The marathon season has officially begun, and the season of resolutions for the year ahead is also just around the corner. Several people take up to hard core training and fitness routines around this time, mostly as a resolution for the brand new year (and to add everyday exercise to our daily routine) or simply, to look our best for the most coveted NYE party in town. However, for many others, fitness means serious business and is an important part of their lifestyle. Constant work pressure and stress takes a toll on us, and taking out some time for a walk, run or even Yoga can do wonders to take us away from the monotonous routine. In addition, it also keeps us fit, flexible and energetic.

Interestingly,  Celebrity Nutritionist Luke Coutinho also believes the same. Coutinho, who is also an Exercise Physiologist and celebrated author of ‘The Great Indian Diet’ (with actress Shilpa Shetty), believes in lifestyle change and helps coach people to make ‘shifts’ in their respective lifestyles, in order to achieve their health goals. Coutinho is the founder and director of Pure Nutrition, well known for their wide range of organic health products. He is also the head nutritionist, master coach and mastermind behind the popular GOQii lifestyle and health coaching model. Coutinho enjoys a strong clientele across the globe and works towards a simple vision - “To empower people with skills and knowledge to live longer, healthier, and happier lives, through methods of consulting, mentoring, counselling and professional advice,” he says.

Since many of you asked us to share fitness tips for the ongoing season, we got Coutinho to discuss fitness at large in this feature. Right from tips for a marathon or gym beginner to eating right, workout do’s and don’ts and fitness trackers; we’ve got your covered on everything in this exclusive chat with the master coach and nutritionist.

Basic tips that a beginner should keep in mind before hitting the gym
Luke: Make sure you set your goals and duration to achieve them
Start some light walk or exercise before joining any gym, in order to see if you are and can be regular
Optimise location, so you aren’t bored to hit the gym
Make targets on daily basis to achieve the goals

Workout do’s and don’ts for the winter season
Luke:  Do’sDrink plenty of fluids
Protect your hands and feet, as while exercising, blood supply is to the core and in winter, extremities might freeze out. So, please take care. Wear socks and hand gloves

Don’tsDon’t over exert yourself.
Don’t skip your meals during winters

How much does a fitness tracker benefit an individual, especially to track their progress, whether in the gym or while running / walking?
Luke: Fitness tracker proves to be beneficial in terms of keeping you motivated if you have set goals for yourself
Build up correct goals that you can achieve as per your previous records
Shows realistic picture of your current health and fitness status
Also helps to understand if you had sound sleep as that is also one of the major part towards health and fitness

Five everyday exercises that are a must and perfect for every individual, irrespective of age or gender
Luke: The utmost important exercises to be done daily by any age group are:
Pranayama, Stretching exercises, Walking, Yoga, Side kick

Five important tips for a beginner, who is looking to prepare for a marathon
Luke: If you are interested in taking part at any marathon, it is important to take care of the following things -
Eating meals on time with small gaps
Focusing on a balance in between carbs and proteins with fibre
Hydrating body is most important of all
Keep natural sugars like jaggery, dates, figs etc handy to munch on, especially when you feel low on energy

The best pre-workout food / snack?
Luke: The best pre workout food needs to be a good combination of carbs with protein, as they help you in maintaining good energy levels while working out. For eg: 1 whole wheat bread peanut butter sandwich or / 1 Fruit with handful of nuts or /1 bowl of curd with fruits (yogurt parfait) among others.

Your thoughts on dietary supplements. How do they benefit an individual?
Luke: Dietary supplements are not mandatory for all. They are best suited for people who are malnourished, have deficiency, suffering from digestive problems that hamper nutrient absorption, some medical conditions that need extra nutrition among others. These supplement help nourish them by supplementing those extra micronutrients that are needed to lead a healthy life.

Diet plays a crucial role in staying fit. What is your thought on people who only concentrate on pumping the iron at gyms, but staying away from nutritious food?
Luke: Together, both Diet and physical activity play an important role in staying fit. Diet plays 80% role in maintaining healthy and fit lifestyle. Just pumping out will not give any good results. Instead, it will affect the body more negatively, making it vulnerable to catching infections by weakening the immune system, digestive system and more over, loss of muscles that can lead to other related diseases and may end up giving you a distorted body shape.

An important workout tip that you always swear by
Luke: Daily aiming to do 8,000 – 10,000 steps a day is most important for everyone. It is better than 1 hour of continuous workout.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story | Film Review

$
0
0
Destruction, survival, change and a ray hope; the latest addition to Lucas Films' popular Star Wars franchise - Rogue One, is all this (and more), rolled in to an exciting, action packed 134 mins fare. Technically, it is a forerunner to the very first film, directed by George Lucas, almost 40 years back. Helmed by film maker George Edwards, Rogue One is the first standalone film (part of an anthology) from the Star Wars saga and is set several light years before the premises of Star Wars IV - A New Hope (1977). Here, the fearless Alliance rebels fight it out against the Empire, amidst heavy action, aggression, ruination, exterminations and a raging war.

The story follows a group of unlikely heroes, mainly led by Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), who
come together on a mission to destroy the Death Star. It is the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction, that has the power to cause massive destruction and annihilate an entire planet with just one proliferated blast. Jyn is sought after by the Rebels as she is the daughter of a brilliant scientist - Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), who was the architect of this destructive weapon. One incident leads to another and Jyn realises that the Death Star has a flaw, that can be used against it; thus giving hope to the rebels.

In this mission to destroy the Death Star and fight against the evil Empire director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn), Jyn is joined by - Rebel captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), who is on a mission of his own, but changes path midway. Pilot Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), who is an Imperial defect. A blind samurai Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) with an incredible sixth sense. Ferce rebel Baze Malbus (Jiang Wien) and one of our favourites, the droid helper K-2S0 (voiced by Alan Tudyk), who brings in a few laughs with his wit and sarcasm. It is interesting to note that the main cast includes actors of different colours, something that displays great diversity.

During their journey across multiple locations, you will also come across several other important characters, including that of Saw Garrera (Forest Whitetaker) in Jeddah, who raises Jyn in the absence of her father. Be prepared for surprises in the form of references to other Star Wars chapters and cameos by some important characters from the saga. And yes, it includes a 'whistle worthy' moment by Darth Vader (James Earl Jones).

One of the key highlights of this film has got the to be the cast. Yen's blind warrior monk Chirrut and Tudyk's sarcastic droid steal the show with their effortless performances. Jones as the rebellious Jyn is incredible, while Luna's earnest portrayal of Cassian is also worth a mention. It is commendable how the entire cast puts together a flawless act and ace their respective characters, leaving no room for mistakes. The impressive story penned by John Knoll and Gary Whitta is another key highlight. Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy's screenplay is worthy of a mention. We like how all the characters have a unique personality, with a distinctive look that is crafted with great detail. While this happens to be the first Star Wars film without John Williams' score, it won't be wrong to say that Michael Giacchino has done a fairly decent job. The massive sets, VFX, hardcore action, especially when they all come together for sequences that build up to the final battle, are absolutely brilliant.

Those with zero knowledge about the Star Wars saga, don't fret. You can enjoy this film even if you don't know anything related to the franchise and / or it's world. Rogue One is an impressive film, enough to get your mind blown, especially with its fabulously crafted visuals and fine performances. The force is definitely with this one!

Verdict: We highly recommend you go out and watch this film.

Top 5 Weekend Getaway Spots near Mumbai

$

The holiday season is here, and while not everyone has the luxury to take off on a long vacation abroad (applying for leave ain’t easy, we reckon), one can certainly plan a break in and around the city. A weekend getaway serves as the best way to unwind and needs no Jet Airways ticket to take you away from the humdrum of the city. All you need is a vehicle (or a bus / train ticket), some great company (or you can also take off alone) and some enthusiasm to explore new destinations. For those living in Mumbai who have had enough of Lonavala and Khandala trips, this one’s for you. A list of the top 5 weekend getaways (less than 150kms distance) near Mumbai, that should definitely top your  'must visit’ list this season.

