7 Must Read Books For Every Girl Boss

First of all, sorry for being MIA. I was traveling all of last week with little or no network (with the exception of hotel wi-fi, which was mainly used for regular social media updates). However, it's good to be back with many more new stories. And what better than talking about books, eh? Bibliophiles are often heard saying, "So many books, so little time." That's true, because the number of books that topped my list since the beginning of this year is nowhere close to the actual number I have finished reading (I am still trying, alright). There is so much to learn from every book out there. Titles from various genres can teach you anything, from understanding relationships to food and even nature.

However, off late, I am veering towards a lot of biographies and business books. The market is filled with way too many books by successful business personalities. Be it a tale of rag to riches or simply a basic understanding of their business model, it's tough to choose. Luckily, I came across some titles that were packed with the right blend of knowledge, relatable experiences, anecdotes and examples that helped me in my everyday hustle. I was hooked on, and now, I am hoping some of you bibliophiles out there, who have been looking for similar books, get addicted too.

If you are honest, what you want will come your way - Katrina Kaif | Exclusive Interview

After making the world dance to her tunes on Kaala Chashma (and slaying those moves), Katrina Kaif is back, albeit in a never before seen avatar. After a four year long wait, Jagga Jasoos is finally ready for release and needless to say, Kat has left us impressed with her cute and goofy expressions in the promos. She plays the clumsy beauty Shruti, who takes off on an adventure with Jagga aka Ranbir Kapoor, with whom she will be seen sharing screen space after a good seven years.

Though her last film - Baar Baar Dekho, failed to create waves at the BO, the gorgeous actress has been in the news throughout the year. While some may choose to focus on how she has been promoting the film with Mr Kapoor, and others may highlight the mansplaining episode; we can't help but laud the fact that the stunner has bagged some prestigious projects that will roll out in the coming year. From a VFX packed movie with SRK to a period film with Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan, Katrina is ready to rule and clearly, there is no stopping her. A gloomy weekend packed with back to back interviews and never ending promotional activities did not deter the actress from being her happy, chirpy best. Here's Katrina Kaif in conversation with Team Dancebee on topics ranging from Jagga Jasoos, upcoming films to life and fourteen years in the industry.

Tell us a little bit about Shruti, aka the Jughead.
My character is that of an investigative journalist in the film. Of course, the film revolves around a boy – Jagga, who is in search of his father. It is a musical adventure. During his quest, Jagga meets Shruti and they join hands to get on to the journey with a unified purpose.

Well, have you ever got the chance to investigate something?
I am just about able to handle my own life (laughs). I rarely have time to investigate others.  I wish I had more time or nature to do that, but in the 24 hours I have in the day, I take care of  my own things. If someone is investigating about my life, it would be weird, but I don't think any one does that.  Jagga Jasoos revolves around a murder mystery. The protagonist is discovering something big and not poking his nose into other people's lives (smiles).

I am just about able to handle my own life. I rarely have time to investigate others

How will you define Anurag Basu's style of direction?
Every character is different. Dada (Basu) looks for realism and wants the audience to relate to his actors and not see them as entertainers. He wants the viewers to see them as people and connect from the heart. Dada wants to see imperfections in his characters. That's why, you will notice that he has given Jagga the habit of stammering, while Shruti is an accident prone person.

As a co-star, what is your biggest takeaway after working on a film with Ranbir Kapoor?
Ranbir is always searching something to give to his role. He is focussed all the time. That ability to cut everything out and focus and give hundred percent in every shot is a unique skill.

Dada (Basu) looks for realism and wants the audience to relate to his actors and not see them as entertainers. He wants the viewers to see them as people and connect from the heart

As an artist, is there any pressure, since your last film did not work at the BO?
This is my job. If I take the responsibility of the outcome of every film, I won't be able to survive the pressure. As it is, we are carrying so much stress. There are so many things that goes into making a film successful.

How do you deal with the lows in your life?
That's the point when you learn the most. It teaches you how to be more balanced, how to see the world through a larger perspective and not through the eyes of the film industry. There's is so much to learn in the world. It makes you aware of the surroundings and other people around you, rather than just your world of films.

Ranbir's ability to cut everything out, focus and give hundred percent in every shot is a unique skill

You have got an interesting line up of films coming up. Tell us a little bit about the ongoing projects.
I will resume shoot on Tiger Zinda Hai next week at the same location where we shot the last film (Ek Tha Tiger). Since the audience really liked Salman's character and Kabir Khan's direction in the first film, there is a lot of pressure on Ali ( Abbas Zafar - director). However, Ali has not taken anything for granted. He has new visions, dynamics and some really cool action sequences. He released one or two pictures which increased some anticipation. But, the canvas is very large and we are very passionate about the film. Then, I have Anand L Rai's film with Shah Rukh Khan and Thugs Of Hindusthan with Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan (she shot for a few portions of the film in Malta, between JJ promotions). I am extremely excited about all of my upcoming films (smiles).

Celebrities often take to social media platforms for expressing their concern or commenting on an issue. What is your take on this trend?
I believe in freedom of speech. Everyone should speak out what they believe in and share their experiences. Preferably without harming some other person. Everyone is different. and they probably speak because they are giving solace to other people. It has to be a calling that comes through your heart. I can probably spend time and mean every word I say, but you have to have the connection and be sure of the message you are trying to convey. Conveying a message that gives solidarity to other people is a wonderful thing.

In Tiger Zinda Hai, Ali (Abbas Zafar) has not taken anything for granted. He has new visions, dynamics and some really cool action sequences

I learned that even in the hard times, you have to keep your calm and know that this too shall pass

Have you ever had a fear of competition?
There is nothing to fear after being here for so many years. Every day is a gift and a blessing.  If you are honest, what you want will come your way.

Come September, and you will complete 14 years in the industry. How do you look back at your journey so far?
There are so many things. Every day you discover something new. You go through ups and downs. Last year, I learned that even in the hard times, you have to keep your calm and know that this too shall pass. The rest of life you should not be taken seriously. As human beings, we put ourselves through too much of torture. So, just remain positive.

Jagga Jasoos | Film Review

Imagine walking into a theatre, settling down in your comfy seat, and watching a flawless painting come alive. Every detail so unique and fresh, that it's impossible for you to take your eyes off the masterpiece. Well, that's the perfect way to describe Disney's Jagga Jasoos - a musical adventure that will leave you spellbound.

At heart, Jagga Jasoos is a musical thriller, which has Jagga (Ranbir Kapoor), a young boy who breaks into a song every time he has something to say, as the lead protagonist. Enter Shruti (Katrina Kaif), a clumsy investigative journalist, who joins Jagga on his adventure to hunt for his foster father - Badal Bagchi. Apart from the two, the film also has an interesting line up of supporting cast, which includes Saurabh Shukla, Sayani Gupta, Saswata Chatterjee (remember Bob Biswas from Kahaani?) among others.

Every detail so unique and fresh, that it's impossible for you to take your eyes off this masterpiece. Well, that's the perfect way to describe Disney's Jagga Jasoos - a musical adventure that will leave you spellbound

What makes a musical complete? Good music, duh! Luckily for us, composer Pritam has done a fine job. His compositions are melodious and easy on the ear. The soundtrack, which has approximately 24-25 songs, comes as a breath of fresh air among the crowd of remixes and recreations that we get to hear these days.

