one's skin is the most liberating and beautiful feeling. When no one stands by, you have yourself. When all else fails, you can motivate yourself. No one can love you better, if you fail to love yourself first. So, stop being harsh and learn to love! This valentine's day, give yourself some much needed love. Compliment yourself, and smile. Don't wait for someone else to make a difference! Love thy self fiercely, folks. So much, that when others see you, they know exactly how it should be done.

This one's for the person who makes me smile! You know who you are. Love and light, always ❤️

Here's wishing the entire #DancebeeFam a very Happy Valentine's Day! Hope you had a great time with your loved one, and shall always continue to do so.

Holi Hai! It's that time of the year again. Beautiful colours all around, scrumptious sweets to gorge on, and some quality time with your loved ones. If you ignore the annoying revelry and focus on the cultural aspect of Holi, you will realise that this festival is truly beautiful. Also, it goes way beyond the usual elements - water, bhaang, colours - that the festival has gained popularity for. It marks the arrival of spring, signifies the victory of good over evil and is celebrated as a 'thanksgiving' by the farmers for good harvest. The festival is spread over two days - while the first day is celebrated as Holika Dahan, the second is known as Dhulvandhan. In some parts of the country, celebrations continue all the way up to Rang Panchami (fifth day of the second fortnight in the month of Phalguna).

Well, if you are among those who prefers celebrating the festival with loved ones, without the usual revelry, with just a simple puja, good food and some fun time with music or karaoke (Nope! Not the one with tower speakers), then we've got the perfect filmy addition for you. Over the years, Holi has played an important role in most popular Bollywood films. It is one of Bolly land's most favourite on-screen festival (Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri comes a close second). What's not to love at ace designer Rocky Star's latest venture - a cocktail bar, with a stylish twist. With the perfect classy ambience, tastefully done up decor and an array of scrumptious dishes, drinks on the menu, this is certainly the place to unwind and chill after a long day out. Right from the moment we walked in, the beautiful amalgamation of vintage wood, leather and velvet decor brought about a luxe vibe, which kept our spirits high throughout the evening (and no, we don't even drink).

Who? - Rocky Star Cocktail Bar
Where? - Lower Parel (Kamala Mills)

Situated at the ever so bustling Kamala Mills, the Rocky Star Cocktail Bar specialises in signature cocktail mixes. With the sultry summer upon us, RSCB launched a special menu with special concoctions apt for the season. They were recently in the news for becoming the first ever bar to introduce the most expensive cocktail in India - named no 32, priced at 14,000 INR. Beat that!!

The luxurious ambience, perfect decor and calming chandelier lights will welcome you, and be rest assured, you shall be transported to a different, new world! During our visit earlier this month, we sampled some of the starters on their menu.

The Dijon (Price: Rs 390) - Finger bites, packed with oodles of cheese and an interesting mix of spices, was definitely one of our favourites! Highly recommended.

The Cannes (Price: Rs 390) - Packed with spiced mushrooms and pepper jack cheese; even those who hate mushrooms will fall in love with this variety of cheesy tarts!

The Dubai (Price: Rs 420) - An interesting platter of hummus, pita and garlic sticks, packed with kalamata olives. Yum!!

The Santorini (Price - Rs 440) - Delicious spicy zucchini fritters, which went really well with the feta and lemon dip that accompanied the dish. Another favourite!

Right from the vibe to the food and perfect hospitality; everything at the Rocky Star Cocktail Bar was top notch. We absolutely loved our first experience, and would look forward to visiting the place yet again.

IPL 2019 - Top Players to Watch Out For

$
0
0

Year after year, the Indian Premier League brings with it a bag full of fresh domestic talent. While the T20 league is most cherished and admired for bringing recognition to fresh faces, it is also a platform for some of those 'old war horses' to find favour with the national selectors or extend their careers in T20 leagues. As expected, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 player's auction attracted massive windfall. All eight franchises used the auction to get their squads ready for the upcoming season of the T20 league. Let's take a quick look at our top ten favourite players who look all set to be the game changes. For them, this edition of the IPL might turn out be career-altering or perhaps in some cases, even career-saving.