Elephanta Caves

Distance: Approximately One hour (by ferry from Gateway of India)

Ferry timings: 9 am to 2 pm (departure), 12 pm to 5:30 pm (return) There is a ferry every 30 minutes for both departure and return
Best time to visit: November to March

Situated around 10kms away from Mumbai, the Elephanta Caves (Island of Gharapuri) is a UNESCO world heritage site, known for it’s sculptures and caves that date back to approximately 5th - 8th century. This place is perfect for history and art lovers, who can spend the day exploring the ancient caves, rock cut sculptures, temples among others. Ensure you wear comfortable clothing, as the site is full of steep climbs and long walks. A trip to Elephanta also happens to be one of the most inexpensive one day trips and won’t burn a hole in your pocket! Ensure you catch an early ferry to explore and get the most of out of this trip. Entry fee to the site is around Rs 30 per head, while the ferry won’t cost you more than Rs 150.
Rajmachi Fort

Distance: Approximately 99 kms (upto Udhewadi village)

Travel Options: By road - Private car, Buses /
By train - Get down at Lonavala station and then, take a bus / cab to Udhewadi, which is approximately 20 kms away
Best time to visit: June to September / November to February

A favourite with trekkers and lovers of historical sites, the Rajmachi fort is situated a little away from Lonavala. Rajmachi is well known for being the strategic fort that controlled Borghat - a popular and historical trade route during the Maratha rule. It consists of two forts - Shrivardhan and Manaranjan. To reach Rajmachi, you can either choose to take the 16km trek route from Lonavala or hire a car and drive all the way up to the base village (which has some scrumptious food). There is also an off-road biking route. From the base village, you have to walk for 5-7 kms in order to reach a point, from where two routes lead to Shrivardhan and Manaranjan respectively, with Shrivardhan being the highest point. Despite the long trek, once you reach the Rajmachi fort point, the view is breathtakingly beautiful. The entire trek will take one full day, and you have to ensure that you start pretty early.

Raigad Fort

Distance: Approximately 120 - 150 kms

Travel Options: By road - Private car / bus via Mumbai - Goa highway (NH 66)
By train - As Raigad does not have a station, the nearest ones are Veer (40kms) and Mangaon (50kms). Cabs for Raigad base are available outside these stations.
Best time to visit: November to March

If the trek or travel to Rajmachi sounds a bit difficult, perhaps you can try an easier trek to the queen fortress of the Sahyadri range. The capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s reign - Raigad Killa (fort) is situated near Mahad in the Raigad district and is accessible by both road and rail. The fort is approximately 2700 ft above sea level and offers a spectacular view of the Sahyadris. For those like me, who have a special connect to the Maratha history, it can’t get better than this. Explore the Chit and Jit darwaja, Hirkani Buruj, Waghya Samadhi among others. To find peace and a moment of calm, walk ahead and pay your respects to the great Maratha ruler at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Samadhi. This place is sure to give you goosebumps. Next, you can explore the Throne of Shivaji Maharaj, Raj Bhavan, ancient market place or visit the Jagdishwar temple. To read Raigad fort, you can choose your travel option and reach Pachad village (near Mahad). From this base village, you can opt from either trekking all the way up (1500 approx steps) or choose the ropeway (ticketed), which will take you to the fort in less than 5 minutes. Don’t forget to enjoy delicious local food at the top of the fort.

Igatpuri

Distance: Approximately 100 kms

Travel Options: By road - Private car / bus via Mumbai - Nashik expressway
By train - Several trains stop at Igatpuri station. One can also choose choose to get down at the Kasara station (in case you are travelling by the CST - Kasara local), from where one can opt for private car / cab to reach Igatpuri, which is around 30 - 40 mins away
Best time to visit: October to February

Well known as the fog city of Maharashtra, Igatpuri is a popular weekend getaway spot for families and large groups, thanks to a variety of sight seeing destinations and lush green surroundings. The best way would be to plan a two day trip, making Igatpuri your base. Igatpuri has several popular resorts and even home stay options. For trekkers, a trip to Igatpuri is incomplete without visiting Kalsubai - the highest peak in Maharashtra. A trip to Kalsubai takes up an entire day, so you must plan your itinerary accordingly. Several buses or private jeeps are available at Igatpuri, that can take you till Bari (the base village). The trek is approximately 3 hours (one way) and once you reach the summit, it is easy to spot hills like Matang, Alang, Kutang and even the beautiful Bhandardara lake. For those who love water sports or a calm walk across serene landscapes, a trip to the Vaitarna dam is a must. For others, your itinerary must also include these well known sites in and around Igatpuri, which includes - Tringalwadi fort and lake (7kms from Igatpuri, 30 min trek from base), International Vipasanna centre, Ghatandevi (goddess of the ghats) temple, Igatpuri lakes among others.

Murud - Janjira

Distance: Approximately 150 kms

Travel Options: By road - Private car / State transport buses
By train - Get down at Nagothane and then cab / bus to Murud Janjira (50 kms)
By waterways - Mumbai to Alibaug (ferry) and then, cab / bus to Murud Janjira (50 kms)
Best time to visit: October to January

This post is incomplete without a mention of the Konkan coast. While a trip to Ratnagiri / Sindhudurg may require more than just a weekend, one can enjoy lazying around at the beach and exploring the beautiful sea fort on the Konkan coast at Murud and Janjira. The 16th century Janjira fort, that once belonged to the Siddhi dynasty, is the star attraction of Murud - Janjira and is one of the strongest and well built marine forts in India. For the beach lovers, a long walk at the quaint and serene Murud beach is a must. The local delicacies, including seafood, fruits and sweets like Barfi are a must have. Do take time out to visit the Ahmedganj Palace, well known for it’s Mughal and gothic architecture. In case you have planned a two day stay, then the virgin beaches of Kashid (20kms from Murud) should definitely be a part of your itinerary. They also have some amazing water sports and activities.

Dangal | Film Review

$
0
0
Dangal is a story of hope. It explores the aspiration, determination, dedication and consistency required to work towards your dream, in order to achieve success. The film follows the journey of  real life wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, a dreamer who hails from a small village in Haryana. A man of strong will, who trains and pushes his daughters - Geeta and Babita at every step and leaves no stone unturned to make them world class wrestlers and champions. It is a story of inspirational, strong women, who paved the way for young girls, who dreamt of making a career in wrestling. And once you watch the film, you cannot leave the cinema hall without a sense of pride - for both having such incredible heroes in our country and an industry that produces a flawless film like Dangal.

The film is a sports drama that revolves around Phogat and his dream to win a gold medal for India in wrestling. While he is unable to do so, he aspires to see his daughters do the same. Although initially, the dream is impossible to fulfil without a son, an incident pushes Phogat to believe that his girls have the potential to do well. Thus, Geeta and Babita's 'gold rush' journey begins. Since the film has a good pace, you are hooked on to the developments, right from the first frame. Dialogues are great, especially some incredible punch lines during the face-offs that will make you laugh and clap, as you watch the girls play against their opponents. It is important to note that in most films made on sports, somehow the story gets more mileage and the sport becomes complimentary. Fortunately, it is commendable how Dangal gets to the root of the sport and explains / shows everything related to wrestling in great detail. For someone with little or no knowledge, the film manages to create some serious curiosity and fascination around wrestling, with adequate information. Pritam's background score and soundtrack helps in the amplification of the emotions and mood of the film.

Aamir Khan as Mahavir Singh Phogat has once again proved why he is called a perfectionist. As the determined and disciplinary father, who will go out of his way to turn his daughters into world champions, Khan strikes a chord and delivers an outstanding performance. Right from his transformation to a flawless act; there is no stopping Khan here. Debutants Saniya Malhotra as Babita and Fatima Sana Shaikh as Geeta do a fine job and their hard work is evident on screen. You will find yourself applauding in the theatres, as you watch the two girls fighting it out, one match after another. Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar, who play the young Geeta and Babita respectively, keep you glued on with their antics in the first half. They set the mood right in the film with their stellar performances. Sakshi Tanwar who plays Phogat's wife, Daya Shobha Kaur, is exceptional and leaves a strong impression with her performance. Mukesh Chhabra's casting is spot on, as every character seems real and has equal contribution in making the film impactful and appealing. As the captain of this strong ship, Nitesh Tiwari excels and gives us a film that ends the year on a high.