Of course, one of the film's biggest hero is Ravi Varman, whose outstanding cinematography creates magic, as we explore scenic parts of Morocco, Thailand and the gorgeous north eastern parts of India through his perfect frames. Cinematography is certainly one of the key highlights of this film, which makes it visually stunning. The BG score is perfect, while the editing is crisp. There are not too many hiccups, and the film flows quite smoothly. While we won't give away too many details (as we want you to watch and experience it), we quite liked how the film unfolded in the form of chapters, adding on to the fantasy factor. The climax is the one to watch out for, as it leaves clues for a possible sequel (is it happening already, RK?)

Katrina Kaif's Shruti is the perfect companion Jagga could have asked for. She looks adorable and effortlessly blends into her character, providing some humorous moments. It's great to see Kat ditching her otherwise hot and beautiful avatar for something so simple yet effective. Rest of the cast, especially Shukla, provides the perfect support, adding on to the exciting journey with their performances. Reserving the best for last - this is undoubtedly Ranbir Kapoor's film all the way. RK's Jagga has the perfect blend of masti, mischief, mystery, fun and emotions. The actor delivers a top notch performance with his flawless portrayal of the character. There is a reason why Ranbir is called one of the finest actors of our generation, and once again, he proves it with a stellar act. RK is a pure delight to watch on screen, as he sings, dances (and stammers) his way into your heart.

We all know how the film took four long years to hit the screens. But, let's not forget that a film of this scale does require good amount of time and efforts. Musical as a genre hasn't been explored enough in Bollywood and in a way, Jagga Jasoos is one of the few films that presents it wonderfully. However, one can't deny the fact that it may not be everybody's cup of tea. The film targets a niche audience, which enjoys regular bursts of music and / or experimental storytelling. For us, that's what worked! The narrative and overall presentation is a breakaway from what we usually get to see in Bollywood.

Like some folks often say - Good things take time. The result? A beautiful fantasy tale that was waiting to be told. And I personally think no one other than Anurag Basu could have pulled this off so well. This is the perfect 'Made in India' Disney film, packed with moments that will leave your heart feeling happy and content.

Verdict: Join the ride and take off on a never before seen (at least in Bollywood) adventure. Take your family and friends out to watch this beautiful poetry in motion. A must watch, especially for it's brilliant presentation and excellent performances.

I have seen failure and success very closely - Ranbir Kapoor | Exclusive Interview

His long awaited dream project - Jagga Jasoos, finally released last week. While certain sections of the audience and film critics had mixed views, several families, industry veterans, critics and young fans of the actor appreciated the beautiful film and all the hard work that has gone behind creating it. And honestly, we couldn't stop praising the actor enough. After all, only a gifted actor of his calibre could do justice to a character like Jagga, and wholeheartedly believe a film maker's vision, despite the hurdles and hiccups. There is no doubt that he is one of the most fantastic, versatile actors in the Hindi Film industry today. And from here, Ranbir Kapoor is all set and raring to go far, far ahead.

Never the one to shy away from experimenting with his characters or looks, RK is currently sporting a muscular, beefed up avatar for his portrayal of Sanjay Dutt on the big screen. With a challenging biopic up for release next year and a dream fantasy project alongside Amitabh Bachchan in his kitty, the talented actor clearly has his hands full. In an exclusive chat, Ranbir Kapoor discusses a variety of things - ranging from upcoming films, being a producer, challenges of working on a biopic and more.

Since Jagga Jasoos took a lot of time to develop, as a producer, did the process get a little frustrating? Were you impatient?
Yes, there were times when I was frustrated. I even had a word with Dada (Anurag Basu) and asked if we should shelve the film or go ahead. We could have lost all our money if the film got shelved, but we went ahead with his conviction and passion. Jagga Jasoos is a film made for children and it's a family entertainer. We wanted people to go to the theatre and enjoy it. Before the release, when I personally saw the entire film, I was happy and content with the end result.

I belong to a film family. I have seen failure and success very closely. Failure teaches you a lot

What was the experience of becoming a producer like?
Since childhood, I have always been a fan of films. I love entertaining movies. When Dada (Basu) narrated the story, I immediately liked it and thought of producing it with Dada. I was working as a strainer between Dada and Disney, as both of them used to vent out their frustration through me (smiles). The film had a long wait of 3.5 years and then, there were various reports of Katrina and my break up. People even started saying that we have made changes in the film due to that. Honestly, producing a film is very tough.

You saw some ups and downs, before hitting the bulls eye with Ae Dil Hai Mushkil last year.  What was your thought process like, especially during that tough phase?
When your film is doing well, you are actually happy, only until your next film is up for release. I belong to a film family. I have seen failure and success very closely. Failure teaches you a lot. However, I have never suffered any kind of frustration due to it.

The fact that a relationship does not work out is never in our hands. But with Katrina, I have this incredible partnership which will always stay with me

You have always had a good equation with your co-stars. What was it like with Katrina Kaif, especially during the making and promotions of Jagga Jasoos?
I think after my parents, I have learnt the most from Katrina. We have been friends for 10 years now, and I would always want her to be in my life. When we broke up, there were stories that we don't see each other and were not on talking terms. But, this was completely baseless and untrue. Katrina is a wonderful co-star. She is someone who always wants her co-star to shine. She is very focused and hardworking.  Also, the fact that a relationship does not work out is never in our hands. Some work out well, some don't. However, with Katrina, I have this incredible partnership which will always stay with me.

Your next is a biopic on actor Sanjay Dutt. How has the experience of working on this film been for you so far?
This film is definitely not made to glorify Sanjay Dutt. Director Rajkumar Hirani was very sure about this one thing right from the beginning. We will show the good and bad aspects of his life, and then, the audience will get to see how one can emerge as a winner during difficult times as well. When I heard the full narration of Dutt, I was surprised as to how can one go through all this. He dealt with drugs and then, before his first film - Rocky's premiere, his mother passed away. A few years later, his first wife passed away. Later on, he was charged under the arms act. He has seen a lot in his journey so far. It is difficult to share everything about your life with the public. Frankly, I would never ever do that with my life story.

He (Sanjay Dutt) has seen a lot in his journey so far. It is difficult to share everything about your life with the public. Frankly, I would never ever do that with my life story

What was it like meeting Sanjay Dutt, especially as the actor bringing his journey to life on the big screen?
Actually, I have known him since my childhood. He is a very good human being and always showers his love on me. During some of our previous schedules for the film, there were many times when he was on the set and honestly, I was very embarrassed and nervous. It was an awkward situation for me, where I was acting in front of a legend and he was watching me on the monitor. Later, I told Raju sir (Hirani) that it was embarrassing for me, as even during the take, I used to watch him constantly (smiles).

I have got immense love and support from my fans, the audience and media. Honestly, that's a huge encouragement for me

Over the years, you have earned a huge fan following across the globe, especially among the youth. What do you have in store for them next?
I am blessed! Right from my debut film Sawaariya to now - Jagga Jasoos, I have got immense love and support from both my fans, the audience and media. Honestly, thats' a huge encouragement for me. So, I have got the Dutt biopic coming up next, for which I am currently shooting. Then, I will working on Ayan Mukerji's tentatively titled film - Dragon, along with Alia Bhatt and Amitabh Bachchan. Ayan has a huge plan for this project, as he wants to make three parts of this film in the next ten years (smiles).

Jab Harry Met Sejal | Film Review

$

The magic in his eyes will transport you to another world. His emotions will leave you teary eyed and melt your heart. Well, there is a reason why Shah Rukh Khan is the undisputed king of romance. He charms the audience, aged 6 to 60, with his splendid performances. With 'Jab Harry Met Sejal', the actor (who is currently celebrating his 25th year in the Hindi Film Industry) is at it yet again. And this time, he is out to charm you in a tale, where two lost souls find each other on a journey across countries.

