The Fruit Crush | Lakmé Lip Love Review

$

Summer maybe over, but our affair with summery fresh products shall last a little longer. After introducing the first Lip Love range with six shades last year, Lakmé introduced three new fruity shades in May this year. The new Lakmé Lip Love range, with actress Shraddha Kapoor as the face of it's campaign, promises to give a fresh tint with long lasting nourishment and a fruity fragrance to go with it. We tested the new variants and here's what we think about it. Read on!

In the image: Lakmé Lip Love in Raspberry

What? - Lakmé Lip Love

What does it promise? - Hydrate your lips with Lakme Lip Love’s fruity hues to make them beautifully tinted while protecting your lips from sun damage.

Quantity: 3.8gm
Price: Rs 200
Shades: Raspberry, Tangerine and Blackcurrent
Available at: All major e-commerce sites, Lakmé beauty advisory counters across India and Lakmé Pro Stylist Studios.

Packaging: Plastic twist up tube in colours that match the tint and flavour. The plastic cover of the tube is very delicate, and may break if you drop it anywhere. So, do handle it with care. The packaging is travel friendly.

Our experience: True to their promise, the Lakmé Lip Love range is indeed very creamy and nourishing. These tinted sticks are nothing like the others available in the market. Some of them tend to get sticky and dry up after a few hours, and are impossible due to use in a humid climate. But, the Lakmé Lip Love passed this test successfully, even when the temperature went up to 43 degrees during our trip. The texture is smooth and glides on easily. The tinted stick centre is rich and creamy, which leaves your lips feeling hydrated. The tints are subtle. Perfect for a day when all you need is a natural look with a slight tinge of colour on your lips. Our favourite has to be Raspberry, but even Black current is quite interesting, as it leaves a nice hue of purple. Tangerine is very summery, and has a refreshing fragrance as well. The price is similar to other competitors of the product available in the market, but what gives the Lakmé Lip Love an edge is the fact that it is a dual core lip balm. It focuses on both hydration as well as leaving a tint, and also comes with SPF 15. So, you don't have to buy a separate lip product for other concerns. This one does a good job of taking care of it all.

Pros: Provides hydration
Subtle tints
Glides on easily
Well priced
Easily available

Cons: Delicate plastic twist tube packaging

Verdict: Once again, Lakmé has impressed us with their lip care range. With the right amount of care and a nice tint, the Lakmé Lip Love gets a thumbs up from us. Ditch your super shiny, sticky and boring lip balms for this already!

Apart from earning accolades and praises for her performance as the gritty Bihari migrant in Udta Punjab, Alia Bhatt also upped the ante during the promotions with her chic looks. From summery fresh dresses to going the sporty chic way with canary yellow kicks, Alia made us fall in love with her choices. Plus, midway through the promotions, we saw her undergo a hair makeover, as she opted for shoulder length hair, which is perfect for summer. We take a look some of our favourite looks from the recently concluded Udta Punjab promotions.

1. Udta Punjab Song Launch
For her first solo song launch event for the film, where she was seen with director Abhishek Chaubey, Alia chose a breezy Topshop number. Styled by Ami Patel, we loved how Alia kept it simple with minimal make up, with just a pink tint on her lips. Also, we love how she paired the outfit with white ankle strap heels.

2. Udta Punjab Press Meet
Alia stepped out in a gorgeous Victoria Scandale outfit at a press meet to address a controversy surrounding the film. Flushed cheeks, bold lips and an elegant pair of gold ankle strap heels completed this chic look.

3. Udta Punjab Interviews
On a long day filled with interviews, Alia likes to keep it casual. She opted for a layered look in gingham, with this outfit by designed Aniket Satam. Once again, the actress kept it minimal in the make up department, with just tinted lips and soft wavy hair. Bershka kicks completed her simple yet super stylish look.

4. Udta Punjab Celebrity Screening
For the celebrity screening of Udta Punjab at a suburban private screening theatre, Alia looked super cute in Gabriela Alexandrova Paris co-ords. Don't miss those super cool canary yellow kicks by Adidas, that added a touch of quirk to the look. Definitely, one of our favourites!

5. Udta Punjab Success Party
Alia certainly prefers comfort over over-the-top, super glamorous outfits. For the success party, she chose a simple Urban Outfitters number. Bold red lips and a sleek tied up hair do added some drama. And of course, don't miss those checkered sneakers.

6. Udta Punjab Post Release Television Interviews
Alia added some colourful to an otherwise dull and rainy day earlier this week, as she gave media bytes and television interviews at a suburban studio. The Edeline Lee outfit paired with stunning studded kicks definitely brightened up our day. We love how hairstylist Ayesha Devitre has given the actress a soft scrunchy look. Must say, the girl got her sneaker game on point in almost every look during the film promoting!

Social media went crazy with live updates of all that happened in Madrid last weekend. After all, it was time for the annual film fiesta - IIFA Awards, where the best of Bollywood showed up. While some won awards, the others walked home with a lot of appreciation for their sartorial choices (Oh, the gorgeous Deepika Padukone walked away with both).

The IIFA weekend kicked off with a press conference, followed by IIFA Rocks, where the best of those who work behind the camera (read - technical department) walked away with a trophy. We've got a round up of the best looks spotted on the IIFA rocks green carpet! Choose your favourite.

1. Deepika Padukone

The lady in black sizzled, as she brought an edgy twist on the green carpet with her Swapnil Shinde outfit. Styled by Shaleena Nathani, our very own Piku looked super hot and carried off the Farah Ali Khan necklace and rings by Anmol Jewels quite well with the outfit. Daniel Baeur's make up was totally on point as he opted for smokey eyes which, needless to say, caught everyone's attention. Oh, and we love that hairdo! Girl, you slay.

2. Aditi Rao Hydari

Aditi looked like she had stepped straight out a fairytale. The gorgeous actress opted for a Saiid Kobeisy number in powder blue. Her overall look was kept simple, with side swept hair and minimal makeup done by artist Elton J Fernandez. Jewels by Anmol jewellery added a touch of bling. Definitely one of our favourite looks from IIFA rocks.

3. Freida Pinto

Freida Pinto opted for a royal blue Elie Saab outfit, which looked great on her. A studded clutch by Sho+Co and jewellery by Jewellerybazaar completed her look. An elegant look, that Freida carried off gracefully with a super sweet smile.

4. Divya Khosla Kumar

Divya Khosla Kumar looked charming. The pretty director - actor opted got her bling on with a beautiful Manish Malhotra outfit. Blush pink lips, drop earrings and hair tied up in a pony completed her sugar sweet look!

5. Bipasha Basu

The newly turned Missus, Bipasha Basu Singh Grover (Yes! That's her new full name) chose a blush pink Sabyasachi embroidered saree for the IIFA rocks evening. The delicate pink clutch and side swept hair with soft curls looked perfect. Bipasha went for a dark, smokey eyes and chose a nude lippie for the look.

6. Nargis Fakhri

Trust Nargis to never disappoint! She rocked the power suit look with an edge. The powder blue suit by Monisha Jaising looked fabulous on Nargis and we love how kept the overall look simple with nude lips and a slick ponytail. The nude pair of sandals compliments the outfit well. Ah! That suit fits her like a dream.

Saturday turned into a big Bollywood night, as all roads led to Madrid. After all, it was the fourth time that the IIFA Awards had returned to Europe and the host country this year was none other than Spain. And needless to say, it was enough to get our industry folks excited.

The awards night saw a bevy of Bollywood celebrities turn up in their favourite outfits, created by their favourite designers. We got you covered with the best looks from IIFA Rocks in our last post. So, here's presenting some of the hottest looks spotted at the IIFA Awards main event last weekend. Take notes, people!

1. Aditi Rao Hydari

She impressed us with her princess inspired look at the IIFA Rocks. For the main event, the actress chose an emerald green gown by Shantanu & Nikhil, which looked lovely on her. We love how these Outhouse Jewellery earrings compliment the outfit. Adding a charming touch to the look was the gold hair band, with the perfect make up by Elton Fernandez.

2. Bipasha Basu

This newly wedded hottie turned up the heat in a beautiful royal blue ruffled gown by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. With hair tied up in an elegant up do, Bipasha added a nice touch of bling with a pair of solitaire earrings by Leshna Shah's Aurelle and a studded cuff by Mahesh Notandas. Minimal make up, with a glossy swipe of lipstick, completed her look.

3. Deepika Padukone

Bollywood's stunning Mastani arrived in style. Deepika Padukone chose a magnificent Sabyasachi creation for the awards night, where she walked home with the Best Actress trophy. Styled by Shaleena Nathani, the outfit - a Godet skirt with cape - is inspired by the Spanish bullfighters. The beautiful emerald necklace and earrings by Tanishq complimented her outfit very well. Slick tied up hair, well defined brows, smokey eyes and barely there lips - Oh! We are floored already.

4. Divya Khosla Kumar

The Yaariyaan director never fails to make heads turn on the red carpet with her sartorial choices. For the awards night, she gave the traditional look a twist by taking us back to the retro era with her sharp eyes and 50's inspired up do (with hair tied up in a bun). The lehanga by Vikram Phadnis fitted her like a dream. We like how she added some fine ethnic jewellery, gajra and a small bindi to the look. Truly beautiful!