David Warner
The swashbuckling left-hand batsman from Australia is all set to make a comeback to IPL after not being a part of Orange Army last year in 2018. The 32-year-old is one of the best openers, and his numbers speak for themselves. He has scored 4014 runs from 114 innings in the tournament with an average of 40.55 and a strike rate of 142.14. These are the kind of players who win you tournaments. Certainly, one of our favourite players to watch out for in IPL 2019.

Steve Smith
All charged and geared up for a Royal Return. Rajasthan Royals will be boosted up with the return of Steve Smith, as he proved to be an asset for them before. The 29 year old, right handed middle order batsmen is a member of community "Fab 4" in international cricket. With a strike rate of 130+; he is one of the most dependent players for RR in IPL.

Varun Chakravarty
The man who went for maximum bucks in this season's IPL auction. Varun was picked by Kings XI Punjab for a price of 8.4 Crores INR. Another mystery spinner in this year's season, with the ring already filled up by the likes of Mujeeb Ur Rehman, Sunil Narine, and Rashid Khan. The spinner made his name with strong performances in the Tamil Nadu Premier League, picking up 10 wickets at mere 4.7 RPO. He can be the X-factor for KXIP this season. Let's see if he can live up to the reputation of being the 'Million Dollar Baby'.

Shivam Dube
Everyone was sure that Shivam Dube is bound to gain a considerable amount of attention in this year's IPL auction, and rightly so. Many teams did try to get him on their side. Ultimately, the 25-year-old all rounder was picked by Royal Challengers Bangalore. His all-round abilities can give RCB a much needed boost in the middle order. Right when it mattered the most, just before the IPL auctions, he slammed 5 sixes off 5 balls at a Ranji Trophy face-off, which helped him fetch a price of 5 Crores INR.

Oshane Thomas
Thomas impressed everyone with his raw pace at the Carribean Premiere League this year. He was picked by the Rajasthan Royals for 1.1 Crores INR at the auction. He is someone who can consistently touch the 150 kph mark. He might just turn out to be the trump card that Rajasthan Royals require in their bowling line up, as they do not have anyone who can bowl with such an amazing pace. Speed-o-Meter might be on a roll when this guy is bowling. Definitely a player to look out for!

Suresh Raina
It's hardly possible that you talk about IPL and you don't associate 'MR IPL' with 100% attendance. Suresh Raina may not be around in the international arena as much as we like, but he sure is the perfect person to fit in to our favourite category. The 32-year-old Southpaw has been the backbone of Chennai Super Kings since a long time. He can hit those big shots with ease, and is one of the finest players in this format. Closing in on 5000 IPL runs, he is the one of the leading run getters and surely making a comeback to Indian Squad will be up on his mind, which makes him a player to watch out for.

Rishabh Pant
This young Wicket Keeper - Batsmen is already being considered as the successor of MS Dhoni. He is certainly one of the most entertaining cricketers around, and can hit the ball a big mile. As a team, Delhi Capitals is packed with raw talent and will rely on Pant to continue his golden form, With a blistering strike rate of 160+ and already an IPL 100 under his name in last season, he is certainly another hot favourite!

Virat Kohli
Format doesn't matter when it comes to the Indian Captain. The run machine continues to flow. If T20 cricket is a brand, then certainly Kohli can be termed as the Brand Ambassador. With a wide array of shots and astonishing technique, the quick wrists and foot movement against spinners makes him one of the most dangerous batsmen. Kohli, with a strike rate of 135+, can be the one of the leading run getters in IPL. However, clinching the IPL trophy is still on the wish list for our RCB skipper. Let's see if that works out successfully for Kohli this year.

Jasprit Bumrah
When it comes to the bowling department, Mumbai Indians have plenty of talent to choose from. But, all eyes will once again be on ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah. He is regarded as one of the best pacers in the international arena. Bumrah has been instrumental for the eye catching success of MI in the last few years. He has 63 wickets in 67 IPL matches, and will look to increase that tally this time around. From Bowling those economical spells at the top to bowling some toe cracking Yorkers; he has it all in his armoury.