Harry aka Harinder Singh Nehra (Shah Rukh Khan) is a tour guide in Europe, who left his home in Punjab at an early age and decided to settle down saat samandar paar. He is a well known casanova. Though outwardly he may appear all 'happy go lucky' and cool, but he is secretly seeking something else. Clearly, the guy is lonely, lost and directionless. For someone who is in & out of relationships and isn't steady with jobs, the character inwardly wants to escape his mundane lifestyle. Enter Sejal (Anushka Sharma), a talkative yet slightly confused Gujarati girl, who is on a quest of her own. Sejal comes from a restricted background, where she behaves and / or acts a certain way. During the Euro trip with her family, she loses her engagement ring and later, forces Harry (their guide) to join her on a search for the precious heirloom. What follows is a beautiful journey, that not only involves the mission to hunt a missing ring, but also explores self discovery and love.

What follows is a beautiful journey, that not only involves the mission to hunt a missing ring, but also explores self discovery and love

An Imtiaz Ali film is incomplete without serene locations, good music and of course, the challenges of discovering oneself. Jab Harry Met Sejal has the perfect melange of them all, with the addition of some flawless performances. Harry & Sejal's quest takes you across Europe; from Amsterdam to Prague and Budapest. The picturesque locations stand out on their own as a strong highlight. K.U Mohanan's cinematography is top notch and does complete justice to the lovely locations. While the story is simple, it has a few twists that will keep you hooked. Key moments in the film are laced with a good mix of wit, romance, drama and emotions. Be it the poignant moment where the duo break down at a local bar, yet shy away from expressing themselves (one of the best scenes, where both Khan and Sharma emote beautifully), the humorous exchange of words between Harry and a don (Chandan Roy Sanyal in a brilliant cameo) or the heartwarming scene where Harry walks down the steps, embraces Sejal (SRK in his signature style) and breaks into a melodious song, while pretending to be her fiancé; JHMS has some poetic scenes that will stay with you for long.

The picturesque locations stand out on their own as a strong highlight

The soundtrack composed by Pritam compliments this journey very well. It's good to hear some fresh, melodious (and original) tracks after a really long time. All the songs have been shot very well and I like the fact that there is a reason behind the addition of Punjab lyrics in the film. If you like the JHMS album, then you are sure to fall in love with it after watching the film. Especially the film version of Arijit Singh's Hawayein. Dialogues are pretty good, and Khan adds an extra touch with his Punjabi one liners. BG score keeps up with the theme and adds good pace. Captain of the ship, Imtiaz Ali does a decent job with the overall presentation of this light hearted, breezy romantic sojourn. While the film scores well in most departments, our only concern is that the second half felt a tad bit too stretched and could have been shorter by at least 10 mins. However, the overall film has a decent flow and will keep you entertained right till the end credits roll out.

The soundtrack composed by Pritam compliments this journey very well. It's good to hear some fresh, melodious (and original) tracks after a really long time

The film primarily focuses on the lead protagonists, and has very few supporting characters. However, the ones who feature do a fine job. The lead pair and their crackling chemistry is the real soul of this film. Anushka Sharma's Sejal is adorable. As the girl on a discovery of her own, Sharma effortlessly gets into the skin of her character and makes us believe that she is indeed the effervescent Sejal. Needless to say, Shah Rukh Khan dominates with his flawless portrayal of Harry. He breathes life into the character with his impeccable dialogue delivery, personality, nuances, wit and tone. It is equally or perhaps, more difficult to portray a raw and real character, who is struggling against his inner demons. But, the ease with which Khan wonderfully brings out Harry's complexities and becomes one with the character is simply incredible!  There are heartwarming moments where Khan only emotes with his eyes. These little details and aspects of his act make him what he is - a superstar. This is a superior performance and no one apart from King Khan could have done justice to the character.

Shah Rukh Khan dominates with his flawless portrayal of Harry. He breathes life into the character with his impeccable dialogue delivery, personality, nuances, wit and tone

Jab Harry Met Sejal is a simple yet mesmerising tale, that unfolds like pure magic on the big screen. It will leave your heart feeling all warm and fuzzy. The brilliant performances and fine music are sure to leave you spellbound. Go out there and show some love to Harry & Sejal!

Verdict: An entertaining fare that certainly deserves a watch, especially for it's fabulous performances and the magic that is - Shah Rukh Khan.

There are times when 'experiencing' a film may require watching it twice. I usually prefer watching some films at a multiplex and then, at a single screen (preferably one show with the family. Their reactions are always real and priceless). However, with just a few single screen cinemas remaining, it is not always possible to get tickets, as they sell out faster than a hot & crispy vada pav. But, as luck would have it, I got my tickets well in advance this time. Needless to say, my decision to watch this week's much anticipated release - Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, with the 'super cinephiles' of single screen cinema, was a terrific one. Watching the film amidst constant 'seetis', cheers and applause for Akshay Kumar's strong stand against open defecation, made for quite an experience. Something that a real cinephile at heart will always enjoy. That, apart from the joy of watching of a well made, entertaining film, where even the audience was happy to wait back right till the end of credits (a rare scene in today's times).

Shree Narayan Singh's second directorial venture focuses on an important issue, that of open defecation and the non-availability of toilets in most households. The lead protagonist - Keshav (Kumar) is a middle aged guy, who lives in a village called Mandgaon. Despite repeated attempts (and affairs), Keshav is unable to get married, thanks to a few compulsions set by his orthodox father (Sudhir Pandey - brilliant as always). First, Keshav must tie the knot with a cow to get rid of his dosha, and next, hunt for a girl who has two thumbs (insert regular 'Hrithik Roshan' puns). While on the hunt, he meets and falls in love with a feisty, educated young girl - Jaya (Pednekar). Some initial hurdles (and a few 'jugaads' later), the two get married. However, things go haywire the very next day, as Jaya finds out that her 'sasural' does not have a toilet, and Babuji isn't too keen on building one either. That's where the struggle begins, as Keshav and Jaya fight against all odds (including superstitions) for their right to basic sanitation.

Watching the film amidst constant 'seetis', cheers and applause for Akshay Kumar's strong stand against open defecation, made for quite an experience

TEPK is real, raw and supremely entertaining. While the basic premise is a social issue (and also centres around PM Modi's Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan), there is not a single moment where the film loses out on the entertainment factor. It wonderfully blends the two aspects together, and delivers a strong message, without being too preachy. Though, one may find a few hiccups during the second half, they don't really appear as flaws. The high points, especially performances and superb writing, pretty much covers up for everything else.

While the music is average, it fits in to the narrative pretty well. 'Gori Tu Lath Maar' has been shot beautifully. Surinder Sodhi's background score is decent. Siddharth - Garima's writing is deft, and is certainly one of the biggest highlight of this film. Dialogues are superb, most of which even earn whistles and cheers. It has a great melange of humour, romance and drama, and a sprinkle of culture, thanks to sanskrit shlokas. Singh's direction is slick, and it is impossible to ignore the detailing that has gone behind even the most simple aspects. For e.g: Keshav's street-side fashion dupes that range from Naik (Nike) to Uima (Puma) or the fake Ray-Ban. Each and every detail has been designed or incorporated keeping the surroundings in mind, which is laudable.

Dialogues are superb, most of which even earn whistles and cheers. It has a great melange of humour, romance and drama

The lead pair and ensemble cast are the real heart of this social - drama. Casting is fantastic, with artists like Divyendu, Sudhir Pandey, Anupam Kher among others adding life to their respective characters with a flawless act. Divyendu has an impeccable comic timing, and the audience erupts in laughter, every time he comes on screen. Pandey as the strict and orthodox Babuji is brilliant.