5. Sonakshi Sinha

One of our favourite looks at the IIFA Awards this year has got to be this. Sonakshi Sinha experimented with her outfits at every outing in Madrid, but this Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla look has got to be the winner among all. The actress had her princess moment in this stunning white organza dress, which had some beautiful pearls, sequins and Swarovski crystal work. Right from the hair to bold lips and her studded Louboutins, everything spelled Wow! Love that smile and spunk. Perfect to go with a beautiful outfit like this.

6. Nargis Fakhri

After a powerful appearance at IIFA Rocks, Nargis opted for a sexy Namrata Joshipura number, which was part of the collection showcased by the designed at AIFW 2016. Cold shoulder, nude lips, a slick ponytail, Swarovski earrings and the perfect pout; Nargis Fakhri was ready to rule the awards night with an amazingly stylish look.

7. Priyanka Chopra

Our desi girl aka Quantico star Priyanka Chopra enthralled the audience with a powerful live performance (Yes! She danced on pre-recorded tracks sung by her). She also took home two trophies - one for her performance in Bajirao Mastani, while the other for being the most powerful woman. For the evening, stylist Cristina Ehrlich picked a haute couture number from Elsa Schiaparelli's SS'16 collection. Priyanka looked charming in a lilac silk cigaline gown. Diamond earrings and a studded ring by Cartier were the perfect add-ons. Wine lips, well defined eyes and a slick hair up do was just what this look ordered!

8. Shilpa Shetty Kundra

Shilpa Shetty Kundra looked every inch a diva in this white custom couture gown with gold piping by designers Shantanu & Nikhil. The waist cut outs in this gown perfectly accentuated her curves and as the actress likes to call it, 'the gown fitted her like second skin'. The actress wore her hair open and kept it simple with minimal make up. Gold ear cuffs matched the piping on her gown well and we must say, Shilpa carried off this look with great panache.

If Ganga does not survive, neither will we | Dia Mirza - Exclusive Interview

In an exclusive interview with Diary of a Dancebee, Dia Mirza talks to Priya Adivarekar about living her dream of exploring the Ganges, during an enchanting and adventurous trip across several states for a recently concluded television show. Excerpts from the conversation:

For actress Dia Mirza, the opportunity to host a show based on river Ganga was a dream come true. “My father travelled by land all the way from Germany to India in the 1970’s and I grew up listening to stories of how travel defined, inspired and influenced my parents lives and their life choices. So, in a way, travel is in my DNA. And, I have grown reading about the Ganges,” says the actress. Naturally, the moment she was offered the television show, Ganga - The Soul of India, she didn’t think twice and went on to live her dream of exploring the areas around the holy river. During the shoot, Mirza traveled through several towns along the majestic river, from Gomukh in the Himalayas to the Gangasagar delta where it meets the Bay of Bengal. “This was the most enchanting experience of my life. The Ganga is one of the greatest rivers of India. A river that carries stories of our history, and is a trajectory of our present and a measure of our future. The river, which feeds over 400 million people, cuts across Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. There are so many aspects of the river that leave you feeling intrigued,” she said.

This was the most enchanting experience of my life. The Ganga is one of the greatest rivers of India.

A nature enthusiast and staunch environmentalist, Mirza enjoyed every bit of the shoot. For her, each day was filled with moments to cherish, be it crossing the raging youthful river, mountain climbing at Uttarkashi or dancing with the Santhal tribals of Sonajhuri. The trip also gave her a chance to make new discoveries. Mirza says, “I try and explore new places as much a possible. While it is wonderful to escape to a place of comfort that is familiar, I am always more excited about discovering new places. During this trip, It was fun to explore the Rajaji National Park near Haridwar, Parmarth Ashram, 'Beatles Cathedral’ or what used to be known as the Maharshi Mahesh Yogi Ashram in Rishikesh, HESCO near Dehradun, Mussourie, Devprayag, Sarnath, Shantiniketan among others.” From villages, towns, cities, art, culture, cuisine; this journey was all about discoveries for Mirza. The actress states that the people residing along the course of the Ganga are a reflection of India’s rich and diverse history and culture. For her, the locals, their lives, art forms, music, cuisine, craft all tell a story, that shows a glimpse of the past and even the future. She adds, “Modern and ancient, old and new; several facets of India can be discover along the Ganges.” Mirza also indulged in local cuisine during the shoot. Right from Kewpies in Kolkata, La Tavola Conte and Chotiwala in Rishikesh to home cooked meals by families in Allahabad and dhabas along the way. She sampled the best of both culinary worlds and for her, every food experience was delectable and delightful.

For a river that travels 2525 kms, the journey along is full of diverse experiences and unexpected weather changes. Right from -7degrees celsius at Gangotri to higher temperatures towards the Bay of Bengal, Mirza and her crew shot for the show through it all. Though the process got challenging during winter, Mirza admits that she enjoyed shooting in the cold weather, thanks to the breathtaking sight of snow covered mountains in the higher range. The shoot also gave her a chance to overcome her personal fears, as she indulged in adventure sports. She adds, “From jumping off a 80 metre high bridge on a bungee swing to white water rafting, I did it all. I have never done anything like this in any of my personal travel trips.”

From jumping off a 80 metre high bridge on a bungee swing to white water rafting, I did it all. I have never done anything like this in any of my personal travel trips.

Quiz her if the trip gave her little time to explore the place and more adventures at her own pace and she quickly responds, “If I were on a personal trip, I would have never been able to explore and discover as much as I did during this shoot. The extent of research done by the team and my own desire to weave in the powerful context of the nature and ecology of this river and how it directly impacts our lives may not have been perceivable, if I had set out to do this on my own.” Though, the actress does admit that she would love to visit the Ganges again, to spend some quality time in the forests of Uttarakhand and learn more about the Gangetic dolphins and the work being done to save them.

Ask her for tips as a first time Ganga explorer and she says, “Keep your heart and mind open to discover India and its rich culture along the course of the Ganges. Travel by road if you can, because the magic of slow travel, those memorable stops, conversations and the meals along the course are what will all contribute in making this journey truly special. Visit the historical sites, sample local handicraft, meet local musicians, discover the beauty of nature and the vibrant ecology that supports the river. Go, fall in love with Ganga,” is what she suggests. Well, so do we.

The extraordinary work being done by people to bring awareness to clean up the river, to weed out the apathy and to stir the conscience is incredible

Apart from the memorable moments and a chance to overcome her fears, the journey also left a strong impact on her mind. “Given how diverse the experience was, I got to meet many extraordinary human beings along the course of the river, who were shaping my impressions along the way. But, if I had to choose one experience that left me shaken, it has to be the sight of the alarmingly visible pollution of the river in Benaras. The muck, deplorable state of the water; everything hit me hard,” stated Mirza. But what gives her hope are the people on ground, who have resolved to change the future of the river. “The extraordinary work being done by people to bring awareness to clean up the river, to weed out the apathy and to stir the conscience is incredible,” she quips. As our conversation comes to a close, she makes an important point to create more awareness around saving the holy river - “Ganga is not just a river. It is the lifeblood of our existence. If Ganga does not survive, neither will we.”

Decoding Deepika Padukone's Fitness Regime | Exclusive - Farhan Dhalla

$

When it comes to the fittest female A-list Bollywood actor (and by fit, we don't mean thin. It clearly means being healthy, strong and agile) Deepika Padukone of those few female actors who leads the pack. With abs and shoulder cuts to die for, folks can't stop obsessing over her hot bod. The actress has been a national level badminton player and swears by regular physical exercises. Actors often change their exercise routine to suit the requirements for a role, especially if it demands a lot of physical exertion. We've all been treated to some stunning stills from Deepika's upcoming (and first) Hollywood films - xXx The Return of Xander Cage, and we can't stop going gaga over her sexy avatar in the film. While the actress began her preparations in Mumbai with trainer Yasmin Karachiwala, she also had to undergo special training during the shoot, for which her team zeroed in on a popular trainer based in Canada.

We recently came across videos of Deepika's workout regime and were quite blown away by her dedication (and that awesome-sauce routine). The man behind Deepika's transformation for her hollywood debut is none other than Farhan Dhalla, one of Canada's best fitness instructors. In the past, he has worked with some of the world's greatest athletes, including Canadian Olympians and other world class athletes, many of whom have won gold medals and are world record holders.  In an exclusive interview with Diary of a Dancebee, we got chatting with Farhan to understand Deepika's regime and quizzed him on all things fitness!

How did you come on board to train Deepika Padukone?
Deepika came to me as a referral from her trainer, Yasmin Karichiwala and my cousin Zeena Dhalla from Los Angeles. The two of the them together wrote a book in pilates titled “Sculpt and Shape - The Pilates Way” and are close friends. When Deepika was coming to Toronto, she inquired if either of them knew of any trainers in Toronto. Zeena suggested my name, as I’m not only a trainer, but also a former physiotherapist.  Everything fell into place after that. We had our first session with Deepika on April 1 and our last on May 20 in Toronto (for the film). Then, June 21-26 in Madrid (for IIFA).

What was the brief given to you for her look?

The focus wasn’t so much on the look, but the emphasis was really about helping Deepika with the physical demands in the scenes of the film. Deepika would describe to me what was required of her and then, I created a program to best prepare and optimize her performance. The benefits of this training secondarily resulted in her achieved physique. Though there were definitely no complaints about her results!