Even if the climax is predictable, it is shot beautifully. You will find yourself sitting at the edge of your seats, holding your breath, watching every second of the proceedings, without even blinking or excusing yourself for a break. Films like these urge you to stand on your feet, clap and salute the country and its heroes. Everybody loves to witness or experience the sheer joy of cheering for your country’s glorious win. But, when you haven't attended or watched the real event, and a film manages to portray the exact emotion perfectly - that's powerful cinema for you! Dangal has that experience in store for you. Without a doubt, Dangal is one of the best sports films made in India till date. Take a bow, team! You deserve it.

Verdict: Aamir ki chhoriyaa ladkon se kum nahi. Highly recommended!

Best of 2016 | Top 10 Inspirational Quotes from Celebrity Interviews

$

0
We can't believe it's the last week of 2016 already. This year, we enjoyed some interesting conversations with some of the most popular, celebrated personalities of the Indian fashion, film and beauty industry. Our readers have always enjoyed these candid conversations, which are frank, to the point and fresh; devoid of gossip and the unnecessary addition of uncomfortable, personal questions. Some of these interviews, especially those with popular Bollywood male and female actors, have been widely read and appreciated. We bring you some of the best inspirational, straight from the heart quotes from the most read interviews of 2016.

I am someone who believes an actor needs to be honest about their work and give their 100 per cent while working on a film. It is that honesty and truth that shows when the film releases and eventually, reflects at the box office too. When you are honest about your work, the audience can see that very well.
Deepika Padukone

I am still struggling. But, what keeps you going is work. Looking for work, what work is gonna come tomorrow, whether I will get it or not. Also, thinking about how I can make myself capable enough to not let that work go.
Amitabh Bachchan

I am someone who is of the belief that you have to let someone go, if they are not wholeheartedly involved in a relationship. Even today, societal pressure has forced several women to continue a relationship, despite their ordeal. It is better to live by your self respect and allow someone to go. You don't need someone to complete you. I hate the double standards that the society has for women.

Priyanka Chopra

I am of the opinion that one should not compare their success to that of other people. If my film is liked by the audience and they thoroughly enjoy it, I would consider that as a huge success. It would be a victory for me if someone comes up and feels that my performance was different than what I have done in the past.
Varun Dhawan

According to some people, everything in life is terminated once you are married. It's like you gotta change the way you breathe as well, as if you have sold your soul. But, that's not the case, right? I am an actor and my husband respects me for that.
Kareena Kapoor Khan

I have seen a mix of both success and failure. So, when you have seen both sides, there is no fear. Fear creeps in when you have not seen failure, or when you don't know the dark side. I have been to the dark side and back, so there is no room for any fear.
Shahid Kapoor

It's important to know that there will always be someone out there who will be better than you. But, you should go home knowing that you had given your best. Your competition should always be with yourself. The moment you think that things are not going as per your expectations, you must pull yourself up and start working hard towards your goal.
Katrina Kaif

Individuals today are all consumed by themselves. It’s all about our career, success and earnings. It’s all about ‘ME’. So, a lot of people forget to take care of their parents. These are the people who brought you up, and you have to respect them.
John Abraham

Strong, women oriented films veer towards me and I am drawn towards them. I am trying to find my feet, realise my work and value with every passing day. Perhaps, that's why I get drawn to stories where the women are doing something similar.
Vidya Balan

I am someone who does not believe in living for tomorrow. There is no guarantee of the future and I have always believed in living for the present. I live each day like it's my last. Live the past behind, and don’t think about the future. Jo ab hain uspar mehnat karo.
Ranveer Singh

Best of 2016 | Top Bollywood Red Carpet Looks

$
0
0
2016 saw some of the best red carpet moments and incredible looks sported by Bollywood's leading ladies. Right from Priyanka Chopra's most Googled outfit to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's head turning vintage look at Cannes, we've got many reasons to laud our gorgeous female actors for their sartorial choices. And of course, full credit goes to their personal stylists and designers as well. Here's a round up of the best Bollywood red carpet looks from 2016. Is your favourite on the list?

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Where? Cannes 2016
Wearing - Elie Saab
The queen of hearts wowed us with her effortless glam look at the Cannes earlier this year. While her 'lilac lips' stole the show during a later outing, it was this look that won several hearts. We absolutely swear by the stunning combination of a champagne gold outfit with deep wine lips.

Anushka Sharma
Where? Lux Golden Rose Awards 2016
Wearing - Shehlaa Khan
The actress made few appearances on the red carpet this year. But, we loved how charming she looked in this Shehlaa Khan number at an award function last month. That thigh-high slit looks hot and she carried off this look quite well.

Deepika Padukone
Where? IIFA 2016 and MTV EMAs 2016
Wearing - Picture One: Anamika Khanna
Picture Two: Prabal Gurung
Picture Three: Monisha Jaising
Every time Deepika makes a red carpet appearance, we can spot fans on social media waiting with bated breath! Over time, the actress has wowed us with multiple best dressed looks and this year too, Deepika Padukone slayed it in style! Some of our favourites include the red hot look in Prabal Gurung at the IIFA press conference, the glam diva look in Anamika Khanna at the IIFA Awards and of course, the much talked about custom Monisha Jaising look at her MTV EMAs debut. We thought the latter was quite a risky, edgy look to pull off and DP did complete justice.

Jacqueline Fernandez
Where? TOIFA 2016
Wearing - Rami Kadi
Jacqueline is quite a style diva and we all swear by her 'Behind The Scene' videos on Snapchat. Among her popular looks this year, this one definitely stood out. The actress looked straight out of a princess tale, and rocked this Rami Kadi gown like with minimal make up and accessories.

Kareena Kapoor Khan
Where? Lux Golden Rose Awards 2016 and TOIFA 2016
Wearing - Picture One: Gauri and Nainika
Picture Two: Monisha Jaising
From her boss girl avatar in Ki & Ka to slaying it as the most stylish mommy to-be throughout her pregnancy, Kareena Kapoor Khan has been in the news for all the right reasons. While she kicked off the year with a svelte avatar at TOIFA, she looked her best in the second half of 2016. The then glowing mommy to-be rocked her baby bump in beautiful outfits, and one of our favourites has got to be his Gauri and Nainika number at an award function last month.

Katrina Kaif
Where? Lux Golden Rose Awards 2016 and Vogue Beauty Awards 2016
Wearing - Picture One: Ziad Nakad
Picture Two: Romona Keveza
She clearly rocked with her washboard abs in Kala Chashma, and super hot avatar in Baar Baar Dekho. Off screen too, Katrina Kaif got her A-game on and rocked some stylish looks on the red carpet. At an event earlier this year, she stunned in a Romona Keveza outfit, that complimented her hot bod. We equally loved her elegant appearance at an award function in November, where she picked an emerald green Ziad Nakad dress. She opted for a natural, minimal make up look for both the appearances, and this was pretty much her pick for almost all looks in 2016.

Priyanka Chopra
Where? Oscars 2016 and Emmys 2016
Wearing - Picture One: Zuhair Murad
Picture Two: Jason Wu
Clearly, one of 2016's best dressed moments! Our very own desi girl gone global Priyanka Chopra made everyone proud, when she was invited to present an Oscar earlier this year. She looked every inch a stunner in this much talked about Zuhair Murad outfit, which was announced as the 'most googled outfit' earlier this month. Her global domination continued, as she made a gorgeous appearance at the Emmys, looking ethereal in a red Jason Wu outfit.

Sonakshi Sinha
Where? IIFA 2016
Wearing - Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla
While Sonakshi hasn't made too many red carpet appearances, we loved some of her street style and film promotion looks (especially for Force 2). But, we particularly loved this adorable outing in Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla at an award function in Madrid, where our very own Sona looked like a new-age princess, minus the long gown.

Sonam Kapoor
Where? Cannes 2016  (Red Carpet, AmFar and Chopard party)
Wearing - All pics: Ralph and Russo
No doubt Sonam is one of the best dressed female actors of Bollywood, and she has always managed to get her A-game on to the red carpet with her impeccable choices. This year, Sonam turns several heads with her effortlessly stylish looks at Cannes. Interestingly, all our favourite looks had the actress wearing Ralph & Russo. From a stunning sari inspired gown to a princess moment with jhumkas and going vintage glam in black; Sonam killed it and proved why she will always be our favourite fashion diva!