Despite the film being her second outing, Bhumi Pednekar shines with an outstanding act. With the perfect body language, nuances and fabulous dialogue delivery, she breathes life into Jaya. She does not make the character look caricaturish. Jaya is relatable and real. Pednekar 's natural act (and look) is one of the strongest highlights in the film. It is impossible for anyone to believe that the actress is just one film old. There are portions where she outshines all the veterans around her. That's the mark of a talented artist, and with this flawless performance, Pednekar has proved that she is here to stay.

Bhumi Pednekar 's natural act is one of the strongest highlights in the film. It is impossible for anyone to believe that the actress is just one film old

Akshay Kumar is one of the very few actors who has managed to excel in different genres and has shown excellent range in all his films. There is no doubt that the actor is incredibly versatile. Film after film, he has raised the bar and taken things a notch above with his brilliant performance and vision. TEPK is no different. Kumar's portrayal of Keshav creates a strong impact. He starts off as a regular, confused local guy (with some serious stalking skills), but as the film progresses, the character grows into someone on a mission. Keshav's boy to man journey has been flawlessly essayed by Kumar. His chemistry with Pednekar's Jaya is fabulous, which is another strong highlight of the film.

Akshay Kumar is one of the very few actors who has managed to excel in different genres and has shown excellent range in all his films

Singh's Toilet: Ek Prem Katha is an important film of our times. It explores a love story, against the backdrop of several dark issues that the people of our country continue to suffer from. While focusing on open defecation as the larger picture, the film also touches upon other key issues, including superstition, societal pressure and narrow mindedness of the society. During Jaya's struggle against open defecation, she comes across women who pooh-pooh her decisions. Some even go on to question her education and state that women should not be given to much 'freedom'. It is commendable that Singh has highlighted the various evils that continue to poison our society, in a film that provides wholesome entertainment. It is difficult to find this perfect combination in a good film. Fortunately, TEPK has passed this litmus test with flying colours.

Verdict: A must watch for one and all! Highly recommended for it's flawless performances, excellent writing and the strong message, that creates an impact. Radhe Radhe!!

Revisiting - Haqeeqat (1964) | Independence Day Special

"Saans thamti gayi, nabz jamti gayi. Phir bhi badhte kadam ko na rukne diya.
Kat gaye sar hamare to kuch gham nahi. Sar himalay ka humne na jhukne diya..."

It’s been 54 years since these haunting lines were penned by Late Kaifi Azmi. Mohd Rafi’s golden voice, and the perfect composition by Madan Mohan took it a notch higher. Today, decades after the release, the song - Kar Chale Hum Fida, continues to melt a million hearts across the nation. Any patriotic event in the country is incomplete without a rendition of the track (or best, playing the original). And the film that gave us this song is undisputedly one of the best war films to be made in India.

Haqeeqat is one of the first war films to be ever made in India. But, what's surprising is the fact that even after all these years, while we have books, journals, articles and testimonials based on the devastating war, Haqeeqat is the only Hindi film that focuses on the destructive Sino-Indian war of 1962, where more than 1300 army men lost their lives (the only other film being Ratha Thilagam (Tamil), which was set against the backdrop of the 62' war).

Starring Balraj Sahni, Dharmendra, Vijay Anand, Priya Rajvansh, Sanjay Khan among others; film maker Chetan Anand’s Haqeeqat is set in the times of Sino-Indian war (1962). With timely government assistance, the film came out two years after the war - i.e 1964. The film is a heroic yet poignant tale set against the backdrop of the catastrophic war, and focuses on the heroic resistance of the Indian soldiers against the invading Chinese troops. Shot and set in Ladakh, the main plot focuses on a group of Indian soldiers in the region, who are considered dead, but are actually rescued by tribesmen and Capt Bahadur Singh (Dharmendra). When the Chinese surround them, the soldiers are asked to retreat. However, things take turn for the worse, with retreating soldiers being outnumbered one after another, and what follows next is for you to watch and experience. The film is sure to leave you numb and speechless.

Trivia Reference Credit: House Full - The Golden Age of Hindi Cinema by Ziya Us Salam // 100 Bollywood Films by Rachel Dwyer

However, there are other aspects of life in the time of war that are also wonderfully woven into the screenplay. While focusing on the battleground and the valour of our heroes, the film also highlights the mental trauma and loneliness of the men in armed forces. It also explores a love story that blossoms between the Ladakhi soldier Capt Bahadur Singh and Kammo (Rajvansh), a young Kashmiri girl.

While the film was majorly shot in Ladakh, Anand preferred to re-shoot a few shots. For this, a set with the Himalayas in background was built at a Mumbai studio. MS Sathyu brought the landscape to life, and his brilliance even earned him a Filmfare Award for Best Art Direction. Sadanand Sengupta's excellent cinematography played a key role in capturing the human nuances and large scale war sequences. Most cinephiles would agree that the film would be incomplete without the beautiful lyrics penned by Azmi and Madan Mohan's fine compositions. And of course, Haqeeqat stands out for it's perfect ensemble cast, and memorable performances by Sahni, Dharmendra, Rajvansh among others.

Haqeeqat won the Second Best National Feature Film Award (Rajat Kamal) in 1965. Even today, it is considered to be one the best films based on war. As the nation celebrates 70 years of Independence on August 15, it would be the perfect opportunity to watch this beautiful ode to the real heroes of our country. And what better than watching it with fellow countrymen and women, as Zee Classic premieres this timeless gem?

To celebrate the occasion of Independence Day, Zee Classic will premiere 'Haqeeqat' on August 15, 2017 at 9 am. Don't forget to tune in with your family and friends.

A Superstar In Action | Sidharth Malhotra (Interview Part I)

Suave, smart, supremely fit and witty; Sidharth Malhotra is the perfect choice for a film that goes by the name - A Gentleman, for the actor is indeed a thorough gentleman. I have seen some glimpses of his courteousness during the promotions of his upcoming film. When we travelled to Mehboob (which he jokingly referred to as his second home during promotions) for our interview, we noticed how the actor would patiently pose for images in between interactions. In fact, it was also nice to see him respectfully stand up, shake hands and greet veteran media persons, photographers. That's a rare sight in the busy world of race, glamour and competition that we live in. But, that's Sidharth Malhotra for you - real, honest and extremely chilled out!

Today, for someone who could easily be India's answer to James Bond, the actor has come a long way since his debut in 2012. Be it gaining weight for his avatar as an MMA wrestler in Brothers or going for a simple, boy next door look in Hasee Toh Phasee; Sidharth is among the league of professional actors who don't shy away from giving their 100 percent to a role. He may have seen his share of ups and downs, but he is all set to conquer the future. In just 5 years, it's remarkable to see the actor make a mark with some diverse performances - ranging from a student to a ruthless gangster, wrestler and even a man who ages through the course of a two hour film. This week, Sidharth is all set to display his acting prowess in a dual avatar, that is a mix of susheel and risky. On a sunny afternoon (a surprise in between the on and off Mumbai rains), we caught up with A Gentleman aka Sidharth Malhotra. The actor (dressed in a stylish French Connection print shirt and relaxed Gas cargos) was all ears for our questions. Oh, and he was visibly excited for the fan Qs. Excerpts from our sundar, susheel and risky Two Part interaction:

A Gentleman is the first film where you had the challenge of portraying two characters. What was that experience like?
It was an interesting experience. This is not your usual double role film, jahan do bhai hain. Here, the entire film does not revolve around the double role element. Also, if you notice, the film is called 'A Gentleman' and not 'Two Gentleman' or something. That's for a reason (smiles). So, the film has a nice twist.