What kind of changes were brought about in her regular exercise routine, for her look in the film?
Our primary focus was on active stability, endurance and timing. Active stability is where we create a joint that is strong and flexible. It is for joints to function through full range of motion. Endurance was important to allow her to work and function with sufficient energy and minimal fatigue. And timing also refers to how well a body is coordinated to carry out a task efficiently and effectively. Since she is also a dancer, I created exercises that were like choreography. This worked best in helping her connect to what we were doing. It really made me step out of my box and tap into my creative side. It’s also one of the reasons why I love what I do. Every client is different and you have to be able to treat each one as such.

Were there any changes in her diet during this period?
My main concern with most clients is that they don’t eat enough food! But, Deepika's diet was pretty solid. So, we didn’t need to make any changes as such.

What was Deepika's exercise routine like?
A typical workout suggested by me begins with meditation and grounding exercise. We would then move on to mobility warm up exercises, in order to help her prepare for the workout. Deepika's workout in particular blended yoga, a bit of pilates (from physiotherapy principles), conditioning with weights, agility and dynamic exercises based on what she was shooting that day or week. Finally, some mediation to allow the body to assimilate and integrate the workout.

How would you describe your experience of working with Deepika?
What I noticed most about Deepika is that she has a mind set and focus that is very similar if not better then many of the athletes I’ve worked with. Her ability to focus and deliver whatever I asked her to do was quite inspiring and motivational. She is an absolute joy and blessing to work with.

Blended with Love | Garnier Ultra Blends Review

$

0
Like most other children of the 90s, I have fond memories of being introduced to one of Garnier's most popular products - the Ultra Doux hair care range, at the age of 9. The signature fragrance of that hair care range and the iconic bottle is simply unforgettable. So, when the brand recently invited us for a sneak peek into their all new hair care range at an event in Mumbai, we were thrilled. More so, because it was the perfect opportunity to celebrate their new launch and get a little nostalgic too. After all, we've had several beautiful memories of holding that bottle, shampooing our hair (leaving the bathroom smelling all good) and flipping through our luscious locks as children. Honestly, the launch couldn't get better, as Garnier surprised us with a collection like no other.

Yes! You read that right. The brand launched an all new Garnier Ultra Blends range, which consists of five lovely blends, that cater to different hair types and problems. Much like their gorgeous range, the set up at this launch event too was one of a kind. We were mesmerised by the sight of the nature inspired decor and product counters with matching ingredients arranged in a wonderful way. After an introduction to the new launch, some trivia and a glimpse of the product campaign, we got a chance to go through the entire range, one by one.

The Garnier Ultra Blends range includes:

Garnier Ultra Blends Royal Jelly & Lavender: For hair fall / scalp prone to hair fall. Promises to strengthen hair and reduce hair fall

Garnier Ultra Blends Soy Milk & Almonds: For damaged hair. Promises to repair and restore hair

Garnier Ultra Blends 5 Precious Herbs: Contains Green Tea, Henna, Lemon, Aloe and Eucalyptus. Recommended for healthy hair. Promises strong, bouncy hair and a healthy scalp

Garnier Ultra Blends Henna & Blackberry: For dull, dry and lifeless hair. Promises vibrant hair with a brilliant shine

Garnier Ultra Blends Mythic Olive: Blend of Olive Oil and Olives. Recommended for dry, undernourished hair. Promises silkier, smoother and shinier hair

Each blend is unique and different from the other, and aims at providing excellent results for the hair type that it caters to. For someone who is quite picky about the kind of ingredients used in a product, I was very happy with the detailed blend guide that is printed behind every bottle. It's always great to know what goes into the making of your go-to shampoo and conditioner. Plus, every scalp / hair type needs specific care. You cannot use a shampoo meant for oily scalp on an individual who has a normal scalp. The Garnier Ultra Blends range takes this important point into consideration, and has carefully combined blends to match every hair / scalp type.

Personally, I loved the Mythic Oil deep nourishing shampoo, which worked well for my hair. The texture of this shampoo is very rich (it's virgin olive oil, after all), with a lovely fragrance. It cleans the scalp well and leaves your hair feeling soft, nourished and silky. I am looking forward to trying this shampoo with the recommended conditioner, since I am quite happy with the results so far. Another favourite has got to be the Henna & Blackberry blend (quite uncommon from what we get to see in the market today), which has a divine aroma.

What? - Garnier Ultra Blends Range of Hair Care
Price: Shampoo - Rs 55 / Rs 120 / Rs 230 / Rs 430 (for 75ml, 120ml, 340ml & 640ml  respectively)
Conditioner - Rs 70 / Rs 175 (for 75ml & 175ml respectively)

Packaging: Beautiful is the word. The Garnier Ultra Blends range comes in the iconic, beautiful bottle that Garnier is well known for. The bottle has a flip cap, which is handy. It's quite decent to carry as well, as the product does not spill out from the bottle.

Pros: Unique ingredients
Options for every hair type
Rich texture
Great fragrance
Fabulous packaging
Economically priced
Good results

Cons: None so far

Verdict: The products from this range have got everything that you need to flaunt naturally beautiful hair. Highly recommended for it's VFM, great packaging, perfect choice of ingredients and variety. Move over 'same old boring shampoos for all', because Garnier Ultra Blends has got something special for everyone and that too, beautifully blended with love.

I have been quite fearless about all my choices in life | Birthday Special Interview - Ranveer Singh

$

0
There are very few actors with guts, determination and a crazy passion for the craft, who make it big in the Indian film industry without a godfather. By experimenting with his characters and giving his best in one film after another, Ranveer Singh entered the big league with a bang. Time and again, the actor has proved that real struggle, focus and hard work can’t stop anyone from achieving his dreams. Ranveer has carved his own niche and is certainly living his dream (even his social media bio is proof). He swept off all the Best Actor awards this year for his flawless portrayal of the Maratha Peshwa - Bajirao, in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani and has got Aditya Chopra’s upcoming directorial venture, Befikre, waiting for a December release. As he turns 31 today, here’s an exclusive chat with Ranveer Singh, who talks about his love for cinema, craziest thing he has done for a character and why he can never be diplomatic! Excerpts from a fun chat:

It is only recently that I have managed to come into my own.

On his journey in Bollywood so far
When I started off, I was completely clueless! Although I had the experience of working as an assistant director and learned a lot, I didn’t really learn much about acting. Also, I was a low rank asst director and my job primarily consisted of taking care of the crowd. So, I wasn’t really around the area where all the action took place. Toh mujhe acting ki ABCD bhi nahi aati thi. On the first day of Band Baaja Baaraat, I just walked in and kept looking around. It took time to get adapted to the fact that I was given my own vanity van, where I could dress up and then, the team would call me when my shot was ready. I would often ask Anushka (Sharma) to clear my doubts about the entire process. I felt like a kid who has seen a huge toy store for the first time in his life. So, that’s how it all began. Right from acting to learning the craft and understanding how one is expected to function on the sets, I learned everything on the job. In fact, even when I won my very first award for the film, I was clueless about the whole process of entry and exit (laughs). Most of my pictures from that event had come out with weird expressions. Also, during my initial years, I wasn’t well aware about the way one needs to talk at a public forum. I would end up talking as if it’s my own living room (laughs). I often look at my photographs from those days and wonder, “Main aise kaise hua karta tha?” I would wonder if there is a certain mould that an individual needs to fit into, in order to survive as a mainstream Bollywood actor. Maybe, I was trying to fit in and it is only recently that I have managed to come into my own.

On the turning point of his career
I think 2013 was a big year for me. With the little bit of validation that you get for your work, you do start feeling more confident about yourself and also feel very comfortable. After a dream start in Band Baaja Baaraat, I didn’t have a release for almost 19 months. It was like a quiet phase. So, when Lootera came, it was well received and earned critical acclaim. Then, a few months later Goliyon Ki Rasleela - Ram Leela released and that was a big breakthrough for me.

Image Credit: Vogue India Oct 2015

It is very important that the audience recognise that I am a versatile actor, because then, I will always have them looking forward to what’s coming up next.

On experimenting with characters
I am a very avid film watcher and I get very fascinated with actors. I have maximum respect for actors who are able to completely transform themselves in to a character. One of my heroes is Daniel Day Lewis. When you watch My Left Foot, you can’t say that he is the same actor who has also performed in a film like There Will Be Blood or a Lincoln. His characterisation is so distinctive, that’s it tough to find out if he is the same human being. Personally, I highly regard actors who have that kind of versatility and the ability to transform. I have always aimed to be like that. So, when I first heard the script of Bajirao Mastani, I realised that this character had that scope. So far, in my career I have been able to it in a decree which is recognised and I am very happy to get that kind of recognition for versatility - from being a Delhi boy in Band Baaja Baarat to a very flamboyant Ram and then, turning Peshwa in Bajirao Mastani. For me, it is very important that the audience recognise that I am a versatile actor, because then, I will always have them looking forward to what’s coming up next. The same goes for directors. I want to work with the best film makers and want them to believe that whatever character or mould that they have created, I will fit into that.

The making of a character
I always ensure that I get some work done before stepping into the shoes of a character. Like for Band Baaja Baarat, I hung out with Delhi boys. I made friends with some guys from Delhi University, recorded their voice, took video clips. In fact, I found a guy who was a lot like Bittoo Sharma and I based my character on him. For Ram Leela, I did a complete Gujarat darshan for a week and worked on picking up the language, dialect, expletives among others. For Bajirao, it wasn’t possible for me to go back to the 1700s. So, I locked myself up in a room for 21 days and decided to cut off completely. In order to get into the character, you need to go away from yourself and your familiar surroundings. My process is different for every film, and I won’t call myself a method actor. I personally think method is a very loosely thrown around word.