Rashid Khan
He can be termed as one of the 'Best Teenage Players' around. Afghanistan has a knack of producing world class talents, and Rashid Khan clearly leads the spin trio along with Nabi & Mujeeb for Afghanistan. Plus, he leads the Spin department for the Orange Army as well. Sometimes, it's very hard for batsmen to know what's gonna come up next from his sleeve. With an economy just over 6, he can control the middle overs and take wickets in last overs as well. Make no mistake! This Guy can win you tournaments.

Are you all set to watch IPL 2019 and cheer for your favourite squad? Is your top player on this list?

5 Ways to Flaunt Healthy Skin This Summer

$

0
While ‘Winter’ is surely coming on your television or laptop screens, the scenario outside your window tells a different tale. It’s that time of the year when clear blue skies and the sparkly sunshine screams ‘Summer’. And we all know what that means - heat, dust, pollution and the battle against UVA/UVB rays. While we know the importance of certain elements for good skin care, its necessity hits an all-time peak during this season, when our exposure to sun is higher, thanks to extended weekends, poolside time with friends and beach holidays with the fam.
We can never stress enough on the importance of overall wellbeing for healthy looking skin. And sometimes, these tips are as simple as buying chalk and cheese from a local store. Delve in to this quick read, in order to decode some simple tips which will ensure you flaunt healthy looking skin this summer!

Not without your Sunscreen
Can summer skincare ever be complete without the mention of - Sunscreen? Nah! A broad spectrum sunscreen, that suits your skin type, is a must have in all your bags - be it office, college or beach. While it is necessary to wear sunscreen all year round, it’s an absolute must during the ongoing season, as the harsh UVA/UVB rays can cause major damage to your skin overtime. Pick a sunscreen with more than SPF30+, and if you are on the beach, we recommend you choose SPF50+. Make sure you re-apply the product every two hours.

Vitamin E Magic
Let’s admit it! Vitamin E has been a key ingredient in skincare since a really long time. While the newer, more fancier-sounding ingredients may seem more appealing to a large section of the beauty loving audience, the good ol’ humble Vitamin E continues to be a hot favourite among those, who trust the ingredient for healthy looking skin. One must keep in mind the fact that over time, multiple elements like sun damage, pollution and various other environmental causes end up weakening the skin, depleting its resources and ultimately, results in signs of damage to skin and hair. There are multiple ways in which Vitamin E can be used as a skin and hair nourisher.

From moisturisers, eye creams, serums to night creams and facial masks; a variety of products come loaded with abundant burst of Vitamin E. Chances are that almost every third product in your skincare shelf has the ingredient listed, and you never even knew (well, that’s a sign that you should begin paying attention to the ingredients on your skincare products).

Wah! Water
What’s that one item which we can have non-stop (in most cases, without paying a price), but still choose to ignore its importance? Well, chances are that you don’t drink enough ‘Water’, if you haven’t got that right. We may see a bottle of water around us, and can even travel with one. But, most times, we prefer to let go, because we feel only high-end luxury products are required for soft and supple skin. It’s necessary that you have at least 3-4 litres of water daily, in order to get rid of toxins, and keep yourself hydrated. If you are someone who needs further motivation, create infused water recipes with ingredients like Lemon, Cucumber, Mint among others. Yes, water is precious for a reason! And, it’s high time we appreciate the importance of this element in our lives.

Fruity-licious
Seasonal fruits and vegetables are an absolute blessing! Not only are they delicious (and super yum to gorge on), but they can used up in more ways than one. Ensure you stock up on some delicious seasonal fruits to make salads, juices and even DIY fresh face masks. Plus, since summer anyway makes one feel tired and sluggish, a tall glass of freshly squeezed juice is the perfect refresher. Nothing better than sugar and preservative free stuff on your plate and / or glass!

Em’ Eyes & Lips don’t Lie
We often look at the larger picture, and shrug away when it comes to the smaller things. However, ignoring any body part during summer is a big no-no. So, it’s important that you use a good lip balm (preferably something which includes SPF protection). Further, you can also apply natural ingredients like Shea Butter or invest in a good lip sleeping mask, in order to hydrate your lips overnight. Another area that needs good attention are your ‘Eyes’. Ensure you wear sunglasses, every time you step out during the crucial 12 to 4 pm sun hours. Come back home to some rose (or any good cooling ingredient infused) water soaked cotton pads. Keep them on for 10 mins, and your eyes will surely thank you.