How would you describe Gaurav and Rishi's respective worlds?
Both the characters come from two completely different worlds. Gaurav is an NRI, who stays in Miami. He has set goals and dreams, someone who wants a 9 to 5 job, a perfect family. He buys a big house for them, gets a big van for the future kids and would also like to cook for his wife. The only thing he doesn't have is - a wife (laughs). On the other side, there is Rishi, who is more aggressive. He is stylish and likes to cruise around on his bike, with a leather jacket on. But inwardly, Rishi is a loner, and isn't too happy with his job. So, both of them have distinct characteristics.

Personally, was there any kind of relatability with either Gaurav or Rishi?
It's extremely difficult to relate, actually. Because Gaurav has some really typical and weird dreams. Honestly, I have never seen anybody who is so obsessed with getting married or settling down. You know, he is the kind of guy who will meet a girl for the first time, take her out and even propose to her on the same day. So, I honestly couldn't relate to that. As for Rishi, he is too aggressive for me. But nonetheless, what I like about the two characters is the fact that they have a good balance of humour and action. So, a lot of humour comes from Gaurav, while Rishi is all about action.

Wasn't the film initially called Reload? What led to the change in title?
That was actually a working title for an action film. During the process, we kept thinking about other options. However, by the last leg of shoot, we realised that since Gaurav (one of the characters played by him) is a very nice guy, we decided to call it - A Gentleman. Gaurav is a thorough gentleman. Later, the 'Risky' part was added for Rishi.

From the promos, one can notice that the action in this film is a breakaway from the kind of stuff you have done in the past, be it in Brothers or Ek Villain.
You know, when it comes to making an action film, things get very difficult. Especially with keeping the budgets in place and ensuring the presentation is different. So, the action in this film is thrilling, with a lot of hand to hand action combat. It's all very real. There is no heavy CGI involved. We kept it real, but still got the same effect and kept it very slick and stylish.

Are you keen on exploring the action genre a little more in the future, especially since a majority of the audience and fans have loved your work in this space?
Personally, I love this (action) genre. I absolutely love the zone where there is a lot of thrill and action involved. I grew up watching action movies, and loved the James Bond series. Sadly, we don't make out and out stylized action films in India anymore. Even the kind of films that Bachchan sir (Amitabh Bachchan) or Dharmendraji used to do in the 70s - 80s. But, I feel fortunate that I came across this film and now that I have enjoyed it so much, I feel consciously, I will try to do a film that does this kind of action, maybe once in every two years. And if all goes well, which I am really hoping it does, we might even make this (A Gentleman) an interesting franchise.

Fan Questions

Hey Nick and Utkarsha, I feel Raj & DK are very unique film makers. Especially because of their background. They were engineers in America. And they often call themselves - an audience turned directors. They have always loved Hindi and films from down South. Then, they went on to become directors. They started off with 99, went on to experiment with the zombie space in Go Goa Gone and now, they have worked on A Gentleman. And I feel the uniqueness shows in their work. They don't do anything typical and have a fresh take. Their quirky, humorous writing is the biggest USP. In this film they have brilliantly mixed their quirky style with a dash of commercial entertainment. So, I have enjoyed working with them. A Gentleman pretty much has all the ingredients of a mainstream Hindi film. The right mix of comedy, emotion, drama, action, romance among others and plus, a double role angle for me as well. Hopefully, the audience will enjoy the two hour roller coaster ride.

Aishwarya, I really enjoyed playing Rishi. The character is stylish and has got a heroic side to him. Also, there is a lot of action going on when he appears on screen (smiles).

Dekha, do picturon mein kya hota hain (laughs). Bhabhi se sweetheart, aur yeh hain hindi picture ka kamaal (laughs). So, coming back to your question, Rita. During Brothers, the only time I got a chance to interact with Jacqueline was during promotions. And we hardly any scene together in the film. So, I got to know her really during the film. We shot the film in various locations including Mumbai, Miami, Hong Kong, Goa among others throughout the year. She is a fabulous co-star and doesn't need any ice breaker. She is always happy and doesn't allow the stress or burden of her previous work to get on to her. I have never seen her in a dull mood, and that helps. It's always nice to have someone positive around. I admire the fact that she is a self made person and works really hard.

Was there the 'health' connection too, since both of you are a lot into fitness and experimenting with exercise routines?
Oh yes! She is extremely fit and so, we would often bond over fitness. In fact, we would also bond over a lot of other activities. Like, during our Mumbai schedule, she used to talk a lot about horse-riding. One day, I told her ki meri bhi chutti hain, toh main bhi aa raha hoon. She actually called me up at 5:30 am and we were also joined by a friend. We went to Racecourse (Mahalaxmi) and enjoyed the experience of taking horse-riding lessons.

Part II of this Interview will be out on Wednesday (Aug 23). Stay tuned!

Bappa Morya Re Series 2017 | Part I - Lalbaugcha Raja

With less than 24 hours to go for one of the year's biggest festivals, the countdown to Ganesh Utsav has officially begun. In fact, it kickstarted almost a fortnight ago, with multiple 'aagman' events  and first look photo sessions. But, the city was waiting with bated breath to catch a glimpse of the king, none other than the renowned - Lalbaugcha Raja (also locally known as the Marketcha Raja). The first look was revealed earlier this week and needless to say, the charming idol left everyone mesmerised.

In it's 84th year, the folks at Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal have created a stunning gold Raj Mahal as the backdrop. It has been designed by art director Nitin Desai, whose impeccable work this year looks royal and attractive. Devotees who were eager to get a sneak peek at the idol's throne (ganesh prabhaval) this year were in for a pleasant surprise, as the King was seen seated on a gorgeous turtle throne. The overall look of the idol (inclusive of throne), created by Santosh Kambli, has been designed on the lines of Lord Vishnu's second avatar - Kurma, who according to the puranas, appeared at the time of crisis in the cosmic equilibrium.

This year, the mandal was also in the news for getting an insurance cover of Rs 51 crore, which includes not just the idol and ornaments, but also their volunteers, mandap and third-party liabilities among others. For DTH and live coverage on mobile, the mandal has joined hands with Shemaroo, continuing their 6-7 year association.

For our those of you who aren't aware Lalbaug cha Raja has been well known as the 'Navsacha raja'.  Especially among those who make a vow and come back the following year to fulfil their 'Navas'. These devotees join the 'Navsachi Rang' (queue for devotees with a vow). Every year, lakhs of devotees stand for more than 20 hours (the number goes up to almost 30 hours during the last 2-3 days) and are the only ones (apart from VVIP dignitaries) who get the golden opportunity to rest their head on the Raja's paduka and take his blessings. I have personally had the fortune of being a part of this 'Navas' queue several years back and honestly, was super impressed with the arrangements. For those who can't stand for long hours, there is a 'Mukh Darshan' queue in and around the old Digvijay Mills compound. According to the mandal, they are expected to see a footfall of over 1 - 2 million devotees during the 11 day festival this year. And just like most of you, we can't wait to witness the grandeur of Lalbaugcha Raja. Stay tuned for more updates!