The Best Dressed Young Bollywood Brigade of 2016

$

0
The year saw some of Bollywood's leading men make fashionable appearances at popular events. These dapper men showed off their style statement with great panache throughout the year, and we can't stop praising them for their sartorial choices. Of course, the credit also goes to their personal stylists and / or designers as well. So, here's how our favourite stylish Bollywood men ruled the fashion scene in 2016.

Ranbir Kapoor
While Ranbir rarely made any appearance in the first half of 2016, the second half was packed with promotional activities and events for his successful Diwali release - Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. We have always loved RK's personal style statement, which veers towards minimalism and is a good mix of relaxed casuals and classy formals (like he says - as the occasion demands). This year, we particularly loved his dapper formal look, where he picked a black Dior suit for an awards night. He floored us with his charm on the runway at the Lakme Fashion Week, turning showstopper for designer friend Kunal Rawal. Throughout the promotional phase for ADHM, the debonair Kapoor's charisma was unmatched, and he looked impressive in some great outfits. Perfectly suave, Ranbir!

Ranveer Singh
The king of quirk never fails to impress! Ranveer is among the very few actors in Bollywood who dares to take a risk and doesn't shy away from experimenting with his outfits. We saw him sweep away all the Best Actor awards at major functions this year. While he basked in the accolades and awards for his fabulous performance, the actor also turned several heads, thanks to his impeccable style on the red carpet. We loved his formal Tom Ford pick at an award function. But, we were blown away when he made a dashing appearance at the GQ Men of the Year awards in an androgynous DSquared2 outfit - black tux, white shirt, and samurai pants with a one-sided skirt. As the brand ambassador of Adidas Originals, we also saw him sporting some kickass sneakers and street style outfits. Only you do you, Ranveer!

Shahid Kapoor
He is known to leave us speechless with one fabulous performance after another, and has wowed us with major transformations in several films. However, Shahid Kapoor's personal style statement is fuss free and casual. A self confessed fan of athleisure, he has been one of the early promoters of this trend in Bollywood and recently, also launched his own online athleisure brand (India's first) called Skult. He never fails to bring a smile on our face with his perfect sartorial choices and we trust Shahid to put his best stylish foot forward at every event. The actor continued this trend in 2016 with some fantastic looks, including a casual all Skult look at the JIO MAMI Movie Mela event in Mumbai! But, our favourite has got to be the green carpet moment at IIFA 2016. With his smile and flawless charisma, he slayed in a classy deep royal blue tux. Effortlessly stylish, Monsieur Kapoor!

Sidharth Malhotra
The year has been a mixed bag for Sid, with one of 2016's best films - Kapoor and Sons, and an average response to Baar Baar Dekho. However, the actor was praised for his performances and of course, his stylish outings. Sidharth won several fashion and style awards this year, and deservingly so. The actor maintains that he likes to keep it casual and his personal style is understated. But hey, we  all love his choices. It's interesting how he occasionally adds a pop of colour, be it in the form of bright, bold sneakers or a tie. It was also a treat to watch him scorch up the runway as the showstopper for Kunal Rawal's military inspired collection. Slaying it, Sid!

Sushant Singh Rajput
Here comes Bollywood's man of the moment! Sushant Singh Rajput is enjoying the success of his recent film and all the acclaim that has come his way. While his impeccable performance as M.S Dhoni continues to mesmerise us, we are also impressed by his stylish appearances.  From looking sharp in an all black suit to adding a dash of polka dots and keeping it relaxed in good ol' white sneakers; Sushant is fast turning into a red carpet favourite. His runway debut as the elegant showstopper for Manish Malhotra was unforgettable, as he smiled his way on to the ramp and looked  every inch a handsome groom in a bandhgala and jodhpuri pants. Keeping it stylish, SSR!

Varun Dhawan
Although he had just one release this year, Varun Dhawan has been in the news for all the right reasons. Winning hearts for his performance in Dishoom, showing off some cray moves during the Dream Team tour, inspiring fans with his workout videos and working on projects for 2017 were just some of the things that kept him busy. Known for his sneaker love, we spotted Varun in some stylish casual outfits and footwear during the promotional leg of Dishoom. For long hours at promotions, the actor ditched luxury brands and mostly kept it simple with high street ripped denims, jackets and funky sneakers. But hey, we are fans of Varun's formal avatar as well. The lovable actor looked splendid in a bespoke Pratham & Gyanesh tuxedo at an award function. He pretty much rocked every outfit sported this year. Tera dhyan kidhar hain? Varun - the stylish hero, idhar hain!

Although she did not make any on-screen appearance in 2016 (and honestly, we missed her a lot), Deepika Padukone made sure she created waves on the red carpet. Healthy Beginnings | First Impression and Review - Pure Nutrition

Hello! Here's wishing all of you a bright, joyous and super Happy New Year. Hope you all had an amazing NYE and a brilliant weekend. Can't believe we are in the first week of a brand new year already. For us, the first working day was quite something. We revived our YouTube channel (Guess who got verified? Yaaas!) and got back to working round the clock, in order to bring out the best content for all of you. Honestly, your smile and appreciation is all that matters and 2016 wouldn't have been the way it was, had it not been for your love and support.

Now, I am sure quite sure most of you made a list of resolutions (I don't. Never did). While most resolutions differ from one list to another, there is a common goal that almost everyone tries to achieve - perfect fitness and nutrition. Come January 1 and everyone heads out to jog, run or sweat it out at the gym and tries to stay steer clear of all junk food items. But, in most cases, the motivation dies down within a month. Buck up, you guys! You gotta make fitness and good nutrition a part of your lifestyle. While setting fitness goals, make sure you also have your food / water intake and daily nutrition sorted. Last month, during a conversation with Celebrity Fitness and Nutrition Expert Luke Coutinho, I was motivated to bring about healthy changes to my everyday fitness routine and diet, which helped. That's when I was introduced to Coutinho's pet project (as a founder) - Pure Nutrition, an online natural health brand, that aims at improving the overall wellbeing of an individual. We are all for Coutinho's vision for holistic lifestyle changes and thought of giving Pure Nutrition a try. Here's our first impression and review of the website, along with some exclusive details about their popular products.

About the brand - Pure Nutrition markets organic health products, ranging from cold pressed oils, herbal teas to 100% herbal nutritional dietary supplements among others. The brand merges rich knowledge of nutritionists, food engineers and the experience of local doctors, farmers to create a variety of natural food items and supplements. These are rich in natural nutrients and help to improve overall wellbeing and even cure diseases in the long run.

Best known for: Cold pressed oils, herbal teas, super foods, natural dietary supplements

Key Elements of the Brand and Website: 100% Organic and Natural
Offers Free Shipping
COD is available
Products dispatched in 24 hours

The Website and Order Experience: The brand sells all their products on the website, which has a clean layout and easy navigation. The products are divided in four main categories - Dietary Supplements, Cold Pressed Oils, Herbal Teas and Super Foods. At the time of review (and publishing), products in the last two categories were out of stock and will be back soon. There is also a dedicated tab for health tips, which is useful. It also helps suggest products for a specific health issue. In fact, what we liked is that users are recommended that they speak to Pure Nutrition's team of doctors (from Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 6pm*) for proper advice and to get their queries or doubts solved.

The overall experience of placing an order on the Pure Nutrition website was smooth. I was quite impressed by the interesting range of healthy, natural products available. While browsing through the categories and checking health tips, I made a list and quickly placed an order. The brand offers COD as well as other standard payment options. They dispatch products in 24 hours and live up to the promise of a prompt delivery very well. Next, I am personally waiting to try the herbal teas, as soon as they are restocked.

*Closed on 2nd and 4th Saturdays

Recommended Products:

Price: Rs 1750

Products we want to try:
Camomile Deep Sleep Tea - perfect after a long day at work
Rooibos Vanilla - stronger immune system, best for insomnia, allergies

Verdict: With the world veering towards a more 'natural' future and even Pantone supporting nature with their colour of 2017, we think it is high time to turn over a new leaf. We recommend Pure Nutrition and you must definitely give some of their popular natural products a try. Our favourite pick? The Organic Raw Virgin Olive Oil.