This isn't an exhaustive list, as there are many more tips that can further help your skin stay healthy. However, these are some basic things that we swear by, and we are sure, you will too. Here’s to a super happy summer ahead!!

What are your favourite tips for good skincare in summer?

10 Travel Essentials For Every Girl

$

0
Be it rain, snow or sunshine, none of us can do without at least one long, relaxed and well planned holiday. While some choose to travel solo, others may take off with their friends or family. In between our crazy work schedules and insane lifestyle, all of us can do with some time out. It can be for an adventurous trip, or a sunny day out at the beach! After all, we all swear by the saying that goes - "To travel is to live." Oh yes, indeed!

Every destination needs its own list of must haves. From your tropical swimsuit for a beach day or the perfect pair of boots that you may have kept aside for an afternoon surrounded by snow; we've all got our checklist full! In addition, all of us have got that 'One' important list of essentials, that we can't do without on any trip. Destinations may change, but these essentials clearly don't. Some items are always a must have. Of course, I've got mine too. A few HG products, some essentials here and there, and a few items that turn 'life savers' during a long trip! Here's my list of 10 travel essentials that I can't do without. PS: Don't forget to comment below with your favourites.

Travel Sized Skin Care Kit
Just coz' you are traveling doesn't mean that you skip a routine that you swear by. So, the next time you visit the beauty store, look out for travel sized kits or sample packets  of the products that you use for CTM (cleansing, toning and moisturising). Also, it would be advisable that you carry a moisturiser that contains at least SPF 30 or more. Never leave your home without sunscreen!

Our Pick: Clinique 3-Step Intro / Travel Kit

Hand Sanitiser
Be it a road trip or bird watching, you gotta keep hygiene in mind! Especially around areas that have limited access to wash rooms or hand wash basins. You definitely don't wanna mess around with dirty hands on the dinner table, after a long day out. Hand sanitisers are a saviour, especially when you have to use public restrooms or eat at highway joints.

Our Pick: Himalaya Pure Hands Hand Sanitiser

Refillable Travel Bottles
A moisturiser here, and a body lotion there. All of us have several everyday skin and hair care products that we can't do without. But, it's impossible to carry the full sized products, and most of them may not come in travel sized kits. That's when these tiny bottles come handy. Fill in with your product, and change the refill as per requirement on your next trip! I mostly use these bottles for my body lotion, shampoo and conditioner. It's all about traveling light, baby!

Make Up Kit
While traveling, I prefer using minimal products or choose to go with just the moisturiser and lip balm. It completely depends on my mood. But, I always carry a small make up bag, with some items that I swear by. Always have a good concealer, eye liner and lip balm / tint on you. These products are good enough to spruce up your look even on a dull day. If you've got space for more, add on a brow product and some mascara! Oh, and don't forget to make a statement with some cool make up pouch.

Facial Mist
One of my HG products! I never leave home for a long trip without this. A spritz of this and you feel refreshed, even on a hot, sultry summer afternoon. Perfect for humid summers and even monsoons.

Our Pick: Innisfree Green Tea Mineral Mist

Sunglasses
I usually carry two pairs, or sometimes three (especially during summer). I can do without a hat or my favourite baseball caps, but it is impossible to step out for a trip without a pair of cool sunglasses.

Facial Wipes
These multi-use wipes are super handy. From a make up wipe after a long day to taking off all the dirt and grime on your face, in between a road trip or simply using it to wipe your hands after a meal; facial wet wipes have fast become a must have for every travel bag! Can't do without it.

Our Pick: Kara Make Up Removal Wipes

Toilet Seat Covers
We all know the condition of most public toilets. It becomes extremely difficult to find a proper rest room, especially during a road trip. While driving on the highway, you might end up finding one at a fuel station, but these restrooms do get tricky to use. Having a disposable toilet seat cover helps. Big time! You can also carry a small can of Toilet sanitiser spray for added protection and safety.