A Superstar In Action | Sidharth Malhotra (Interview Part II)

Taking off from the previous part of our exciting chat, here's Part II of our interaction with the Sundar, Susheel and Risky - Sidharth Malhotra. Excerpts from the conversation:

Has there been a conscious effort to experiment with the genres of your films?
Absolutely! Because I feel it's important to change trends of the past. Purane zamane mein actors would do one kind of role or maybe even look the same. But now, the trend is different. And I feel Mr Aamir Khan is the only one who truly does it. So, I am trying to do my version, where I find interesting stories. Also, once your initial fear dies down, while becoming a little more secured with your job, then you start enjoying the work that you do. All the scripts that I have and the films that I have started working are stuff that I love. Be it A Gentleman, Ittefaq or Aiyaary; it's a large variety for an actor and I am working with some great directors.

Looking at the fate of Bollywood films in 2017 so far, as an artist, what do you think went wrong?
I truly feel, from whatever experience I have, that we have a dearth of writers. The ones who only write and don't have multiple tasks to handle or look after. These days, you will mostly find writers who have become directors or a directors who are writers themselves. And I feel writers need to be paid well. They should be employed by agencies, production houses. Here, their main goal should be to  create new stories, dialogues, research, work on new ideas among others and give us quality scripts, whether for television, web series or the big screen. Today, the audience is ready to reject anything that is sub standard.

Once your initial fear dies down, while becoming a little more secured with your job, then you start enjoying the work that you do

You have got an interesting line up, with three films - A Gentleman, Ittefaq and Aiyaary, that belong to completely different genres. What's the process like for you while working on such diverse films, especially when there are physical changes involved? Does it ever take a toll?
I think, that's what keeps me going. It's an exciting process. The personality that I am, I would get bored doing ek hi kisam ke role or looking the same in every film. So, I thrive on experiments. If I have to do a film like A Gentleman, I will go in for a new look, with a different hairstyle, some body tattoos and even physically, maybe beefing up a bit. For Ittefaq, I have to be much softer. Again, change the look and physicality. See, if you pull off it nicely, and the audience accepts it once the film is released, it feels really good! For e.g If I have to look back in the past, Ek Villain had me playing an aggressive, intense person. Then, I played a really soft, regular ghar ka ladka in Kapoor & Sons. And the kind of love I got for both these completely different roles was so nice. I am hoping this continues in the future.

You are among the select few successful actors, who has come a long way, with a massive fan following and several good projects in your kitty; all this despite no filmy connection. Does that give you some sense of satisfaction as an artist?
Definitely! Whenever I look back at my journey, it does give me a sense of gratitude and confidence. I have gone through a very odd journey. Those days, I was struggling without a job, shifting houses and today, I have got a film ready for release. I feel, ek kisam ka woh fear nikal jaata hain. Because I started from the bottom, and if by any chance I don't perform well in the future, I will still be miles ahead of what I was when I started off.

Those days, I was struggling without a job, shifting houses and today, I have got a film ready for release

What has been your biggest takeaway from the films that you have done so far?
Oh! Lots (smiles). Just the sheer magnitude of the number of people working on Student of the Year was so amazing. Getting a platform like that and working with Karan Johar, achieving the kind of stardom that we did. We would end up meeting so many people from the industry during promotions, events. While the other two knew most of them, I would just go 'Hello sir' and smile. Then, I moved on to Hasee toh Phasee, which brought me to the pure performance zone. Ek Villain had the challenge of portraying a different personality in the action space. Brothers had its own set of challenges, be it the physicality or matching up to a senior actor. I got to learn a lot from Akshay (Kumar) and we have a great relationship even today. I absolutely love him as a person and co-star. Kapoor & Sons gave me the opportunity to work with some really good artists. Baar Baar Dekho had me ageing through the film, and I took that challenge, even though the film wasn't accepted the way I wanted it to be. And now, there's A Gentleman. So, I am proud of the fact that I haven't repeated myself.

I got to learn a lot from Akshay (Kumar) and we have a great relationship even today. I absolutely love him as a person and co-star

Fan Question

Hey Yasmin. The entire soundtrack of the film is really good. But, Bandook Meri Laila is my favourite, and I really hope the audience likes it too.

You have inspired several fans and fitness enthusiasts with your SidFit series of videos and posts. What's your current fitness routine for Aiyaary like?
During the London schedule, I started working out with a trainer. I began working out with a new technology, which I also have at home. It's called EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation). It's a jacket that you wear and you have to resist electricity, while doing your workout. It's actually comparatively healthier, as you don't hurt your joins while lifting weights. It's just water resistance. So, I was doing that. Not just specifically for Aiyaary, but also my overall fitness. And, I guess it helps, as I look fit (smiles). You know, I am gonna tell him (director) to add a body shot (laughs). Let's see if Neeraj (Pandey) sir agrees (smiles).

Think of Lalbaugcha Raja and what's the first thing that comes to your mind? Grandeur? Celebrities? Crowd? Well, Mumbai's very own 'King' had humble beginnings. Ever wondered what the initial idols looked like? Or how the mandal was formed? Read on to know all about one of Mumbai's renowned pandals - Lalbaugcha Raja.

The Mandal - which was then known as the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal (Lalbaug) was set up in 1934 in a simple locality, which was then known as Peru Chawl. The chawl and nearby market was forced to shut in 1932 and the locals - mostly fishermen and vendors, vowed to get a Ganpati if their wish was fulfilled. As their vow was fulfilled, the locals formed a committee and in 1934, the first ever idol was welcomed! The ganpati became famous as the 'Market cha Raja' or 'Market cha Ganpati'. As more and more devotees began queueing up to make a wish or fulfil their vows, Navsacha Ganpati and Lalbaugcha Raja became popular names.

The Ganpati idol of Lalbaugcha Raja has been created and designed by the Kambli family of Mumbai since 1935. Earlier, the idol would change every year as per theme and backdrop. Every year, the Mandal would pick a unique theme, ranging from independence struggle to mythological stories & social issues. According to locals, the mandal played a key role during the freedom struggle. In 1949, they have even had a Mahatma Gandhi inspired idol.

All Archive Images - Credit: Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal

However, post 1990, things changed. The overall set up became much simpler, with just a basic backdrop. The idol was seated on a king style throne. But, the idol features and pose would change every year (till 2007). Some felt it matched the name given by locals, which is - Lalbaug cha Raja (King of Lalbaug). As crowds began to swell, the space required for themes & decorations, also became a major problem (as the pandal lane is narrow, with very little space in and around). Hence, sticking to a standard idol was seen as a good option. Since 2007 (till now), all idols have had the same features and pose. However, since 2015, the latest addition has been a unique throne (prabhaval). Some of the recent ones include Owl in 2016 (Goddess Laxmi's Vahan) and this year, one can see Lord Ganesha seated on a Kurma Avatar (Turtle).

75th year celebrations (2008) was a grand affair. The event got extensive coverage across various media platforms. For this special occasion, the Mandal invited famous art director Nitin Chandrakant Desai to design the backdrop and decor. Desai's royal touch turned out to be one of the biggest attractions during the festive season that year, with grand elephants (straight off the sets of Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodhaa Akbar) attracting massive attention. Since then, Desai has been designing the backdrop for the Mandal every year. Post 2015, he also started designing the throne.

Did you know? In 2011, the Kambli family became the first idol sculptors to patent the Lalbaug cha Raja idol design. As the demand for replicas went up and several other sculptors began copying the idol's style and features, Ratnakar Kambli (who currently heads Kambli arts) applied for a patent, making this the first ever case of patent application for an idol.

Over the years, while themes and idols have changed, one thing remains the same. The mandal, including locals, have always taken a step ahead when it comes to spreading awareness on social issues. Today, while the mandal does not have backdrops based on social activities, they organise events that help several major causes. Some of the prominent causes includes a dialysis centre, regular blood donation drives, computer training institutes with nominal fees, free IAS coaching among others.