Deepika Padukone's journey in Bollywood is nothing less than stuff that dreams are made of. But, it is also a journey of hard work, patience and perseverance. She carved her own niche and overtime, proved her mettle as an fine performer in the industry. Padukone, whose dream debut in Om Shanti Om opposite Shah Rukh Khan created huge waves, had her shares of ups and downs, before a string of blockbuster hits brought her back on the map. Today, she is one of the finest award winning performers in the country, and is steadily conquering the international shores as well. As the actress turns 31 today, we take a look at some of her unforgettable quotes from our exclusive interviews.

I started off with an amazing debut and then, a string of films didn't really do well. It was only post Cocktail that things began looking upwards. So, I never take anything for granted in my life

You need to have some sort of goal, ambition and direction to figure out where you are headed. But at the same time, you can't plan too much, because life itself is so unpredictable

Fashion for me is what I believe in. Every individual should just go out there and wear what suits your personality. There’s much more to life than just following trends

I am someone who believes an actor needs to be honest about their work and give their 100 per cent while working on a film. It is that honesty and truth that shows when the film releases and eventually, reflects at the box office too

The root cause of depression is stigma. The day we come together as a society to get over that stigma and help bring awareness about mental health issues, we will win this battle against depression

People often get carried away by trends, fads and stuff which is in style among others. Somewhere in that process, you just lose your own personality and identity

Recreating The World of Mughal-e-Azam | In conversation with Mayuri Upadhya

Manav Ratna awardee, choreographer and dancer Mayuri Upadhya is currently creating magic and breathing life into K.Asif’s timeless epic and now a musical play, Mughal-E-Azam. Helmed by acclaimed theatre and film director Feroz Abbas Khan, the play is a unanimous creation of some very talented and skilled artists, and is currently running in it’s second season with house full shows at the NCPA in Mumbai.

A trained professional dancer, Mayuri had charmed the audience with her beautiful choreography in Mirzya last year and had also conceptualised, choreographer the inauguration for Make in India week 2016. She went on to bag her first musical, Mughal-E-Azam, in the same year. Right from the first season, she has mesmerised the audience with sounds of ghungroo in the play. Mayuri went on to win hearts, and earned accolades, appreciation for her work. We caught up with the artist in between rehearsals for the ongoing second season of the play. In an exclusive chat, Mayuri Upadhyay gives us get an insight into the journey of recreating the choreography for a magnum opus - Mughal-E-Azam, on stage.

What were your first thoughts when you got the opportunity to choreograph the musical?
Initially it was ‘Wow’, then it became ‘Why?’ and then finally, the thought ended with ‘How?’ Firstly, the name of this show itself spoke a lot about the magnification of the project. Secondly, I was wondering why are they approaching me and not a Bollywood choreographer to do the job. Finally, I was thinking how will I be creating the magic in a limited time frame.

How has the journey of choreographing a grand musical like Mughal-E-Azam been?
It has been overwhelming, as this is my first musical attempt. I have just loved the journey so far. The love and appreciation for my work is inspiring. It has really been my sincere effort and I have put my best in creating every song for this musical.

What is the most challenging and unique element that you have incorporated in your choreography for this musical?
When I pick up a project, everything is versatile. Every song has a unique approach in the play. We chose Kathak as the dance form as it is the most pure form, and have given Kathak a contemporary look. The song ‘Mohe panghat pe’ has been given a whole mythological, raasleela touch through the choreography. Then there is the famous song ‘Pyaar kiya toh darna kya’, which has been given a modern feminist approach. I feel every woman is an Anarkali in her own way.  We have kept the choreography contemporary in its movement and gestures. During my discussion with Firoz sir, he was very sure wanted that he wanted to keep the look of this musical very minimalistic. He didn’t want to do anything over the top. I just incorporated his school of thought in my work. You will see there are no loud props or flashy jewellery. It is the unique approach and imagination that keeps its freshness intact.

Which role do you enjoy the most, Dancer or Choreographer?
Of course, that of a Choreographer! As a Dancer, you have limitations with your body. But, when you are a choreographer, sky is the limit.

xXx The Return of Xander Cage | Film Review

$
0
0
Think xXx and you expect high octane, fast paced action and thrills. Well, this one was has got all that and more, with Vin Diesel as Xander Cage doing his thing with an easygoing vibe. But, the third instalment of this popular franchise belongs to our very own Deepika Padukone. And no, this ain't just about her smokin' hot looks.

If you haven't seen any film from the franchise, don't fret. You don't need to connect the dots here, as the film does a decent job of establishing all the characters and their past. Xander Cage (Vin Diesel), a sports enthusiast turned government operative, was left dead after an incident. However, he is back and is now recruited by the CIA, in order to recover a destructive weapon from the hands of a dexterous gang. Xander Cage gets his best folks together to form a team and fight against this skilled gang. However, the gang has it's own secrets, and the road ahead is full of deceit, traps and conspiracies. Will this be a successful mission for Xander Cage? You gotta watch the film to find out. The plot is quite predictable, but the film has got some high points that stand out.

It's easy to get into the groove of this mad roller coaster right from the start (and we have also got Neymar Jr to thank for an incredible opening). Needless to say, you can expect extreme, high voltage action sequences that are performed across air, water and land. The incredible stunts, chase sequences are sure to give the audience an adrenaline rush. BG music is great. Robert Lydecker and Brian Tyler's score perfectly compliments the action packed visuals. One of the highlights of this film has got to be the casting. Each cast member delivers an honest performance, and gets into the shoes of their respective character quite well. Rest of the cast, including Rory McCann and Toni Collette, are good.

Donnie Yen as Xiang heads the notorious skilled gang and delivers an exceptional performance. We have seen his impeccable use of martial arts in Rogue One and once again, he raises the bar with his act in xXx, which is worthy of a special mention. Ruby Rose as the no-nonsense, badass Adele Wolff is superb. Kris Wu as the cool Harvards Zhou and Tony Jaa as Talon both perform well. Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries fame) as Becky Clearidge is adorable. She brings up a few memorable, humorous moments in the film. Samuel L Jackson, who reprises his role as Gibbons, is wonderful as always.

The man himself - Vin Diesel as Xander Cage is impressive. When he is not jumping off a tower or skating across the city, Diesel's Xander Cage is a relaxed, charming and easy going fella. However, the film is incomplete without a mention of the other hero - Deepika Padukone. No, this is not one of those 'blink and miss' roles that you think it would be. Padukone plays a pivotal role and has certainly announced her arrival on the international shores with a bang. The actress casts a spell with her sensuous looks, expressive eyes and fine act, right from the first time we get a glimpse of the sharp Serena Unger on screen. Along with Ruby Rose's Adele, Padukone's Serena smashes the bad boys with her fierce kicks, punches and fires heavy artillery, like a boss. But, what we particularly liked was the fact that her performance was natural, void of any pretentiousness. There wasn't any unnecessary accent or exaggeration (something we had pointed out around the trailer launch as well). With this remarkable performance in her international debut, Padukone has proved why she is easily one of the best performers in the Indian film industry. And now, the world is her oyster.

xXx The Return of Xander Cage may not be one of the best action films we have come across. However, this one's got enough entertainment to keep you on the edge of your seat for 109 minutes. Give it a watch for the fine performances, extraordinary stunts and Deepika Padukone's marvellous international debut.

Verdict: Guns, Global Domination and Deepika Padukone! Pretty much sums it up.
Go watch for some action packed entertainment!

A Timeless Tale Retold | Mughal-e-Azam Review

$
0
0

Recreating a timeless classic can be a daunting task, especially when the film in question is K.Asif's extraordinary tale of love, Mughal-e-Azam. However, director Feroz Abbas Khan took up this challenge and the result was a breathtakingly beautiful retelling of the film. Mughal-e-Azam The Play premiered late last year at the NCPA amidst sold out shows, applause and accolades. The makers were back with a second season earlier this month, and once again, their flawless work met with the same incredible response.

Dramatic dialogues, melodious songs, extravagant sets, magnificent costumes and beautiful choreography; this is a grand broadway musical that is bound to leave you speechless. The modern day stage adaption of Mughal-e-Azam takes you back in time and wonderfully recreates the popular love saga of Salim - Anarkali. Right from the excellent casting by Mukesh Chhabra to gorgeous costumes by ace designer Manish Malhotra and Mayuri Upadhya's captivating choreography,  each element has been carefully picked and woven together to create the perfect tribute to K.Asif's legendary film. No wonder, the second season too saw sold out shows and a standing ovation from the audience after every performance.