Tampons / Sanitary Pad
You are out on a long road trip. Zooming past villages or areas that may have limited access to sanitary hygiene items. And what if it's time for your periods to arrive and say, 'Well, Hello girl! I am back.' Always remember - its important to have a back up and / or a solution ready for everything. Keep your tampon or choice of sanitary pad pack ready with you always. You never know when it might just be 'that time of the month' (additionally, using a tracker app definitely helps to plan and organise things in advance).

Medicine / First Aid Kit
A habit that my Dad always swear by, and insists that I must too. Carrying your own small pouch of first aid / medicine always helps. Not every hotel may have one, and even a chemist may just get difficult to locate. Hence, a few basic items - including band aids, burn / wound cream like soframycin, small pain relief balm / cream / spray, paracetamol and prescribed medicines (if any) are a must.

Bonus: Travel Charger - You definitely can't do without this one! Especially on long drives, trail walks or an entire day at the sanctuary. Basically, any place where you may not have access to a charging point for long. Forget pictures, it's an important item when it comes to any form of emergency (in order order to make a call or send across an SOS).

IPL 2019 | Road to the Playoffs - Top 4 Favourite Teams

$
0
0
The world's biggest T20 Tournament is almost nearing to the end of Knockout Stages and the run to play offs shall begin very soon. The 12th Season of Indian Premier League has not been an easy ride for any of the teams. They had to earn each and every win. It has arguably produced more last ball thrillers than any other season in comparison. At the beginning of the tournament, all teams looked well settled and were deemed worthy for claiming a spot in the playoffs. But, as the tournament progressed, some teams performed better than others, by holding on to game changing moments or rather, building those moments.

Some teams have been driven by individual brilliance, like for instance - the Kolkata Knight Riders, where Andre Russell has single handedly won them some matches. However, no great contributions from others has resulted in KKR sliding towards lower half of the points table, and losing 6 games on a trot. Whereas some teams like Chennai Super Kings have found a new Superhero to rescue the day. All said and done, only 4 teams can make it to the Playoffs. Here's our prediction of the top four, based on current standings and form:

Chennai Super Kings
One simply cannot imagine the Top 4 points table to be complete without CSK on the list. Right since the inception of this tournament, they have always been in the playoffs, which is a big achievement in itself, as many other teams continue to thrive, in order to achieve this feat. Led by the charismatic Mahendra Singh Dhoni, CSK has always found ways to improve their game and individual performances has been key to this team. After all, it's a team game, and each player knows their role as well as requirement for contribution. They have been assigned specific tasks, and each time, it's incredible to see a player rise to the occasion, in order to fulfil his part of the duties. This time, things are no different, as CSK has won 8 out of the 12 games they have played so far. One more win in the remaining fixtures, and they are assured of securing a top 2 finish in the points table.

Delhi Capitals
This can be termed as the best year for the Delhi based franchise. It is rightly said, "Progress is not possible without change." And, the Delhi owners have understood this logic quite well. This year, the owners changed the franchise name, jersey and also upped their game with fresh faces, which in turn has changed their fortunes all over. They have the perfect mixture of young Indian core - Shreyas Iyer,  Rishabh Pant and Prithvi Shaw; all of whom have been at their best this season. The addition of Dhawan at top of the order has been like a cherry on the cake. Foreign recruits like Rabada, Morris have made major impact, with former also being the Purple Cap holder. DC has already qualified for the playoffs, with 8 wins in 12 games. One more win could guarantee them a top 2 finish in the league stages.

Mumbai Indians
Duniyaa Hila Denge Hum has been their anthem, and it seems they have lived up to these words, and that too with a big bang. MI is always known to have a slow start in the initial stage, and then, bounces back in the second half. Well, this time around the trends have changed, as the team has already won 7 out of the 12 matches played so far. Hence, they look set to book a ticket for the playoffs! The batting unit has fired most of the times, and helped chase down massive totals with ease. Each player has played their part very well. The unit looks like a well settled one with Quinton De Cock and Rohit Sharma providing promising starts for the likes of Krunal Pandya, Hardik Pandya and Keiron Pollard to build on and go for those mighty big shots in end overs. Jasprit Bumrah has done what he does best. Malinga, Rahul Chahar, Alzarri Joseph among others have played their part with the ball as well. Their only worry will be the form of their Captain - Sharma, who has blown hot and cold in the season so far, But as they say - Big players rise to the occasion. So, we look forward to seeing a twist in Hitman's form as well.