No wonder they say - The King's empire is filled with love and support for everyone.

Beyond the Beaches of Goa | Dancebee Travels

$

‘Keep calm and escape to Goa’ - a mantra that most travel enthusiasts swear by. With rapid development, multiple modes of transport connecting major cities to the gorgeous state and various travel packages available, planning a trip to Goa isn’t a tedious task anymore. In fact, many folks residing in and around the Konkan (coastal) belt prefer to ditch the same old, regular touristy spots. Although the beaches have been well known as ‘crowning glory’ of the state, we truly believe there is a lot more to the beautiful state than just sun, sand and shacks. It’s time to explore Goa beyond the usual. We pick some of the most interesting places to visit and activities to try during the upcoming travel season.

Dudhsagar
Literally known as the ‘Sea of Milk’, witnessing this stunning beauty is truly an experience like no other. While the waterfall is popular with trekkers from around the world, it’s newfound fame among regular tourists can be credited to the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Chennai Express, portions of which were shot in the area. Also known as ‘Tambdi Surla’ among locals, Dudhsagar measures an astounding 310m in height and falls into the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary area. Earlier this year, I was fortunate to visit the Dudhsagar Falls, just a few days before the start of monsoon (from June to October, the area becomes inaccessible for vehicles and the only way to view the falls would be to set out on an adventurous 11km+ trek). However, if you visit anytime between September to May, one can easily plan a day long tour. Unwind and spend the day gazing at the marvellous creation of nature.

Image - Deep green pool below the massive Dudhsagar falls. Spot me in the picture if you can.
How to Travel? By road: Take your bus / car to Sanguem taluka. From here, one can choose to either trek or opt for a 6-seater jeep (priced at Rs 500 per head, inclusive of life jacket), which will take you till the base. From there, one has to walk for 15-20 mins in order to reach the main site.
Nearest railway station: Kulem
Tip: Please do not harm the water body, marine life and / or destroy the surroundings by throwing plastic, eatables, glass bottles among others. Also, avoid venturing into areas that have been marked under 'Danger' with boundaries and red flags.

Sahakari Spice Farm
Goa is blessed with some of the best spices, medicinal herbs, organic fruits among others. If understanding the science behind growing these essentials + gorging on some yummy local food interests you, then a visit to spice farm is a must. There are several plantations across Goa. Sahakari Spice Farm on the Panaji - Belgaum road is one of them. During our visit, we got a well informed tour of the farm, with our guide carefully explaining everything that goes behind the making of various items, ranging from vanilla essence to grounded spices and even the famous Cashew Feni. The tour starts with a traditional welcome, followed by a refreshing drink, hearty meal and then, a long walk across the massive plantation for approximately 30 mins, post which, you can also buy some of their in-house produce.

How to Travel? - The farm is located on the Panaji - Belgaum road, a little off the Ponda-Curti road.
Tip: Wear comfortable pair of shoes, as the tour involves walking around in the plantation.
Entry Fee: Approximately Rs 400 - Adult, Rs 200 - children (inclusive of lunch)

Sinquerim Dolphin Ride
While most of you may have explored the famous Fort Aguada or enjoyed a stay at the Taj Group of Hotels, one must not leave Sinquerim without trying out some of the best water sports and rides. After a quick tour of the Upper Aguada, drive towards the dolphin ride booking area and get ready for 30-40 mins of adventure. I say ‘Adventure’, because it’s not everyday that you get to soak in the sun and enjoy some time out in the middle of the sea, while waiting to spot some adorable dolphins in action. During our visit, we were lucky to witness a cute pair. The most beautiful moment was to watch them swim and jump out for a few seconds, in order to quickly grab some food off the fisherman’s (also our boat operator + guide) hand. You will get a chance to see the Aguada prison and a few other landmark spots during the ride.

Price: Approximately Rs 300 per head (inclusive of life jackets)

Trek / Walk
Be it an adventure trek or just a long walk, Goa is the perfect place for et all. One can explore the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary during season, or take off on a long trek from Kulem. Non-adventurous folks can set out on a long stroll across Arpora for a taste of history. Discover beautiful little cottages and let the charm of Portuguese architecture leave you mesmerised. History lovers can explore Fort Chapora situated on a hillock that overlooks the stunning Vagator beach. Those in South Goa can take a walk across the lovely Colva village to experience the rich culture. Take a walk, chat with the locals or opt for delicious Goan meals at village restaurants. You are sure to drive / walk back home with a huge smile (and a happy tummy).

Spiritual Tour
While Goa is well known for it’s beautiful churches, one can also experience divine bliss at some of their equally beautiful temples and mosques. The spiritually inclined can take a ‘Divine Tour’. Although very few temples have survived in Goa, you must certainly take time out to visit some of them during your stay. Temples like Manguesh, Shantadurga, Maruti, Bhagwati among others are peaceful and serene. Interestingly, there is also a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Brahma (one of the few temples in India) in a quaint little village called Nagargao. If ancient architecture interests you, then a visit to the Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple is a must. It is the only surviving ancient temple, built using ancient rocks. The present day temples have a mix of Nagari, Islamic and Portuguese architecture. One can’t help but marvel at the sheer beauty of these temples. The simple and serene Jama Masjid, situated in Sanguem (26 kms little away from Margao), is also a must visit. Reserve a day to visit all the beautiful churches. Apart from the popular ones like ‘Church of Basilica of Bom Jesus’, ‘Church of our lady of Immaculate Conception’ among others, you must also explore a host of other big and small churches tucked away in local villages. The peace and divinity found here is incomparable.

I Truly Believe That Fans Give You Stardom - Varun Dhawan | Exclusive Interview

With his boyish charm, extraordinary dance skills and fine performances, Varun Dhawan has become one of the biggest stars in the Indian film industry. Five years and eight films later, the actor has been one of the few successful artists to deliver back to back hits at the box office. In less than a decade, the actor has proved his mettle by experimenting with different genres and essaying memorable characters. His performances in films like Main Tera Hero, Badlapur and more recently, Badrinath ki Dulhania has earned him appreciation and millions of fans across the globe.

This time, Dhawan or VD, as he is popularly known, is back to doing what he enjoys the most - comedy. A remake of an iconic film and his father, the king of Bollywood comedies - David Dhawan, helming the project. Well, this can't get better. As Raja and Prem, VD is all set to win your heart with his crazy, fun antics in Judwaa 2, a remake of the iconic 1997 film starring Salman Khan. And if the trailer, promos and buzz around the film is anything to go by, the film is all set to rule the BO charts. We met Varun Dhawan for a quick chat, in between the crazy promotion schedule for the film. Despite the city tours and back to back promotional activities, the actor was cheerful and visibly excited. In an exclusive chat, we got VD to talk about his upcoming film (all set to release tomorrow), Salman Khan, working with his father and lots more. Excerpts from a fun chat with Varun Dhawan:

We heard that you are very stressed, especially now with the release around? It's my dad's film, so I am a little stressed. I want the audiences to watch the film and laugh. Paresh Rawal also told me recently, "Why are you youngsters so scared and stressed? Go out there and perform to your best."In fact, both Tapsee (Pannu) and Jacqueline (Fernandez), asking me to take things easy. So, I am finally trying to take thing easy and smiling a lot these days (smiles).

What do you have to say about your co-stars, Jacqueline and Taapsee? How was it working with them?
They are both very good. They are extremely positive and inspiring people. I feel, both my characters have come out better while performing with them.  Jacqueline has done a lot of hits with big stars. She is experienced. Tapsee too has done South films and is known for her roles in Baby and Pink, which have won accolades. So, I know for a fact that both of them will be appreciated in this film.