Chhabra gets together the perfect cast, who effortlessly perform their respective characters. They act, sing and dance their way into your hearts. A special mention of Priyanka Barve as Anarkali and Nissar Khan as Akbar, whose impeccable performances left us spellbound. Barve enthralled the audience with her sweet voice, while Khan's personality and strong dialogue delivery was perfect for the role. Other cast members, including Aashima Mahajan, Sunil Kumar Paliwal among others, also perform very well. The dialogues are powerful. For those who can't get the Urdu dialogues right, there are prominent LEDs on both sides of the auditorium that display English subtitles, which was a great idea. The overall production is extravagant and majestic. We like how even the most minute details have been taken care of. A special mention of the fabulous light effects and background score. Malhotra's stunning costumes will transport you back to the Mughal era. We particularly loved the famous 'Pyaar kiya toh darna kya' costume on Anarkali.

As the curtains came to a draw and the audience began to disperse, what stayed with us were the memories. One walks out of the auditorium with a big smile, especially after watching the mesmerising 'Pyaar kiya toh darna kya' or 'Aye Mohabbat Zindabad' on stage. We are delighted to have the musical era back, and we couldn't have asked for a better recreation of Mughal-e-Azam. While the second season came to a close today, we are looking forward to the third season already. Make sure you get your tickets, before they are gone.

Play: Mughal-e-Azam
Directed by: Feroz Abbas Khan
Cast: Nissar Khan, Priyanka Barva / Neha Sargam, Aashima Mahajan, Sunil Kumar Paliwal / Dhanveer Singh and others
Language: Urdu

Verdict: Highly recommended! A must watch for it's flawless production and splendid performances.

Line Producers - Namrata Ahmed and Suparna Chakravarti of Rapid Waters

Conceptualization
Mughal-e-Azam was conceptualised by Feroz Abbas Khan. He approached us to line produce it for  NCPA and Shapoorji Pallonji in April last year. We were delighted and instantly accepted the offer. Honestly, this has been the best decision of 2016 for us. The creation process has been very challenging and rewarding at the same time.

Challenges
I think one of our biggest challenge was to do justice to the adaptation. We wanted to give our audience the same joy they felt while watching the film.

Round up of Season II
The popularity has only grown in season two, leaving people completely spellbound. We have had instances where women have come out teary eyed and feeling completely overwhelmed. It is extremely heart warming to see people react like this.

The Mughal-e-Azam effect
We would like to believe the play has definitely set the bar higher, especially when it comes to reviving cultural plays. I think its wonderful that a whole new market of entertainment is opening up.

Birthday Special | When Sidharth Malhotra Motivated Us with #SidFit

$
0

The student has grown up to quite a talented and charming performer. For someone who made his debut only four years ago and has just six releases so far, actor Sidharth Malhotra has proved his mettle as an artist by experimenting with his choice of films and characters. Be it the confused boyfriend Nikhil in Hasee toh Phasee, the bad boy turned good Guru in Ek Villain or the struggling writer Arjun in Kapoor & Sons, Malhotra has showcased some serious versatility in all of his films.

In fact, Baar Baar Dekho saw him age back and forth in a single film, and we personally think it was one of his best performances so far. He does not shy away from transformations either; the best example being Brother, where he beefed up and added 10-12 kgs to look the part of an MMA wrestler. While the actor continues to impress us with his fine performances and stylish appearances, we are particularly inspired by his fitness routine. The supremely fit actor, who turns 32 today, regularly posts workout images and videos on social media, and needless to say, #SidFit has got many of us motivated to get our fitness A-game strong. Don't believe us? Read on.

When he said - Good enough is not enough, if better is possible. We couldn't agree more!

When his dedication gave us goals and made us believe that indeed, training is what puts more in our lives

When even an ankle injury on the set didn't stop him from hitting the gym and working on his upper body

When he made a plank look SO EASY and adorable with his nephew

When despite a packed schedule, he took time out for his workout and insisted that we do that too

When he got into the callisthenics mode post shoot, like a boss!

When he made us believe that it's not just about lifting heavy iron. One needs to work on the Mind, Body and Soul

Here's wishing you a very happy birthday, Sidharth Malhotra! Lots of luck for the year ahead.
Keep slaying it.

Raees is a Very Realistic and Unique Character | In Conversation with Shah Rukh Khan (Part I)

$
0
0

There is bound to be excitement in the air when the King makes an appearance. And when he walks in for an in-depth chat, we are all ears for his candid, witty and insightful responses. Shah Rukh Khan completes 25 years in the industry this year, and almost everyone who has worked with him over the years will agree that his enthusiasm, passion for cinema and dedication towards a film maker’s vision hasn't changed a bit.  Despite a high fever and cold, the actor took time out for a long day of promotions for his upcoming crime drama - Raees, where he plays a kohl eyed baddie. As we wait under the starry sky on a breezy night at a suburban studio, Khan arrives looking his stylish best, complete with a leather jacket and pair of Adidas superstar metal toes. While the actor attended a quick phone call, we couldn't take our eyes off that dimpled smile. After a quick sip of water, Khan settled down for an interesting conversation. Here's Part I of our candid chat with the Badshah of Bollywood.

How would you describe your experience of working on Raees?
It started off as a very small film. Then, I got injured and there was a gap. Maybe, that is a good thing, because we were trying to contain a film which is half realistic and half popular. So, during that space, we got enough time to work on it. Some of the things that we worked on later have only added to the film, in a way helping us towards what we were trying to achieve. It was great fun. Rahul (Dholakia) is from a different school of film making. Also, it was our (Red Chillies Entertainment’s) first association as a production with Excel entertainment. Also, working with Mahira (Khan), Nawaz (Siddiqui), Zeeshan (Ayyub) and everyone else was great.

What was it about the script that stood out for you?
This is not a regular story, where you see a guy who grows up and becomes a don. Then there is a villain, who beats him up and the guy kills him to become a bigger don or goes to jail. Raees has an interesting journey, which is very unique. It traces the journey of my character from a seven year old kid to the time he turns 42 - 45. In fact, all the characters move along in the film together. It’s not a very typical Hindi film, where the boy meets a girl or say, a revenge drama. It’s just the story of a person who is in the midst of a world that is completely bad. He also does bad things, but somewhere along the line, we still wanted to create an aspect that shows some human quality in him. We are not justifying anything or forcing upon anyone what to like to dislike. The audience can make up their mind - whether to like or dislike him. In commercial cinema, we generally don’t do that. It is generally forced upon you ki bas Hero accha hi hain. Usne bahut sacrifices kiye hain. Because of Rahul’s presence, it is a more open ended discussion in the film, which I don’t know will work or not. But, it is more realistic. However, the popularity part of it - songs, fight, drama are all there. So, I feel the mix will be interesting.

Raees is a far cry from the kind of characters you have portrayed in the past. What was it about the character that impressed you the most?
There is a strain in this character, where you own up and take responsibility for your action. Normally, that’s a thing you associate with good people. But, Raees is a bad person in a bad world, who does bad jobs according to us. But, he does stand up for the result of his actions. He is powerful enough to get away from things, and also to reject it. However, he believes that if you have done something, you need to stand up for it. That’s the strength of his character.

The dialogues take you back to the Angry young man era. They have become quite a rage. Apart from your style, of course, what do you think attributed to the popularity?
The film is written by journalists. They have done a lot of research and so, most of the dialogues have been picked up from spoken word, on the road. ‘Baniye ka dimaag, miyaan bhai ki daring’ is a dialogue that is often spoken, not something they have invented. Similarly, battery is a word often used for people who were glasses and that’s how, ‘Battery nahi bolne ka' came up. The likability of the dialogues is because they are very spoken and normal. Having said that, many dialogues which are spoken by other actors in the film are also very nicely done. They have got a nice rhythm. Maybe because journalists have written it, they are real or perhaps, the writers are very creative (smiles).