Sunrisers Hyderabad
The Hyderabad based franchise has faced a rather tricky road this season. Winning and losing 6 games each, they stand on the 4th place currently in the points table. They have banked heavily on their openers - David Warner and Jonny Bairstow, who have accounted for 50% of the overall runs scored by SRH this year. The Warner -  Bairstow partnership has hardly failed, thus giving their middle order less exposure, which may be the only cause of worry for SRH. However, with the return of Manish Pandey, things look a bit sorted, as he has impressed with some good consistency and form. Bowling has never been a caution area for SRH with Rashid Khan, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Khalel Ahmed doing major damage to the opposition. They are well supported by Mohammad Nabi, Sandeep Sharma, and Siddhart Kaul. Since KKR, KXIP and KKR need to win all their remaining matches, in order to make an impact and finish in the top 4, it looks like SRH has a decent edge over them.

What are your thoughts on the ongoing IPL season? Which team are your supporting?

When it comes to red carpet appearances at the Cannes Film Festival, there ain't no one stopping Sonam Kapoor Ahuja. The actress made an impact with some remarkable looks at the Cannes red carpet this year. She continues to make us proud with her incredible sartorial choices (with sister and stylist Rhea Kapoor putting together the perfect looks), which go on to create a strong buzz in the international media as well. This year too, we witnessed how Sonam made a stylish splash at the French Riviera with some breathtakingly beautiful looks. We can't get over how stunning she looked in almost all her outfits. Right from the make up to accessories and her hair, we couldn't stop raving about it all. We gotta give it to Sonam for raising the bar at Cannes (and almost every other red carpet event). Here's a round up of all the looks sported by our favourite fashionista, as she attended multiple events and sashayed down the red carpet for Chopard at Cannes 2019!

Day I

Look 1
Outfit: Maison Valentino

Look 2 (Press Day)
Outfit: Elie Saab
Jewellery: Chopard

Look 3 (Chopard Night Party)
Outfit: Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla

Day II

Look 1 (Chopard Launch Event)
Outfit: Custom Ashi Studio Couture
Jewellery: Chopard

Look 2 (Red Carpet)
Outfit: Ralph & Russo Couture Tuxedo
Jewellery: Chopard

The #DancebeeFashion Pick: Sonam Kapoor Ahuja in a powerful tuxedo, painting the red carpet with massive boss babe vibes? Yes, please! The actress reserved her best look for the last appearance at Cannes 2019, as she ditched the good ol' gown and stepped out looking like a goddamn boss in a custom Ralph & Russo tuxedo. Of course, the detailing won our hearts, as the overskirt attached to the jacket oozed drama and charm all over. Statement jewellery upped the glam quotient, as the actress picked a stunning diamond and 155 carat Columbian emerald encrusted necklace to go with the look, paired with drop down earrings (both by Chopard). We absolutely loved how she made a statement with glossy nude lips and bold eyes - complete with lots of kohl, eyeliner, and layers of mascara. In the hair department, she kept the look sleek with a tight bun. A pair of white pointed-toe heels by Jimmy Choo completed this picture perfect look. Hands down our favourite look sported by the pretty actress. Truly, a class apart!

Kudos to the Kapoor sisters - Sonam and Rhea, for dishing out such impeccable looks, and forever changing the way we look at fashion.
What are your favourite looks on Sonam Kapoor this year?

5 Reasons to Stay at Acron Waterfront Resort during your next Getaway in Goa | Dancebee Travels

To travel and unwind is to let your soul run free. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city life, we took sometime out for a quick getaway to the land of sunshine, serenity and sand - Goa. And what better than planning your stay at a property, that offers the best of all that and a lot more? We knew it couldn't get better than choosing one of the best properties in North Goa - the Acron Waterfront Resort - which offers a breathtaking view of the Baga river, and further, the ever buzzing Baga Beach. We spent four days, lazing around at this beautiful property (more on that in our next post). Needless to say, we have got enough reasons to prove why this stunning boutique resort needs to be on top of your list during the next Goan getaway.