Since you are playing a double role for the first time, how challenging was the process for you?
It was definitely tough. Though they are shown as identical  twins in the film, I had to change my walk and modulate my voice for both the characters. One is born in Mumbai, while the other has grown up in London. So, I had to keep that and several other factors in mind when I was performing the two characters.

Do you feel that your dad, David Dhawan, brings out the best in you?
Well, I think so. My dad likes to take two takes. He loves monologues and songs, as he has worked with bigger actors. He used to give me lengthy lines and would then ask me to perform it in one take.  He is experienced, and when an actor gets stuck somewhere, he knows how to handle it.  He knows how to draw performances from actors.  I also know what he likes. Now, we have become very good friends. We share a very honest relationship.

Do you have any special memories of visiting the sets of Judwaa?
I don't remember much. I was just ten years old, but I used to go on the sets with dad. However, I watched the film much later when I grew up. Everyone knows that the film is a hit and the songs are iconic.

You also got the original Judwaa, Salman Khan, for an appearance in the film. Did he give you any advice?
Salman sir said, don't spoil the song Tan tana tan and don't change the steps. So, we have retained the original hook steps in the song.  He was kind enough to send a bag full of  jeans for my character Raja, which he had worn in Judwaa. People will get to see all the jeans in this film. Salman's sister Arpita is my close friend, so we know each other's family since quite long.

Dad and I have become very good friends. We share a very honest relationship

Considering this is a remake of an iconic film, there would be obvious comparisons. Especially when it comes to your performance as Raja and Prem.
Of course. I am sure people are going to compare Judwaa 2 with the original film, but it would be unfair to compare me with Salman or any of the Khans or Akshay Kumar.  They have been stars for the last 25 years, and that's why, they are known as superstars today.  They have always been well connected with their fans through every medium, be it  Radio, Cinema or social media. I truly believe that fans give you stardom. When my first film released, Salman sir had told me,  "This has done well, but what about the future?" I think that's very true. First film is like a challenge, and after that, if I don't do what the audience wants to see me do, they will throw me out of the industry.

Varun, how important is a film's performance at the box office for you? What do the BO numbers mean to you?
I personally feel that box office collections are important to gauge a film. I remember that people would often talk about my father's success and box office collections of his films. Some even said that when they were not feeling well, they would watch papa's film and feel better. In a similar manner, I want to make the audiences happy and achieve that kind of stardom too.

First film is like a challenge, and after that, if I don't do what the audience wants to see me do, they will throw me out of the industry

A majority of your fan following includes youngsters, who dutifully look up to you. However, off late, there have been instances where these young kids take drastic steps like committing suicide for a game or get addicted to drugs. What would be your advice to them?
We are surrounded with such beautiful nature, but we don't enjoy that. We are always busy with our cell phones. According to me, the biggest stress-buster is music, so please listen to music. Talk to your parents, play some sports, go out and enjoy the nature. Also, please put your mobile off when you are sleeping. Also, try to do some Yoga and meditation. Look at the brighter side of life.

With the long weekend coming up, you might have some exciting plans chalked out already. However, if you are someone who is still clueless, don’t worry. We have got this sorted for you. During the upcoming ‘bada weekend’, ditch the same old local spots or tried and tested touristy ‘things to do’ at a nearby hill station. Pack your bags and take off to Vijayawada. Why? Well, we give you more reasons than one to explore this beautiful city, packed with the perfect blend of history, culture and technology.

Accommodation: Basic, mid - range to luxury; there are several hotels in Vijayawada that one can choose from. Most of them are located close to popular tourist destinations, including the Kanaka Durga Temple, Museum, Kondapalli among others.

Travel: Vijayawada airport is located 20kms away from the main city. The airport has direct flights to Hyderabad and Vishakapatnam at regular intervals. You can take a connecting flight from your city (most of which stop at Hyderabad) and reach Vijayawada. Since there are no direct international flights, one can choose to get a flight ticket for Hyderabad and then, catch a connecting flight. Another option would be to travel by train, as the Vijaywada railway station is very well connected to all major stations in the region and one can easily book a ticket by looking at the train schedule on IRCTC website. State transport buses also connect Hyderabad and Vishakapatnam to Vijayawada.

Undavalli Caves
One of the most popular and important examples of monolithic rock cut architecture in India, the Undavalli caves were carved out on solid sandstone around the 4th - 5th century. The caves are said to be found in the 7th century and the main cave is a fine example of the early Gupta style of architecture. It is said that the caves were used as a resting place by Buddhist monks. Located at Tadepalle Mandal in Guntur district, this marvellous slice of history is a must visit for its exceptional and beautiful surroundings. A sculpture of Lord Vishnu, made out of a single granite block, is one of the biggest attractions at the caves.

Kanaka Durga Temple
A popular temple dedicated to the Goddess, the Kanaka Durga Temple is situated Indrakeeldari Hill (on the banks of river Krishna). The idol is said to be swayambhu, and appears in the astha-bhuja form (eight handed) with a powerful weapon in each hand to destroy the demon. The temple has major significance and has been mentioned in several sacred vedic texts, including the Kaalika purana. Navratri is celebrate with great pomp, with hundreds of devotees thronging the temple everyday. It is the best time to visit the temple, especially with all the festivities and special programmes. Kanaka Durga is decorated as Balatripura Sundari, Gayathri Annapoorna. Mahalakshmi, Saraswathi, Lalitha Tripura Sundari, Durga Devi, Mahissura Mardini and Raja Rajeswari Devi on each day of the Navratri festival. On Vijaya Dasami day, the deities are taken in a swan-shaped boat around the Krishna river, popularity known as “Theppotsavam”. In order to plan a darshan or seva, you can pre-book a pass on their official website.

Kondapalli Fort
Kondapalli is well known for its ancient fort and the locally-made toys. The fort was originally built as a business centre by Prolaya Vema Reddy of Kondaveedu during the 14th century. Over several centuries, the fort saw various invasions and wars. Later, it served as a training camp of the British Empire. Today, Kondapalli is among the most popular attractions in Vijayawada. While discovering the majestic architectural marvel of Kondapalli, don’t miss the popular sound and light show at the fort. Another attraction are the locally made toys. Don’t forget to pick up some of these Kondapalli toys, which are quite popular, thanks to it’s connect with ancient history. Poniki, a special type of light wood is used to make these toys, which generally resemble the characters of ancient myths and epics.

Gandhi Hill
Gandhi Hill is a special homage to Father of the Nation - Mahatma Gandhi. Located in Vijayawada (close to the Vijayawada railway station), Gandhi Hill is home to seven stupas. One of the stupas, known as High Gandhi Stupa, stands at a height of 500 feet and has inscriptions of Mahatma Gandhi's teachings, just like all the other stupas on the hill. You can also explore the Gandhi Memorial Library and planetarium. The sound and light show held at the hillock makes for a must watch. Gandhi Hill offers a breathtaking view of the city, especially post sunset. The memorial was inaugurated on October 1968 by the then president of India, Dr. Zakir Hussain.

Bapu Museum (Victoria Jubilee Museum)
This beautiful archaeological museum was established in the year 1887 in Vijayawada, and was created as part of the celebrations of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. It houses many artefacts and archaeological treasures that are very well preserved. The museum has exhibits of pre-historic tools, stone and copper plates, gold and silver coins, weaponry, textiles and pottery. The main attractions of the Museum are Mahishasura Mardhini (Goddess Durga) and Buddha images, especially a standing Buddha of white limestone that was excavated in Alluru (3rd–4th century).