You are sharing screen space with Nawazuddin Siddiqui for the first time. What do you have to say about his work?
Nawaz bhai is one of the finest actors from the last decade we have seen in India. Since both Nawaz and I come from a theatre background, there is some amount of likeness to us. We both know that we have done our studies. But, he is very different as an actor than I am. Both of us were very happy to come together and respect each others space. It’s like, Shah Rukh knows this, Nawaz Bhai knows that. So, let’s try and see if we can include it together in our performances. We are very important in the film together, as our respective characters span through 15 - 20 years. It’s a relationship based on hate, as one is a cop and the other is a bad guy. But hopefully, when the film comes out, you will see that it won’t be like a typical cop-thief situation. That has been possible only because Nawaz is such a well nuanced actor.

Was a fresh face always the first choice for the leading lady opposite Raees in the film?
Casting has always been the director's call. I have never participated in the casting of any of my films. But, I think we needed a new face opposite me. Because whenever I do a more realistic character, like Suri in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, you need a new girl to make me look more real (laughs). Otherwise, people always expect me to be this cool, urban guy. Same goes for Om Shanti Om, because I was playing a struggler. Farah (Khan) was very keen on casting a new girl, so that she looks like a star. Otherwise, if you take an established actress, then it just looks like - woh heroine aur Shah Rukh Khan hero. For some films, especially when it is reality based, you need a new face. So, one reason was that. I think the second part was that the role demanded someone who is very petite to look at, but is very strong in her convictions. She stands by her boyfriend / husband (as the story progresses). At one point, they were trying to look at the existing female actors, but then, Rahul (Dholakia) was very clear that most of the people who work with Shah Rukh in the film should not have shared screen space with him earlier. So then, it will be possible for the audience to see the character more, than just looking at Shah Rukh Khan. If I do a film with, say Deepika (Padukone) or Kajol, then people will just say - Yeh Shah Rukh or Deepika ki ya Shah Rukh aur Kajol ki picture hain, instead of saying, yeh toh Renu aur Ravi ki picture hain (smiles). We are such strongly presented actors in films. And, that works well for a commercial film. But, since we were trying to be more realistic in Raees, they auditioned some people and zeroed in on Mahira (Khan).

It's interesting how you have worked with several debutants in the past, who have gone on to become popular leading ladies today. Do you think Mahira too will follow suit?
Most of the actresses who have worked with me are extremely talented ladies. They haven't become stars because they debuted with me. Some of them who did not work with me in their debut films also went on to become stars (smiles). Even before working on Raees, Mahira has established herself as an actor. This is not a new world for her. She is wonderful in the film and it was nice to work with her. I think she perfectly fits in the film. And, one can only wish the best for everyone who has worked on the film, including Nawaz, Zeeshan and myself (smiles).

Fan Questions

Well, I got injured while shooting for a sequence in Fan, just before wrapping up the film. I was hospitalised and had to undergo a surgery. So, when I started Raees, I was very badly off. In fact, the sequence where I walk out of the smoke, which was a prominent part of the teaser and trailer, is where I was on crutches. But, I had to work on these shots as the set was ready and standing. It was later that we had to postpone the remaining shoot and the film.

Due to my knee injury, learning Garba was extremely difficult, Faizan. Especially all the jumping around. In fact, they wanted me to wear a kediyu for the song, but I would look very funny (laughs). I didn’t realise Garba would be that difficult. We had to use the Dandiya, and do some of those round steps (laughs). With the pathani, it was all the more difficult. But, our choreographers - Sameer and Arsh Tanna, were very good to me.

In Part II of this interview, we chat with the actor further about Raees, the process of preparing for a character, his future projects and a technical aspect of film making that is very close to his heart. Stay Tuned!

Indian Film Industry's very own Greek God is back in action. After a two year long hiatus, the actor is back on the big screen, this time with a romantic-thriller titled Kaabil. The film is two days away from release, and Roshan is excited to see the response to this love story which is close to his heart. The actor will be seen as a visually impaired voice artiste in the film, which is also his first collaboration with film maker Sanjay Gupta. In between promotions for the film, we caught up with the handsome actor for a candid chat. In this tete-a-tete, Hrithik Roshan talks about Kaabil, the year gone by, his advice for generation next artists and more.

2016 was quite a roller coaster ride for you, with controversies taking over and overshadowing your work. How do you look back at the year gone by?
It has been a memorable year. I think we all grow because of the adversities. It's like the pressure in the gym. You can't lift the weights, so you make all the more effort to lift it to build your muscles the next time. Adversities in life are like the gym for your mind. It makes you grow stronger. You evolve more and you become more aware. So, it is always good that life becomes a bit of struggle or you have stress. Your mind is searching how to overcome and go past of it all.

Will we see you doing more films now?
I want to do more work. I am doing a lot of work. It's a continuous process. I should get that kind of movies. Kaabil is one of those films which was shot in 60 days. I should find those kind of producers and directors.

Your father (Rakesh Roshan) and you make a terrific combination and bring out the best. How's it working with him again, this time as a producer?
My father is a producer who goes to any length to make me comfortable and make the best movie. When people around me are doing their best, it encourages me to work hard and do my best too.

Tell us a little bit about Kaabil.
Kaabil is an endearing, powerful story. It's one of my most favourite love story from all the love stories I have done. How a blind man overcomes all troubles in life and how he takes revenge.

What was your prep work for the character and film like?
Very difficult and different. First of all the story was so deep, that I had to find the depth in myself. I had to research and visually impaired people. There was dance and action too, which we have only seen and heard so far, but here I had to do being blind. I got to see and live that part.

Do you feel Kaabil will finally break the jinx at the box office for you?
I have given my heart and soul to the film and since I have put in so many years of hard work, it comes back to me. I have so much of myself. It comes back in some way or the other. It may not be through box office, but it does come back in some form or the other.

How was it working with Yami Gautam for the first time?
We saw a screen test and we approached a lot of actresses. It was a ten-minutes screen test and I saw six minutes. I said this is the girl.

And what about Sanjay Gupta?
It could have been an art film but he has given it a twist. He is madness when it comes to action and emotions.

What are your thoughts on the causes for Visually impaired?
I don't know what I can do in the future. But, I must say that eye donation has been on my mind since quite sometime. That was when I saw Aishwarya Rai (Bachchan) doing an ad for them.

Many say 2016 was a mixed year at the cinemas. What is your take on the Indian film industry's performance last year?
I can't analyse that. Maybe, it is a good thing that star system is diminishing a little bit. I think it will give scope for many makers to introduce more actors. We need a lot more actors who can do well, instead of having just four or five names in the industry. Hollywood has so many actors and we can't even count names. Star system is such that everyone wants them in their films. It doesn't give much scope for other actors.

What would you like to tell the new breed of actors - The Gen Next?
Actors should realise that we are not here for fun. We have to prepare and study. The Gen Next is misguided. They feel it's all about having six or eight pack abs. But, the reality is far different from this. An actor's job is to emote and you have to interpret your life.

What is your take on Hollywood?
I haven’t found a good platform. Also, no good scripts that I could sign. Though I have read a few scripts, but then I didn't like them. When makers surprise me with the roles they approach me for, I like that and it gives me more confidence.

Do you feel maturity brings realism with it?
Maturity, awareness and losing the need to please people just to add your self-worth and to stand your ground so that you don't get conscious while performing.  Sometimes to impress, you get angry, but that is not what you do. You have to learn the process of your character and that is what I look for. I follow this process consistently to get there.

After a great response to Part I of our candid conversation with King Khan, we are back! Raees is just a day away from release and needless to say, fans of the actor have ensured the advance bookings for the film gets a tremendous response. But, before you get all prepped up to catch Miyan Bhai in action, grab a cuppa and settle down to read our tete-a-tete with the Badshah. As promised, here's Part II of our special interview with Shah Rukh Khan. Excerpts:

What is your state of mind on the sets like? Do you enjoy being on the sets?
I am a very happy go lucky guy. Even if I am tired, I am always very happy on the sets. Most of the people who I work with, are a little wary of me, because many of them have grown up watching me. Like or dislike is besides the point. But, I completely understand that. So, I want the atmosphere on the sets to be very happy. I want everyone to have a good time. I really enjoy myself on the sets. I like to have fun and  crack jokes.