Spacious, Comfortable Rooms
Tiny rooms with minimum space for movement? A big no for any relaxing holiday, especially those with friends and / or family. We all look forward to spending quality time with our loved ones, while chit-chatting, playing board games or just enjoying a discussion post late night dinner. And if your property offers a spacious room, along with lots of space to sit, move around and literally - feel just like home, then you know you've made the right choice. Our stay at Acron Waterfront Resort felt just like that! Each of the 47 rooms (including the newly added suites) were incredibly spacious and offered breathtaking views from the private balcony. Complete with modern amenities and plenty of space; we fell in love with our Seaside Room, the moment we walked in!

Sense of Tranquility
Every individual has their own reasons to pick a specific property during their stay. What if I told you this boutique resort has something to cater to everyone; while maintaining one integral USP - Tranquility - all around the property. Many people love their bit of fun and madness, but there are many (like me), who like to unwind at peace. We all look forward to some calm moments, especially since we live supremely hectic lifestyles. Lazy early morning walks, amidst the calm environment of the courtyard, was an absolute favourite! Despite being nestled in the middle of a bustling beach area, one can experience pure calmness and bliss.

The River Restaurant
The perfect way to end a long day of touristy views - a quiet candle lit dinner by the riverside. And of course, how can anyone resist kickstarting their day with a powerful breakfast, and that view? The River Restaurant is their in-house dining space. It offers a delicious breakfast spread and all day dining for non-staying guests as well. While the restaurant is well known for dishing out some unique fusion of Goan delicacies, we also liked their spin on simple, everyday breakfast items. The breakkie spread was delish, to say the least! Our favourite pick - Puri Bhaji. The item can be ordered during breakfast hours, and trust me - the crispy, piping hot puris and scrumptious bhaji (we sampled tomato-potato and chole on different days) was simply yum! Oh, and we also got the chance to cook up some delicious Goan lunch favourites, thanks to a masterclass by Chef George (which can be arranged at the restaurant for you as well). More on that very soon on our Instagram.

Infinity Pool
Easily my favourite part of any holiday property! And, I personally think Acron Waterfront Resort has hit it out of the park with the perfect infinity pool view. The scenic Baga river flows gently, and makes for a peaceful backdrop, as you relax and soak in some sunshine. You can literally get a panoramic view of Baga - right from the bridge, river to the glimpses of Arabian sea, while you take a dip, swim or just calmly enjoy the view, while resting on the pool loungers. Need a break to quench your thirst on a hot summer day? The pool bar has got you covered. Needless to say, there is no better way to beat the heat in Summer - when the temperatures hit 40 degrees - than enjoying a Virgin Mojito and relaxing by the poolside, on a lazy weekday evening. Our favourite moment has got to be enjoying the sunset, while being the pool! Truly, an incredible experience.

Unmatched Views
Baga Beach on one side, buzzing Baga Bridge on the other and of course, a breathtaking view of the Baga River - right in front of your property. We spent several hours taking in the natural light and views from our sea side room, which had the perfect view of the river meets Arabian sea confluence. Waking up to soft breeze, the sound of waves and birds chirping all around; while enjoying a morning cuppa in our spacious balcony, became a daily ritual, that we just couldn't get enough of. Of course, visiting the property during monsoon and winter has it's own perks (read: spending time by the poolside on chilly winter evenings with bae or enjoying some rain dance with your family in the open courtyard of the property - pick your favourite).

Bonus: Hospitality - A special mention of the excellent hospitality and service by the incredible staff. They were prompt and extremely helpful. Right from the housekeeping to dining and management; every member was warm, welcoming and extremely courteous. This is one of the most important factors for most families, couples and even groups during their long stay at a property. And well, Acron Waterfront Resort has scored full marks in this department, and too, with flying colours!

Well, we have given you enough reasons to book your next stay in North Goa at the Acron Waterfront Resort. They have got some exciting offers all year long, so don't forget to keep an eye out on their official website! And, do stay tuned for some more interesting stories related to our recent stay.
Coming Soon!