It's not that I wasn't fearless enough before this film (Bajirao Mastani). I have been quite fearless about all my dealings and choices in life.

On the craziest thing he has done for a character
I often do crazy things, but only when it is required for a character. For instance, when we were shooting for Lootera, there were major portions where I had to walk around like I have been shot on my hip. I have never been shot and so, I was confused as to how I could project this. So, I spoke to some army guys and kind of understood what it feels like. I felt there should be a starting point of pain, which can further be amplified while acting it out. So, I would staple that area, which would hurt a lot and in half an hour, the portion would go numb and you can't feel anything. So then, whenever the camera rolled, I would remove the pins and enact the scene. Oh god! It used to pain like hell. So now, when I watch Lootera, I find everything to be quite convincing (laughs). Because right from the tip of my toe to the head, I used to be in excruciating pain. A lot of people ask, why do I such things and the only thing I can say is - It's coz' I don't know any better.

On his biggest takeaway after playing Bajirao
His fearlessness! He is an absolutely fearless man, who did not fear any consequence. Not even death. He tackled everything in his life head on. That's one thing I have learned from the character. Why be afraid of anything? It's not that I wasn't fearless enough before this film. I have been quite fearless about all my dealings and choices in life. But after portraying Bajirao, it's even more. I really don't fear anything or anyone.

I live each day like it's my last. So, every time I perform on stage, I look at it as my last show

On his extra ordinary energy
I often wonder why people keep saying I am super energetic. Aisi kaunsi extra energy hain mere andar? I feel totally normal. Maybe, by the general standard of people in the industry, people feel like I have extra energy. It’s a basic thing, you see. I have always wanted to be an actor and I became one. So, whenever I get the opportunity to do something, I give it my all. Like Priyanka (Chopra) puts it, “You are happy with the just the fact that you became an actor.” I guess that’s where the enthusiasm and happiness comes from.

On his work mantra
I am someone who does not believe in living for tomorrow. There is no guarantee of the future and I have always believed in living for the present. I live each day like it's my last. So, every time I perform on stage, I look at it as my last show. When I essay a character, I work on it thinking it is my last film. The thought that I may or may not get the opportunity to do what I am doing right now, is deeply ingrained in my mind. That’s why, I always give my best at everything that I do. I remember working on an ad campaign, where the creative director spoke to me at length, understood my personality and worked on a tagline that goes, “Ab mein sab daal do.” That’s the philosophy that I swear by. Live the past behind, don’t think about the future. Toh jo ab hain uspar mehnat karo.

On Befikre
I am quite happy to be doing this film (Befikre). It's just what the doctor ordered after essaying a character like Bajirao (smiles). It's the kind of a happy romance that I really needed. A vacation that I have earned. Also, I was very keen doing on something light after Bajirao Mastani. My character in the film is absolutely lovely.

On not being diplomatic
I can't change my personality for anyone. I am very honest and open about a lot of things. I can never be diplomatic. Just that, after being around for some years, there are a few things that I am not comfortable talking about. Like, I don't allow people to shoot or take pictures inside my house. I don't  want my family to get into the media glare, because that's one advantage I've got over other people, the fact that my family comes from a normal background. So, I don't want them to get caught up in this fast and fancy life, that comes along with this profession.

On being an entertainer
I get very excited when I see my fans, especially when it's a large crowd. I love it! I am a people's person. I feel like there is always a positive exchange, whenever I meet my fans. Somehow, whenever I am there, people smile a lot and I love that. And when they smile, I smile back (laughs). I am a crowd pleaser, a showman, an entertainer and I like being that way. I like to keep people entertained through jokes. I love seeing laughter, happiness and fun in every atmosphere that I am a part of. Like Naseer sir (Naseeruddin Shah) says, "If the world is a stage, and if Life is a play; you, my friend, choose to play the fool." And he means it in a good way, as the fool was the positive one. I have no interest in being a king. I am very happy being the court jester (smiles).

Spa La Vie by L'Occitane | Mumbai Spa Review

It's been quite a hectic first half of 2016. What with back to back projects, traveling across the city everyday for one commitment after another and more. Apart from my short travel break in May, I haven't really got much time to unwind. So, when the super sweet folks at Spa La Vie by L'Occitane invited me for an experiential at their sprawling 8000 sqft wellness sanctuary, I couldn't say no. Spa La Vie is an extension of the popular French brand L'occitane. Founded in 1976, L'Occitane is well known for it's aromatic products, that are inspired by Provençal beauty secrets. Despite being situated right in the middle of all the hustle and bustle at Delisle Road (South Mumbai), the moment you enter the spa, you are transported to a world of serenity and peace. So, does the Spa La Vie meet all our expectations? Read on to know our experience.

I reached the venue on time (as per our scheduled appointment) and we were welcomed by the supportive and extremely warm front desk staff. After a quick chat, one of the staff members asked me to fill a form, which required details of my daily lifestyle, area of pain (if any), the kind of massage I am looking for among others. While I continued to fill up the form, I was introduced to my therapist, who then got me a welcome drink - a delicious, strong concoction of honey, mint, ginger and lemon (honestly, it was perfect for the cold that I was then suffering from). After going through all the information, I was asked to take a pick from the Revitalising or Relaxing Aromachologie Massage. The main difference between the two were the oil blends and technique. I opted for the former, as the technique and oil combination sounded like just what my body needs. I switched from my ankle strap heels and wore the pair of Oshos that the therapist got for me, as began walking towards the experiential rooms.

The welcome drink and warm towel tray
The Hammam Room
Spa La Vie has multiple rooms dedicated to various treatments, ranging from the Individual Spa Room, VIP Couple Massage Rooms, Facial room and a Hammam room specially dedicated to exclusive wet treatments that are unique to this spa. The Spa room for an individual includes a bath tub (can be an add-on) and shower cubicle with L'Occitane products. It also has a hair dryer, a two-door wardrobe to keep your belongings (with a special box for your valuables) and a small section of the room is reserved for the welcome treatment. After getting a glimpse of all the rooms, the therapist and I proceeded towards the Spa room reserved for me. As soon as you enter the experiential room, the therapist explains the entire treatment in detail, along with introducing the products used for the massage. You are then handed a robe and disposable undergarments for the treatment. Once you've changed, the therapist starts off with a 5 minute welcome treatment, where your legs are nicely cleaned. After that, the therapist kicks off the massage by asking you to take a deep breathe and smell the relaxing oil, which is so good, that it is sure to put you off to sleep. Gentle Swedish effleurages and Balinese movements follow, as we enter a blissful world, free of stress and fatigue for 60 mins, where no mails or phone calls can disturb you.

Technique: Swedish effleurages, deep pressure Lomi Lomi and Balinese movements.  The therapist first starts off by massaging the right side of your body, followed by the left and finally, there is a head massage. The final step of the treatment involved a hot towel that is gently place on your back, hands and legs to release all the fatigue from your body.

Oil Blends: Lavender, mint, pine and rosemary essential oils

Time: 60 minutes

Price: Rs 3250/-

Overall Experience: The therapists at Spa La Vie are well trained and very prompt. They take the efforts to understand your lifestyle and ensure that you get the best results from the treatment offered. Plus, what I really liked about my therapist was the fact that she didn't rush through the whole thing or tried to finish explaining the treatment in haste. Every minute detail was taken into consideration and discussed, before starting off the treatment. Since I had a bad cold, the therapist was sweet enough to stop and quickly get me a bottle of water, tissues whenever I sneezed. The techniques used in this treatment were perfect for anyone who has a stiff neck or shoulders, tired legs or hands that have suffered enough with all the typing and tweeting throughout the week. After the amazing massage, I opted to take a bath (since I had a meeting scheduled that evening). Spa La Vie also gets brownie points for stocking up on L'Occitane products everywhere. I swear by their shower gels and it was a delight to also sample their hair care products. They also have a counter right next to the foot reflexology area, where you can buy some of their popular products. They have bath, face and hair towels in multiple sizes to suit your needs. All the spa rooms are well maintained. Hygiene is of utmost importance at a spa and the folks at Spa La Vie leave no room for doubt in this department. A quick hot shower later, I dried my hair and changed, only to feel ten times more lighter and calmer than I was earlier in the day. While changing from the Oshos to my heels again, the super sweet therapist got me one more cup of the herbal tea, as a remedy to cure my cold and sore throat. Full marks to Spa La Vie for their courteous, prompt and hard working staff as well as amazing hospitality.

Verdict:
Highly recommended for the variety of treatments, excellent ambience, great hospitality and of course, a blissful overall experience!

Anushka Sharma not only managed to win accolades and love for her impeccable performance as the gorgeous Aarfa in Sultan, but also scored points for her sartorial choices during the promotional leg of the film. From casual, relaxed vibes to sleek and sophisticated, Anushka aced every look with great confidence and the perfect make up - hair combination. We take a look at her top picks during the Sultan promotions. Do you have a favourite? Coz' we sure do.

At the trailer launch in Nikhil Thampi

Trailer launch in Nikhil Thampi - Anushka pulled off the ultimate girl boss avatar at Sultan trailer launch in Mumbai. For the occasion, which was a grand event at a Mumbai studio, Anushka picked an all black pant suit by Nikhil Thampi with metallic gold detailing on the waist. Sleek, straight hair with fresh make up and light coral lips blended perfectly with her overall look. We couldn’t take our eyes off the studded pair of Louboutin flats, which added a nice touch of bling to an otherwise noir dominated look.