What was the on set atmosphere like during Raees?
While working on Raees, I would notice how everyone was somehow very serious. So, I thought because Rahul Dholakia is a very serious director, maybe he has told every actor to focus on their work. You know, because some directors are like that. Farhan (Akhtar) is very serious on the sets. He likes to be quiet. Karan (Johar) is very funny on the sets, while Adi (Aditya Chopra) is very strict. A lot of other directors have been that way, and obviously, it’s their space and I respect that. So, I thought Rahul must one of those directors who is very serious. But, after 15 - 20 days, my cameraman, who has worked with me on a lot of films, told me, “Sir, is there a problem? Are you going through some bad phase. You look like you are in a very bad mood. Is there something wrong with the film?” I said no. Since everybody is serious on the sets, so am I. I thought maybe that’s how Rahul wants it. He said, “No, no. Everybody’s saying Shah Rukh Khan is a very angry person. He is very scary. But, I tell them that no, he is very happy and always loves having fun. Maybe, it is because of the Kajal.” (laughs) So, after that, I called everyone to my room. Since we were shooting for 50 days, Riteish had made this beautiful huge room for me, which had everything including a playstation (smiles). I said, please call everyone and let them know that I am not angry with anyone or anything. But, because of this whole fierce look, complete with Kajal and that voice I used to take out, everyone got very scared. So, I had to actually stay back and party with them, hug everyone, including Zeeshan, Nawaz Bhai, Mahira, and tell them, “Listen guys, I am not like that. You can say anything you want, but I am not so serious.” So, that was very shocking. Nobody knew me, as it was a new set and I was working with all of them for the first time.

I had to get everyone on the set together and say, Listen guys, I am not like that. You can say anything you want, but I am not so serious

How do you prepare yourself for a character, especially before the film takes off?
For me, script leads the way. You have to get into a state of place. First, you have to device the world of the film you are going to be in. Like, if you are in a Bhansali film, you have to become a part of that world. So, your pitch, tone, dialogues, inaction and everything has to match. At least, that’s what I believe in. I will never go into a film and be in my own world, when the film demands that I have to be in a different world. So, Imtiaz Ali’s world is more edgy, relaxed, easy and natural. When you do a Farah Khan film it is over the top, funny. You have to do things in her zone. Similarly, Karan Johar, Adi (Chopra); everybody has a different world. So, you first understand the world of the director. That’s why, I spend about 6 - 8 months with the director. I spend time with them, chat with them in order to understand their ideas. That way, I understand ki unka world aisa hoga. The enactment has to fit into that place.

What is the mental process of approaching either a negative or positive character, before essaying it on screen?
I always tell everyone, if you are playing a really nice person - like a Rahul or Raj, the devta samaan guy, or if you are playing a character who is darinda samaan, like a Don or the one in Baazigar, the common trait is always the passion and obsession. You have to be really obsessive to be very good or extremely bad. Rest of the characters fall in the middle. So, these two character types are the two extremes. To be both a really good and a bad guy is extreme. So, as an actor, when you play a character like Raees, you have to forget everything, especially stuff like - Arey! Log bura toh nahi manenge main yeh karunga toh. What if I beat up someone, say something or behave in a certain manner, log yeh toh nahi kahenge ki yaar, dil nahi hain iska. Similarly, for a good guy, even if a small hair pin falls down from the desk, toh bahut acchai dikhani padhti hain (laughs). You have to be really nice while doing it. So, they are both unreal, because all of us are somewhere in the middle. We are not so bad or not so good. I do a lot of reading. I read a lot of books, and find characters in them. I also see a lot of people, including you and everyone else around. When I see people, I pick on things - like gestures or physicality, and then, very naturally, I bring them into my films. It’s like, you could be a part of my next film and you won’t know it (smiles).

When I see people, I pick on things - like gestures or physicality. Then, very naturally, I bring them into my films

Many believe you are a director's actor. What is your take on this statement?
I am very clear. If I am playing Jehangir Khan in a film, I learn my lines, understand the essence of those lines and then, I am very open to the idea that Gauri (Shinde - the director) will tell me how to do it. Every film maker has a vision and point of view. I have a point of view as well, but I am only the actor here. I don’t need to believe in what you (the film maker) are telling me. I just need to make you believe whatever you tell me to say. That’s what my job is. I meet a lot of actors who turn around and say - ‘Oh! I don’t believe in this.’ Honestly, it doesn't make any difference, because you are an actor. I don’t believe I could be throwing a girl off the terrace like in Baazigar, or I don’t believe I can drink myself to death like in Devdas. I don’t believe I am as good a person that I was in Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham. I don’t believe I can be Raees, nor do I want to live in the kind of house that he does. I want to make you (the audience) believe, and that is an actor’s job. I have to believe what my director believes in. Sometimes, I may not agree with their opinion and that is alright. It is just a point of view ya. So, I will do what Gauri wants me to do in Jehangir Khan, Rahul wants me to do in Raees or whatever Karan wants me to do in his film. At least, I will be different that way. Otherwise, I will be just giving my point of view in every film. So, personally, I think it is very important to be a director’s actor. Otherwise, like I said earlier, you will be working in a different world and the director will be making a different world. So, you need to attach it by listening to the director.

Fan Questions

Nahi ya, Nitin (smiles). I didn't really have to learn the language, as the character just required me to say ‘Aavjo’ and some little bits and pieces. Rahul (Dholakia) was clear that the character doesn't speak too much Gujarati, but he understands it. Sometimes, he may say 2-3 lines. But, I wanted to make it look natural. It shouldn't look like I am trying to speak Gujarati, so a few words would just flow naturally in a conversation.

Hi Devotee! That's an interesting handle. Thank you for your love (smiles). See, it's very tough to choose. Don is completely different from my character in Raees. Don was more sexy, suave, with an over exaggerated swag. He was very unreal. I remember telling Farhan how Don was like a James Bond gone rogue. He is a bad James Bond. I work characters in my mind and for me, So, Raees is nowhere close to Don. Raees is very calm, quiet yet powerful. It’s more of a desi character. Also, Don was very mean and selfish, whereas I don’t think Raees is selfish at all.

I think it is very important to be a director’s actor. Otherwise, you will be working in a different world and the director will be making a different world

Red Chillies VFX is one of the best in the business today. In fact, the Paris Images Trade Show also has a special tribute to RCVFX planned this month. What are your thoughts on the journey so far, since it has also completed a decade last year?
I think visual effects is a very interesting space. We started the Red Chillies VFX wing with Harry (Hingorani) and Keitan (Yadav). We were three boys when we started and the first film we worked on was Paheli. We had a very small unit. In fact, we didn’t even have proper machines. Now, it has been more than a decade. So, I am very proud of them. To make a film like Fan, Ra.One or Krrish and what they are doing with Aanand L Rai’s next is a very big leap forward. I am not saying this because it is my company. It is hardly my company. But, it is a difficult business. That's because a lot of people in this country, especially film makers don’t use VFX right. They think it should only be used for superhero films. It should be used to enhance the way a film looks. It looks cleaner and better. Even in a normal love story, one can use visual effects and we will try that in Imtiaz’s next, as that is our company’s film. So, I am very proud of everything that they do, and also about the fact that they are going to Paris.

What are your thoughts on the use of VFX in Indian films? Also, what are your strategies and plans for Red Chillies VFX in the future?
I think there is a huge necessity for bringing in technology and VFX into this country. I won’t say I was disturbed, but it was very strange that some people don’t even realise that Fan is a VFX film. We assume that if we are only flying or shooting, then only VFX should be used. See, those are also wonderful. I am not deriding it. But, I think the recognition, acceptance and belief in visual effects and special effects in the Indian film industry is extremely necessary for us to go international. We (Red Chillies) can do it, Prasad (The Prasad Group) can do it, and even the 4-5 other big companies who are trying it. I would implore all the film makers, directors and writers to think about this. VFX is much cheaper in India than anywhere in the world. We, as a company, and the others as well, are making VFX for some of the best films that you are seeing in the world today. And, it is high time India made them too. You know, all these brilliant films that you see, be it Sin City, X-Men; the VFX was done here. If our Indian film makers have the vision for that, it is possible here and it is much cheaper. So, I think it will be interesting in the next five years, if we can hold on to Red Chillies VFX and take them forward. I am excited to see how things pan out with Aanand L Rai's next.

I think the recognition, acceptance and belief in visual effects and special effects in the Indian film industry is extremely necessary for us to go international.