Video Promotional Activities in Verandah
Who cares about Monday blues when Anushka was busy rocking a denim day. She carried off this casual outfit in the prettiest way and rocked the season’s hottest trend - off shoulder, with an icy blue top by Verandah. Ripped denims, minimal make up, sleek hair and a pair of studded Valentino ankle strap flats was all she needed to rock this look!

Promotional Activities in H&M

For a day full of promotional activities for her then upcoming film, Anushka kept it simple and stylish with an all black H&M outfit and black peep toes to go with it. Nude lips, minimal make up and sleek hair went well with this look.

On the sets of Udaan in Sabyasachi

To add some glamour and promote her film on a daily soap, Anushka picked a stunning Sabyasachi number with red floral embroidery. We loved the matching pair of earrings by Curio Cottage. Vardhan Nayak’s make up was a mix of rich rouge and cherry, with bold red lips doing and cheek highlights on point. A sleek centre parted bun completed her look.

On the sets of a reality show in Nachiket Barve

One of our favourite looks from the ones sported by Anushka during the Sultan promotions. The actress looked chic and fun in a black Tulipmania number by Nachiket Barve. Right from the big floral detailing to long sleeves and shoulder cut outs, everything about this outfit spelled perfect. Summery fresh make up by Puneet Saini, soft tousled hair by Daniel Bauer and those lovely tie-up black flats; all of them made for a complete winner. Major girl crush on this look!

Success Press Conference in Pull & Bear

Trust Anushka to end the promotional leg of Sultan with a bang, literally! She upped the style game with the perfect athleisure look at the success meet of Sultan in Panvel. A Pull & Bear denim jacket, the perfect jersey dress, pair of white sneakers and reflective round sunglasses in one of our favourite colours; the entire look was put together very well. We like how she tied her hair up in a simple high ponytail (keeping the humid weather in mind) and kept the make up at bare minimal, letting her outfit do all the talking. Her attitude and smile was like the perfect cherry on top.

The Bollywood Prisma Love

Apps these days create a rage within minutes of their launch. While Pokémon Go has got game lovers from across the globe hooked on, another app became a hot favourite, hitting the #1 spot on the App store last fortnight (don't fret, the beta version of the app is now finally available on Android). Yes, we are talking about Prisma - the art photo editor that has got everyone addicted to its cool picture effects and superb filters.

Almost everyone on Instagram and Facebook are busy giving their current profile pictures or new selfies a spin with the art-attack that Prisma has to offer. And well, the bug has bitten our b-town folks as well. Over the weekend (and of course, during the week too), we saw several celebrities showing off their artistic side by playing up with Prisma effects on their pictures. We got together some of the best celebrity 'prisma-fied' images spotted on Instagram and other social media platforms.

Varun Dhawan - Instagram @varundvn

Varun Dhawan has been making the most of this app by turning images clicked during film promotions (and some private selfies) into what he likes to call - street art. During our recent interview, Dhawan confessed that he is quite fond of the app and likes to experiment with the available effects on various images from his gallery.

Sidharth Malhotra - Instagram @s1dofficial

Just like his Student of the Year co-star, Sidharth Malhotra too joined the Prisma bandwagon recently. He posted a rather filmy picture of himself with casting director Mukesh Chhabra. Keep em coming, Sid! We are loving these filmy shots.

Shahid Kapoor - Instagram @shahidkapoor

It won't be wrong to confess that we love Shahid's Instagram feed. He has always left us in awe with his fantastic photography skills in the past (and let's not forget, those intense selfies that we absolutely love). This time, it looks like Shahid has got Prisma to help him add an artistic touch to his amazing (and should we add, super sexy) photographs. He recently shared this image with the caption 'This is fun' on Instagram and we must say, that's one helluva fierce look.

Jacqueline Fernandez - Instagram @jacquelinef143

Jacqueline always gets her social media game on point. From giving us a sneak peek into the backstage madness on Snapchat to posting some seriously hot photo shoot images on Instagram; Jacqueline does it all in style. Recently, she shared a picture with her team (while getting ready for the first episode of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa ) and added a touch of the Illegal Beauty filter on Prisma. The team that takes selfies together, stays beautiful together.

Sonakshi Sinha - Instagram @aslisona

Art for an art, quite literally. Sonakshi loves unwinding by painting or adding finishing touches to her pending artwork. If you follow her on Snapchat, you will be in love with this super talented girl's work. In her Prisma debut, Sonakshi added an image where she is seen looking at her artwork rather closely. The caption explained her love for paintings and she further went on to explain how it leaves her feeling relaxed. Way to go, Sona!

Arjun Kapoor - Instagram @arjunkapoor

Arjun has got a rather eye-catching Kenzo tee on him. The actor, who recently turned voice actor with Ice Age: Collision Course in Hindi, posted this image on Friday, with the perfect caption that went - "Eye got my eye on you." Good one, Arjun!

Alia Bhatt - Instagram @aliaabhatt

Alia Bhatt was among the first Bollywood celebrities to get hooked on to Prisma. While her first image was a selfie, the next one turned out to be the first look of her upcoming film with Shah Rukh Khan titled Dear Zindagi. In her latest post, all jazzed up by Prisma, the actress is seen riding a horse and sporting a cool look. We wonder if this is another sneak peek of her upcoming film? Yes, Alia?

Ileana D'cruz - Instagram @ileana_official

After starring opposite Saif Ali Khan in Happy Ending, Ileana will be back on the big screen with Rustom this year. The actress kickstarted promotional activities for the film wearing a Rutu Neeva outfit and posted a 'look of the day' image on her Instagram account. Later, the same photograph was posted, albeit with a Prisma twist. The actress finally gave in to her temptation of using the app and perfectly captioned it with the hashtag - #jointheherd

Tarun Tahiliani’s showcase at the India Couture Week left us in awe. The ace designer paid a homage to Indian courtesans with a showcase complete with grandeur and elegance. Titled ‘The Last Dance of the Courtesan’, Tahiliani’s rich and exquisite collection had outfits in hues of sunset ombre, yellows, reds and oranges on fabrics ranging from georgette, cotton jacquard to cotton silk, crepes and more.

But it wasn’t just the contemporary collection that took our breath away. We loved how the make up broke monotony and went with hues of glamorous gold to compliment the traditional bridal wear hues seen on the runway. If you are someone who wants to ditch the typical bridal make up, for a more modern and glamorous look, we’ve got you covered with a step-by-step tutorial using MAC cosmetics! Here’s how you can achieve the look, created by popular MUA Mickey Contractor and sported by models at the Tarun Tahiliani showcase.

Start with MAC Fix+, an aqua-spritz of vitamin and minerals, infused with a calming blend of green tea, chamomile, cucumber, topped off with the fresh, natural, energizing scent of Sugi. It adds radiance and helps prepare the skin

Use the Mineralize Charged Water Moisture Gel, an ultra-light formula that intensely hydrates and leaves skin more supple and luminous

Next apply the Prep + Prime Moisture Infusion, a lightweight serum that saturates the skin with a concentrated boost of hydration

Correct and Conceal using the Pro Conceal and Correct Palette

Use the Select Sheer Pressed Powder, a lightweight pressed powder with a silky, natural matte finish and a soft-focus effect

I have always believed in spreading happiness in the world - Varun Dhawan | Exclusive Interview

It’s a gloomy afternoon, as we head towards a suburban studio to meet the cast of Dishoom. While the pitter-patter of the rains continue, Varun Dhawan enters the room like a sunshine, packed with energy and enthusiasm for the long day ahead. The actor has been promoting his upcoming film non-stop, with multiple city tours and unique activities, which also included a training session with female journalists and a live stunt in Delhi. Despite a hectic schedule, he is enjoying every bit of these interactions with the media and fans. This, before he starts rehearsing and gets ready to fly to the U.S for his first world tour. After three successful releases last year, Varun is all set to thrill us with an action packed avatar in Dishoom. After a quick lunch, the actor, dressed in a casual outfit, his favourite trademark baseball cap and a big bright smile, settled down for a chat with Priya Adivarekar, to discuss all things cinema and lots more.

How did your prepare for your role, that of a Dubai based cop Junaid Ansari?
My character has a complete graph, going from a boy to man. He is based in Abu Dhabi and is not an Indian. Junaid is a rookie cop, who is not taken seriously, and as the film progresses, it shows how he rises to the occasion and solves a big case. A lot went into creating Junaid, because it is not easy to play a police officer. I really admire the military and armed forces in our country, and always go out of my way to ensure I speak to them or get a picture clicked whenever they ask for one. There is a lot of discipline required. I had to lose a little weight, because that’s the kind of a look that Rohit had visualised. He wanted John to have a super muscular physique, while he wanted me to be lean and agile. Rohit was very sure that he wanted the actor playing Junaid to look, behave and act a certain way. Since the film is based on a time period of 36 hours, there had to be a certain continuity. So, I used to cut my hair once in every three days and shave twice a day. I can’t explain how chikna I would end up looking (smiles). I also have a tan in the film, since the character is middle eastern.

Since you are playing a cop for the first time, did you meet any real-life cops to get your character right?
We shot with the CID of Abu Dhabi, which helped as I got to learn a lot about the nuances. I also learned a lot of techniques, like how an interrogation is done. I am also seen speaking Arabic, especially during the first half. So, I had to learn a little Arabic. There is also a lot of referencing to characters like Tintin, who is like this boy on a mission. Junaid is quite excited about being a part of the all the action and for him, it's like a discovery.

Was there anyone else in the running to play Junaid Ansari, or did Rohit always have you in mind while scripting the film?
Rohit penned the script and the casting began only after Sajid Nadiadwala (producer) came on board. Of course, being a brother, I always ask him if I could read the script. As a brother, I like doing that. So, when I read the script for Dishoom, I felt I could do a good job as Junaid Ansari and that’s why, I told him to consider me. He asked if I was sure about playing Junaid, and I promptly said yes. Honestly, I thought this would be the right time to play a character who is a rookie cop. I don’t think I can justify such characters after say, two or three years, because I will start looking older.

Junaid is a rookie cop, who is not taken seriously, and as the film progresses, it shows how he rises to the occasion and solves a big case.

How did Rohit toy with the idea of exploring a situation that involves a kidnapped Indian cricketer?
The film deals with the whole menace of match fixing, the bookies involved, the effect on cricket and how cricketers often get trapped. It opens a can of worms. Rohit has always been a fan of cricket, and the whole build up happened when there were attacks on cricketers (like the one on Sri Lankan cricketers  in Pakistan). So, that's how the idea of Dishoom was born. If a top Indian cricketer went missing, how would the country react? Of course, the nation would go berserk. Let's face it! Security fears are all across the world and anything is possible. We have all seen how several countries have been attacked in the recent past. There have been some references to real life incidences, which you will relate to once you watch the film. Although Dishoom has it's share of light hearted moments, at it's core, it is a serious action thriller. The film is more than what meets the eye.

The Dishoom album is doing really well. But, is there a specific reason for only sticking to four songs?
Dishoom aims to re-define commercial cinema and we haven't conformed to the set rules of having a set number of songs or specific sequences. While we have 4 songs, the film will have only one. The special number (Jaaneman Aah) is also there for a reason, and it was a part of the script from day one. Parineeti (Chopra) plays a cameo, and it is a small, but important character. But, it is only Sau Tarah ke that you will see during the duration of the film.

You have performed some daredevil stunts for Dishoom, one of which includes the helicopter sequence. What was going on in your mind while hanging out of it?
Let’s face it, both John and I were a little scared. If you take anyone up that high, a little bit of fear and nervousness definitely kicks in. It’s natural. In fact, I wasn’t showing my fear because I thought John was scared and vice versa (laughs). But, I think there was more pressure on John, because he was focusing on getting it done perfectly with me, and ensuring that none of us get injured. Before we kicked off that sequence, he got a call from my Dad who told him to take care of himself and me. So, he was worried, since it was not just about his own, but also the co-actor’s (Varun) safety. But, the sequence looks very cool! There is a scene where John is hanging off the helicopter, and I am hanging from his hand. And let me tell you this, we have got all this done by ourselves. As soon as we finished, John was like, “Kaisa hain? Theek hain?” I was in a dilemma. How do I tell him? Everything was so surreal. In fact, when the helicopter was flying over a waterbody, I could clearly see the fish inside. It was a beautiful experience, and I must add that I felt safe because I performed these stunts with John.

Did your father often call to check on you, considering you were performing a lot of stunts.
Like any other caring Dad, he would often call, but he won't call me more than 2-3 times because he knows I would get upset or irritated. But, I know he keeps calling people around me. So, he ends up calling my driver or manager to check if I have eaten, or where I am going (laughs). Even during the helicopter sequence, I knew he had stressed out John, because he kept asking me if I was okay. It was only later that John informed me about Dad's call. That call pressurised John more than the stunt, I am sure (laughs).

Dishoom aims to re-define commercial cinema and we haven't conformed to the set rules of having a set number of songs or specific sequences.

Actors often confess that they either feel too comfortable or pressurised while working with someone from their family. You have earlier worked with your father (David Dhawan), and now your brother. How would you describe your experience?
While working on Main Tera Hero, there was a lot of pressure, since it was just my second film. But during Dishoom, I definitely felt a little more confident. Having said that, it is important to understand that when someone knows you well, they also know how much they can push you. And in Dishoom, Rohit has really pushed me to get everything right. Everyday, Rohit would keep telling me that I am not Varun but Junaid Ansari. It came to a point where we would not interact after pack up. We didn't speak for almost 40 days, and post pack up, we would just go our own ways. That's because I had to be Junaid Ansari and believe that I am from Abu Dhabi, speak a particular language, get the dialect right and behave a certain way. That process wasn't easy, and I took some time to get into the flow of things.

How would you compare your father and brother as directors?
Honestly, it is very difficult to compare them. My father has a legacy in creating entertaining films, while Rohit is a complete task master. He has studied the art in NYU and later, assisted Farhan Akhtar. So that way, Rohit always has a planned process while working on a film. A lot of prep happens before we go on the sets.

You bonded quite well with John. How was it working and 'working out' with him?
Since we had to do a few sequences where both of us flaunt our bodies, both John and I were very serious about getting it right. Some of these sequences were important. So, post pack up, we would work out together. Also, let’s admit it, if you want a gym partner who can help train you well, then who wouldn’t want it to be John Abraham? And luckily, he was there! I would just request him to train me and he did. For the last 20 days, he completely trained me, from working on my form to helping me to getting my technique right.

Rohit would keep telling me that I am not Varun but Junaid Ansari. It came to a point where we would not interact after pack up

Twitter Fan Question

Is there any one who influences your versatility as a dancer?
I am a big fan of Chris Brown. I have been following him ever since he started off. As far as someone's influence is concerned, I feel all actors dance really well. All our Bollywood stars have been great dancers. I have grown up watching Govinda dance on screen and I personally believe that no one can get the kind of finesse that he has. But when it comes to versatility, I feel Chris Brown is someone who does a variety of different styles, ranging from krumping, house among others. And most of those styles are now coming back.

And you have brought out that versatility in all your songs featured in Dishoom as well.
Oh yes! (smiles) If you watch Toh Dishoom, you will notice that I have done a lot of old school house and krumping. Even the choreography in Sau Tarah Ke cannot be defined as typical Bollywood. It is Jaaneman Aah where I have gone completely filmy, with all the thumkas and moves that define Bollywood dance, since it caters to a specific section of the audience. So with the choreography in Dishoom, the idea was to have that kind of a versatility. Since I like experimenting with dance styles, it's amazing how I got a chance to perform different forms in each song.

As an actor, have you ever felt pressurised by box office numbers or this whole craze to become a part of the 100 crore club?
I am of the opinion that one should not compare their success to that of other people. For me, if Dishoom is liked by the audience and if they thoroughly enjoy it, I would consider that as a huge success. It would be a victory for me if someone comes up and feels that my performance was different than what I have done in the past.

I am of the opinion that one should not compare their success to that of other people.

Are you looking forward to working on a character on the lines of what you essayed in Badlapur, again?
Scripts like that are rare. Honestly, Badlapur wouldn't have been what it was, if it wasn't for Sriram Raghavan and I was lucky that he was directing it. If a film like that is not made properly, it can get a totally different reaction. It is more difficult to get a well written serious script. Because if the emotions don't come across, there is nothing else that can save the film or the actor.

How is Badrinath Ki Dulhania shaping up? Also, will the franchise continue to have you in the lead?
Pretty good ya! I am just keeping my fingers crossed that it all goes well. We have completed shooting 30 per cent of the film. Rest of the film will be shot, once we are back from the Dream Team tour, which is scheduled next month. And yes, I think that's the plan. Not just me, but also Alia, Shashank and even the DOP (Neha Matiyani) is the same. Several assistant directors working on the film are also the same. So, it's actually like working together as a family.

Most of your characters have always been full of life, energetic and fun. Are you a lot like what you have portrayed on screen in most of your films?
I would say I am moody, like most other human beings. I have my days when I am super happy, and some when I feel down or sad. So, it depends! That's how most people are. Sometimes, even the most serious person will crack a joke at some point in his life. But, I have always believed in spreading happiness in the world. The world definitely needs it.

5 Must Have Bras for Every Woman

$

Most women stress on buying the right outfit, that not only matches their personality, but also the occasion. But, most of them forget that it is equally, or perhaps more important to feel good from the inside. No, I am not here to discuss soul searching or any form of meditation. I am talking about the need to zero in on the right Bra. We get so lost in trying to get everything right, that we often forget the most basic necessity - a well fitted bra, that is actually the right style and size. In a country that is still opening up to the concept of investing in lingerie and buying a bra according to the cup and band size (and not just any random S, M or XL), it is also important to understand that things don’t just stop there. Just like there is an outfit for every occasion, we need to have a bra that goes well with every outfit (and provides perfect support and comfort).

For those who are still confused, don’t worry! We’ve got you covered. Here’s a list of the 5 bra styles that are a must have for every woman, irrespective of age, size, activity or occasion.

1. Everyday Bra
The basic bralette or the good ol’ everyday bra is what you will find yourself in on most days. These do the basic job of providing good support and comfort. These come in both wired and the non-wired variety, and are mostly non-padded. If you end up finding a super comfortable bralette, that you cannot let go of, ensure you stock up on them in different basic colours (nude is a must). Ensure you re-stock in every 5-6 months (or as soon as the bra loses it’s fit).

2. Strapless Bra
This is a must have for all those who swear by outfits that range from cold shoulders to strapless or even halter. Good to go with necklines that are scooped, boatneck or square. Your best bet would be a Nude coloured bra, but you can still go ahead and experiment with colours (or best, stick to black). Make you check that the bra comes with the perfect rubber grip and has at least three hooks. You don’t want a bra that keeps sliding down, do you?

3. Multiway Bra
On days when you decide to wear a one-shoulder outfit, this bra shall be your saviour. Most women ignore this style, thinking it’s not really necessary and that they already own a strapless bra. But, it can go a long way in helping you modify your bra according to the requirement of the outfit, be it a halter, racer back or even strapless. Investing in a good multiway bra will ensure that you don’t have to stock up on multiple ‘rarely used’ styles.

4. T-shirt Bra
All of us love T-shirts. But, nobody likes the texture of a bra being visible on a well fitted tee (don’t we all hate a visible panty line? The same goes for a bra). A well fitted T-shirt bra is a must have for all those who swear by tees, and wear them on a regular basis. These bras have a contoured cup made of very thin material, making it perfect to wear under a t-shirt or anything made up of a thin fabric. Perfect to wear under a silky blouse or dress as well.

5. Sports Bra
This one’s for those who swear by their workout and fitness routine everyday. The biggest sin one can commit is to workout wearing a normal bra. Why on earth would you torture your breasts and further ruin the breast tissue? For those who think this style is made only those who spend hours in the gym, you are wrong. Even brisk walking in a normal bra can lead to damage, that can further lead to sagging. Be it Yoga, Walking, Running or any other activity, investing in a good Sports bra is a must. It provides the perfect support required for any activity. Also, don’t forget to check on the intensity of your activity, as that will determine the kind of sports bra you can opt for. Most top brands categorise their sports bras according to the impact of the activity.

Nike pro-rival women's sports bra

With a variety of lingerie brands, both basic and premium, available on online shopping sites and at your local mall, things have become easier for us to find the right bra, that matches our requirement and budget. Go, get yourself measured and invest in some of the must-have styles today!

Madaari | Film Review

After a super packed weekend, we finally (better late than never) caught up with Nishikant Kamat’s much awaited directorial venture - Madaari, during the week. While we expected the occupancy to be around below-average, we were quite happy to see afternoon shows running with close to 40% seats filled. After close to two weeks at the cinemas, the film has performed very well, with appreciation coming in from both the audience and the film fraternity.

Madaari tells the tale of a man in anguish, who seeks justice after losing almost everything in a disaster. It’s the fight of a common man against the corrupt system, that continues to plague the society at large. Although at first thought, one can’t help but mark the uncanny resemblances between A Wednesday and the sequences that unfold in Madaari, the latter shines out in it’s own way. The film attempts to give a much needed jolt to the citizens, forcing them to wake up and save the country from drowning in corruption, before it is too late. But at the core, Madaari is also a poignant father - son story, with some wonderful emotional moments that are bound to leave you teary eyed.

In case you are one of those who still haven’t seen the film, we give you reasons to do so this week:

Ensemble cast: Kamat is a pro at getting together the perfect cast in almost all his films. In Madaari, we are treated to some fine performances by Jimmy Shergill and Tushar Dalvi, among others. The minister’s son too performs very well.

The Plot: Most of us have taken to Twitter or discussed the way we have suffered setbacks due to the negligence of those in power. Madaari perfectly showcases the plight of the ‘aam aadmi’ and his constant struggle to avoid getting exploited by the corrupt. There are instances where you might go, “Hey! This has happened to me,” and then, go on to realise that it is no one else but ourselves to be blamed for the mess that we see around us. The story of this film is raw, real and relatable.

Cinematography: If we had to pick any one major technical highlight of the film, it has to be Avinash Arun’s cinematography. He makes even the most simple background look beautiful, while ensuring that we don’t lose focus from the characters on screen.

Irrfan Khan’s performance: Reserved the best for the last. Has Irrfan ever disappointed us? The actor, who continues to make India proud as a global artist, delivers a power packed performance. An act so flawless and natural, that it almost looks he isn’t acting at all! He puts his heart and soul to essay Nirmal Kumar and showcases a variety of different shades through his character, all in the same film. Safe to say that he is the driving force of Madaari, and the one who makes your trip to cinema hall to watch this film totally worth it!

Verdict: Madaari is beautifully inspiring, and deserves a watch, especially for the brilliance that is Irrfan Khan!

The Body Shop Drops of Light Serum | Review

The market is filled with skin care products that promise skin brightening. While we prefer running away from any product that unnecessarily promotes 'fairness' and forces people to dream of changing their complexion overnight (can't we just be happy with what we've got?), we are fans of products that hydrate and nourish. Stuff that can take care of our skin from within, and prevent it from further damage. The Body Shop's latest offering - Drops of Light, is just that! We were recently introduced to the Pure and Healthy serum from this range. After trying out the product for a month, here's what we think about it!

What? - The Body Shop Drops of Light Serum

Quantity - 30ml

Price - 2450 INR

What does it promise?A very lightweight serum that absorbs quickly into the skin, leaving it velvety soft and shine free. Clinically proven to reduce the number and intensity of dark spots.

How to use?Apply 2 to 3 drops onto the face and neck and gently massage into skin every morning and evening before applying a cream

Main Ingredients - Brightening red algae extract and Vitamin C derivative

Packaging - The serum comes in a beautiful 30ml glass bottle, similar to their Oils of Life Intensely Revitalising Facial Oil. This too comes with a tightly fitted cap, that has a dropper to dispense the product. Only difference here is the colour. The Drops of Life serum is housed in an elegant all white bottle. It is easy to carry and does not spill. Since it is a glass bottle, you need to take good care while traveling.

Fragrance - Light and refreshing. The fragrance is not very strong, but is good enough to lift your spirits and keep you feeling fresh.

Texture: Extremely soft and smooth. The serum is not too thick or runny. It perfectly absorbs into your skin and feel super light weight. The moment you massage the serum on your face, you can feel the velvety soft texture of the product. Zero greasiness, so those with oily skin need not fret. The serum provides good hydration for people with dry skin. The soft texture does not irritate, and is good for those with sensitive skin.

Experience: The Body Shop Drops of Light is a great light-weight serum, that can be worn under a moisturiser as well as make up, without making you worry about any heavy residue. We tried using it every morning and night, after cleansing, and followed it up with a hydrating moisturiser. The weather hasn't been too kind, especially on our skin and hair. Thankfully, this serum did a good job of hydrating our facial skin well. Post application, it leaves the skin feeling velvety smooth. We also tried using it without a moisturiser and still, the results were great. For a shoot, the product was tried on before make up and it helped add a dewy glow, which looked lovely. Even otherwise, the product does do a good job at maintaining your natural complexion well and adds a subtle glow which looks great. While it also promises to reduce dark spots, we think we should give the product some more time to work its wonders in that department. Like we always believe, Rome wasn't built in a day. So, how can we force any product to deliver results (on damages done over time) in just a month? Overall, we are quite happy with our experience and the serum has definitely made its way into our list of favourite skin care products of 2016 (so far).

Pros:
Perfect texture
Pretty packaging
Affordable for the price, quantity, quality and shelf life
Does not irritate the skin
Great to wear under make up
Tight fitted cap with dropper, which is convenient and hygienic

Cons:
Glass bottle needs to be handled with care

Verdict: The Body Shop has certainly scored high with their latest offering. If you have been looking for a serum that is soft, light, absorbs well and does not burn a hole in your pocket, go buy the Drops of Light serum and you won't be disappointed.

Decoding the world of Mohenjo Daro | Ashutosh Gowariker - Exclusive Interview

Ashutosh Gowariker is undoubtedly one of India's most celebrated directors. The maverick film maker is best known for films that celebrate the nation's rich history with grandeur and interesting narratives. In a career that spans across two decades, the actor - director and producer has won accolades, awards and global praise for his films. After a hiatus of six years, with an exception of his telly series debut - Everest, Gowariker is back with yet another gem, featuring Hrithik Roshan and newbie Pooja Hegde in the lead. The film, titled Mohenjo Daro, is based on the life and times of the people living in the Indus Valley Civilisation - an era that we've all been introduced to through books, but have never experienced on the big screen. As the film gets ready for a grand release this Friday, we met the director for an insightful chat at his beautiful office in suburban Mumbai. Excerpts from the conversation:

Why were you keen on exploring the era of Mohenjodaro through your film?
Mohenjodaro is our first civilisation. While scripting the film, I was looking at it as a civilisation set 4000 years ago. Recent developments suggest that the civilisation was set 8000 years ago. So, it truly was one of the very first civilisations. We need to take great pride in that fact and make ourselves aware about what this civilisation was all about, who were the people and what times were they living in. We need to go beyond the little paragraphs in our school textbooks and artefacts stare at us in the museum. My aim was to give it a visual splendour and allow the India of today to get a taste of what it was like to live in the Mohenjodaro era.

How do you aim to form a connect between the youth of today, and the Mohenjodaro era?
We have all been in awe of films based on Roman or Greek civilisation, filled with grandeur and larger than life sets, but we never gave importance to a civilisation that was set in our very own country. The film does have relevance to today’s times, which I have tried to imbibe in the script. There is a sense of connect, which I hope the audience will have.

What is it about the Indus valley civilisation that attracted you the most?
The very fact that this is about a world that we all don’t know much about is what attracted me most to it. It’s pre-history, an era that has nothing written about. The period comes between stone age & iron age. Somewhere, you can compare that to the period between Nokia and iPhone, which had a Blackberry in between. The tools, implements, their concepts and it’s evolution was still in a very transient stage. I found that very exciting. It was a world where inventions happened. It’s a world where people are still trading with precious stones, like a Lajward (Lapis lazuli). It’s a completely different business module, which was fascinating. So, for me even getting into this era, by the way of this script, was to discover all these aspects.

What were your references for the costumes and looks of the characters in Mohenjo Daro?
All our references for the character looks were the figurines found from Mohenjodaro, Harappa and across all the excavations, even the ones in India like Kali Bangan, Rakhigarhi among others. With the help of archaeologists and the figurines, we imagined each aspect, right from the headdress to the clothes, and then built it from there. Precious stones were mostly worn as jewellery, by both men and women. We stuck to dhoti for men, as it is one of the oldest styles, though the draping style was changed. So, we tried to built things by not just depending on the figurines or our imagination, but also took inspiration from the oldest records that we had. Sites like the Ajanta - Ellora caves and even several frescoes were studied.

What was your research for creating the sets like?
For the sets, we first started off by working with the archeologists. Each one of them specialised in different faculties, ranging from urban city planning, to pottery among others. We did a lot of research with them. Since these were facts, we had to ensure things looked  exactly the same size. The Great Bath that we see in the song Tu Hai, is exactly the same size as it was in Mohenjo Daro. So, we tried to stay true to all the facts that we had in front of us and did justice to it.

Almost all your films have explored Indian history or have had the essence of India as it's core. Does that come from the fact that you take a lot of pride in being an Indian, and take a lot of inspiration from it's rich past?
Of course, I do take a lot pride in our rich history. There are so many eras, dynasties and parts of the country. They all have a tale to tell. So much, that I don’t know how they can all be told on the big screen. There are so many monuments; palaces and forts that are left behind, which you can look at with splendour. Most of us are only familiar with the Mughal era or the British Raj, because of the history we are taught or what the monuments that we see. But, if you travel to the interiors of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa or many other states, you will realise that there is so much more. The Gajapathies, Krishnadevraya; empires that were so massive and existed at a time. But then, they are just confined to a few pages in the history books. We haven’t got a cinematic rendition of it. So, if I get enamoured by a particular period and tell that story well, I feel good. Ultimately, no matter how good your sets are and how well you create the costumes, it all boils down to a good story to make a film work. The former are all embellishments, but what matters is the story and how well it is weaved along with the characters.

As a director, which project would you consider as the most challenging one?
Without a doubt, Mohenjodaro has been the most challenging film of my career as a director. In the case of Mohenjodaro, I am trying to show how the system started. If you look at  Lagaan, Jodhaa Akbar or for that matter, any other film of mind, you will realise that there are books, research materials available for reference. Be it the British Raj or the Mughal era, you know there is something that you can lean on, and then imagine the rest. Here, 90% of the work involved creating a world with your own imagination, and 10% was available through research, archaeological facts, excavations among others. So, it was humongous. You know, the manners and morals of the society, costumes, structure of the houses among others.

Any concept that you were keen to explore?
Buddha was something that I wanted explore right after Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey. We had started work on it, but the project had to be aborted due to some reasons. That’s when I started Everest and then moved on scripting Mohenjodaro. I haven't thought about Buddha again. The inspiration to get back to the idea needs come naturally to me.

Creating a different world takes a lot out of the director. Now that the film is complete and ready for release this week, what are your future plans?
I definitely need a break before I start working on my next project. It takes time to create a whole new world, and you need the same amount of time to go away from it. You need to get back to a state where the hard drive is completely empty (laughs) and one needs to reboot, before starting something fresh. I have been reading a lot of stuff and toying with some ideas, but haven’t zeroed in on anything particular for my next project.

The biggest challenge about acting is patience - Brett Lee | Exclusive Interview

$

Most of us have grown up watching him rule the Australian cricket team in the 90s and early millennium. We cheered for him, as he took wickets for Kings XI Punjab (and later, Kolkata Knight Riders) and took the world by storm with his famed wicket celebration style. Later, we saw him juggle multiple roles, right from being a commentator to a post-match show host. As part of the band - Six & Out, he is also known for being a pro at acoustic and bass guitar. This year, former Australian international cricket star Brett Lee, is all set to start a new innings - that of an actor. The Indo-Australian film titled UnIndian, helmed by Anupam Sharma, shall mark Binga's debut in the world of cinema. Lee will be seen essaying the role of an English language teacher named Will, who falls in love with an Indian single mum (played by Tannishtha Chatterjee). We caught up with the dashing sports star on super hectic day and the excited cricketer turned actor, who was in the city for a quick round of promotional activities, spoke to us about UnIndian, turning actor, his view on the changing face of cricket and why he loves Virat Kohli. Excerpts from a fun conversation:

How was it working with the cast and crew of UnIndian, which marks your debut as an actor?
It was an absolute pleasure working with the cast and crew of the film. The most amazing part is the fact that they are so gifted and talented. They are very good at everything that they do. If you use the cricket analogy, we were all on the same pitch and worked together as team mates. Our common goal was to ensure that we make a great film. The film is purely shot in Australia and a lot of people in the country have appreciated the film. The reports and responses have been great so far. I really hope the Indian audience appreciates the film and our efforts.

You made a short trip to India for promotions. What was that experience like?
I was quite excited and thrilled about launching the film in India. It releases this week and I am looking forward to the response that UnIndian gets in this country. It’s been a lot of fun with several engagements being organised, right from interacting with children to adults and of course, sections of the media. It’s been encouraging, especially the response that we’ve been getting on social media.

How did you prepare yourself for this film, considering this was your debut?
I did a couple of acting courses, before the film started off. My experience in front of the camera helped (as a host for post match shows) and I tried to use it in the best way. I have always believed that my experience of 28-years, both on and off the field, made the transition more easier, since there were cameras around, all the time.

Did you face any stumbling block while working on this film?
Not really. But, I got to learn that the biggest challenge about acting is patience. It’s a bit like playing cards on the cruise. You really gotta be patient and use your time to understand that things do take time. So, that’s probably the hardest thing and I am glad I learned it on the job.

I liked the message that this film carries. It showcases the fact that love has no boundaries. You can’t help who you fall in love with
(L TO R) Anupam Sharma, Brett Lee and Tannishtha Chatterjee on the sets of UnIndian

What was it about the script of this film that attracted you the most?
I liked the message that this film carries. It showcases the fact that love has no boundaries. You can’t help who you fall in love with, no matter what hair, skin or eye colour. I reckon that myself and my character Will is very similar to how I am in real life. That’s probably one reason why essaying Will’s character got a lot more easier. I strongly believe in the same values and share the same views. I think it’s a beautiful message to spread, at a time when there is a lot of unrest and trouble going on in the world right now. I think it’s nice to watch a film which takes you away from everything happening in the world outside. For 106 minutes, it helps you disconnect and enjoy something to the core.

You made your test debut against India. What do you have to say about your experience of playing against the country?
I have always enjoyed playing against them. It was unarguably one of my favourite countries to play against. We were always up against the best, whether it is Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Dravid or Ganguly (to mention a few). It was hard to play against India, but it was this very challenge that I loved the most.

What's your take on the changing face of cricket today, especially with the introduction of shorter formats?
I think the game is changing for better. Of course, all of us want to make sure that test cricket is still looked after. I like the purity of test cricket. You need to be in love with game to follow five days of cricket. It’s called test cricket because it is like a test of character, commitment, courage and who you wanna be in that moment. But for me, T20 cricket has changed the game completely and that too, for the better. So with all the new premiere leagues and cricket matches, the future definitely seems good, especially for the youngsters.

Who's your favourite cricketer from the current lot?
I absolutely love Virat Kohli. What is it not to love about him? He is such a fantastic, gifted athlete. The kind of passion and controlled aggression that he possesses is unbelievable. It’s a lot like the way Australian cricket team plays, where they’ve got the controller aggression in place. I think Kohli has definitely got that and it is always a pleasure watching him play.

I will definitely look forward to working on more films. I am game to take up a Bollywood project, if at all it comes my way.

Several young cricketers from across the globe look up to you. What would be your special advice for them, especially those who focus on fast bowling?
If you are a fast bowler, enjoy being one! Embrace it and ensure that you work hard. I think it’s extremely important to ensure that you get the right training. Too many bowlers are lifting heavy weights. You need to check out trainers who can help out with high intensity cardio, low weights and the right training routine. I have always worked out at the F45 gyms. They are an Australian franchise and have come down to India as well. I think they have the perfect training for fast bowlers.

We can't let you go without asking this - will we see you in an out and out Bollywood masala entertainer anytime soon?
Bollywood is extremely colourful. I do understand that there is a lot of dancing involved in Bollywood. With a lot going on, it just makes these films extremely exciting to watch. Right now, I am looking forward to seeing the response to UnIndian, especially their reaction to me as an actor and my character, Will. Post that, I will definitely look forward to working on more films. I am game to take up a Bollywood project, if at all it comes my way. And yes, I’ll be ready for the challenge of speaking in Hindi as well as shaking a leg on Bollywood numbers (laughs).
